Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Acts 10:44-48; 1 John 5:1-6; John 15:9-17 May 13, 2012 6th Sunday of Easter In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Brothers and sisters, I have good news! Out of love, Jesus chose us. We did not choose Jesus, but out of love, Jesus chose usto be his friend. It is not in our nature to choose Jesus. It is not in our nature to choose everything that comes with him, like the invitation to extend love, grace, compassion, generosity, and selflessness to others. For better or for worse, we tend to take care of ourselves firstits human naturewe are simply not inclined to choose Jesus and everything he representsso thanks be to God that Jesus chose us! In the good news of Johns gospel this morning, I hope that you hear a couple truths about Gods relationship with us. First, I hope you hear that Gods abundant love is graciously extended to us over and over and over in a variety of ways. Second, I hope you hear the freedom that comes with being chosen by Jesus. We have been chosen by Jesusto be his friend. Now, this might sound a little sappy or a little simplebut I assure you there is profound freedom in this truth. When Jesus chooses to be our friend he transforms our relationship. We were servants, but now we are friends. We were once told what to do with very little given in return. But because Jesus chooses to be our friend, we are invited to freely participate in Gods kingdom on earth. We did not choose Jesus, but Jesus chose us. Through Gods grace we are free to have a transformative friendship with Jesus, and to participate in bringing about Gods kingdom on earth. But what does it mean to live with this freedom? This past week, our church president, Martha, sent out an email. If you did not receive it, there are copies available at the back of the church. In it, she begins what will hopefully be a thoughtful and careful decision-making process about the future of this congregation. There are

several steps to the process, and we will begin together with a congregational meeting on June 3rd. In the mean time, Martha invites us to begin individually and as families with a time of personal reflection and prayer regarding the future of the congregation. The first step in being able to make thoughtful decisions about the future of the congregation might very well be the most difficult. The first step is to ask, Is this congregation sustainable? We have to ask this question. We have to ask it and we have to answer it honestly and faithfully. So please, take Marthas invitation to reflect and pray on your own, regarding the future of the church. Do so remembering the good news. It is here that the good news becomes so important, because it reminds us that we are free. Jesus chose us, so we can freely liveso we can ask difficult questions with the confidence that nothing can change Gods love for us. And it is herein our certainty that God will graciously extend His love to us over and over and over again, that we can even consider offering a response in all honesty and faithfulness that begins with, Nothis is not a sustainable congregation. This is where we are, as a congregation, brothers and sisters. These are the questions we must ask ourselves, and one another. This is not an easy place to bebut at the same time, we hear and believe the good news that God loves us. We hear and believe the good news that God chose us, and will choose us, over and over and over again. We hear and believe the good news that, through Gods gracious love for us, we are free to live in ways that lead to the in-breaking of Gods kingdom, even while facing difficult decisionsand thanks be to God for that. En el Nombre del Creador, Redentor, y Sustentador, Amen. Hermanos y hermanas, les tengo buenas nuevas! Por amor, Jess nos ha elegido. Nosotros no hemos elegido a Jess, pero por amor, Jess nos ha elegidopara ser nuestro amigo. No es parte de nuestra naturaleza elegir a Jess. No es parte de nuestra naturaleza elegir todo que viene con l.como la invitacin a extender amor, gracia, compasin, generosidad y altruismo a las dems. Por bien o por mal, tenemos la tendencia a cuidar a nuestros seres queridos propios primeroesto es nuestra naturalezano nos inclinamos a elegir Jess y todo que lo representaentonces, gracias a Dios que Jess nos ha elegido! Espero que escuchen las buenas nuevas que vienen en el evangelio de San Juan hoy, en el que hay un par de verdades sobre la relacin que tiene Dios con nosotros. Primero, espero que escuchen el amor abundante de Dios que nos ha brindado una y otra y otra y otra vez en un variedad de maneras. Segundo, espero que escuchen sobre la libertad que viene cuando hemos sido elegidos por Jess. Hemos sido elegido por Jesspara ser su amigo. Esto puede parecer un poco sencillo, pero les aseguro que hay una libertad profunda en esta verdad. Cuando Jess nos elige como nuestro amigo, se transforma nuestra relacin con l. Hemos sido siervos, pero ahora somos amigos. Se nos dijo una vez qu hacer con lo poco que recibimos para tener una recompensa. Pero, porque Jess nos ha elegido como su amigo, estamos invitados a participar con libertad en el reino de Dios aqu en la tierra. Nosotros no hemos elegido a Jess, pero Jess nos ha elegido a nosotros. A travs de la gracia de Dios, somos libres para tener una relacin con Jess que puede transformarnos y hacernos participar en hacer presente el reino de Dios aqu en la tierra. Pero qu significado tiene vivir con esta tipo de libertad? La semana pasada nuestra presidenta, Martha, envi un correo a la congregacin. Si no recibi esta carta, hay copias disponibles en la entrada al templo. En la carta de, Martha, comienza lo que se espera que sea un atencin y una cuidadosa toma de decisiones sobre el futuro de esta congregacin. Hay que seguir algunos pasos de nuestro proceso, y empezaremos con una junta de la congregacin el 3 de junio. Mientras tanto, Martha nos invit como familias e individuos, a empezar dedicando unas semanas a la reflexin y oracin personal sobre el futuro de nuestra congregacin.

El primer paso para tomar un decisin bien pensada sobre el futuro de la congregacin puede ser el ms difcil. El premier paso es preguntarnos a nosotros mismos como congregacin, Es esto congregacin sustentable? Tenemos que hacernos esta pregunta. Tenemos que hacernos esta pregunta y tenemos que ofrecer una respuesta con sinceridad y fidelidad. Entonces, podremos aceptar la invitacin de Martha y pensar y orar sobre el futuro de nuestra iglesia. Hganlo, pero recuerden las buenas nuevas. Es aqu, que las buenas nuevas son tan importantes porque nos recuerdan que somos libres. Jess nos eligi y por esto podemos vivir con libertad. En esta libertad somos libres de preguntar preguntas difciles con la certeza de que nada puede cambiar el amor que Dios tiene para nosotros. Esta aqu, en nuestra certeza de que Dios en su gracia, nos extendera su amor muchas veces, que podemos atrevernos a ofrecer una respuesta con sinceridad y fidelidad, que comience con, Nola congregacin no es sustentable Hermanos y hermanas, aqu es donde estamos, como congregacin. Estas son las preguntas que tenemos que preguntar nos a nosotros mismos. No es muy fcil, pero en lo mismo tiempo, escuchamos y creemos las buenas nuevas que Dios nos ama. Escuchamos y creemos las buenas nuevas que Dios nos eligi, y continuar eligindonos muchas veces. Escuchamos y creemos las buenas nuevas que, a travs del amor de Dios, somos libres para vivir en maneras que permiten vislumbrar el reino de Diosan cuando estamos enfrentando decisiones difcilesy gracias a Dios por esto. Amn.
