Rev. Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Is 50:4-9a; Phil 2:5-11; Mark 14:1-15:47 April 2, 2012 Palm Sunday In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Today, and for the rest of this week, we remember the final days of Jesus life and work. Today, we begin the final week of our own Lenten journey. We begin our final days of reflection on how, and where, our human story intersects with Gods story through Jesus. Holy Week helps us to focus our personal reflections in a particular way. We remember the final week of Jesus life, and the manner in which he was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. As Christians, we cant help but imagine how we are no different from Judas or Peteror the people in the crowd, or PilateFor many of us, this part of our journey is the most difficult. For many of us, its a week when we reflect on our own humanity, imperfections, and shortcomings. Its a time when we consider how weve strayed from the lives to which we know God has called us. For many of us, Holy Week is difficult. It can be so difficult that, in some ways, we might rather skip over it, and go right to Easter. But, brothers and sisters, Easter cant happen without the crucifixion. There is no crucifixion without the Last Supper. There is no Last Supper without a nameless woman offering Jesus an extravagant blessing. There is no such blessing without Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalemwhere those who believed in him cheered and sang praises. There are no people cheering and singing praises without the entirety of Jesus lifewithout his teaching, loving, healing, comforting, and transforming so many lives. There can be no Easter if we dont stop to remember all of Jesus life, particularly his last week.

As much as we might want to, we cannot skip over Holy Week. But then again, why would we want to? Its the last week of our Saviors life. Its Gods story through Jesus, and each piece reminds us about who we are as Gods people. This morning we read the entire account of Jesus last days. Its a lot to remember. Its a lot to take in. For this reason, I would like to invite all of us to read this mornings Gospel lesson againand againthroughout the coming week. Read it pieceby-piece, section-by-section. Read it. Remember it. Reflect upon it. But read all of itRead the parts where Judas hands Jesus over for a bag of money, and remember when weve done the same. Read the part where Peter denies Jesus, and remember when weve done the same. Read the part where the people cry out for Jesus to be crucified. Read the part where Pilate listens to the crowd rather than doing what he knows is right, and remember when weve done the same. Read all of itRead the part where an unnamed woman lavishly anoints Jesusher friend and saviorin a home, and remember when weve done the same. Read the part where the disciples prepare the table for their last supper with Jesus, and remember when weve welcomed a stranger in our presence. Read the part where the crowd welcomes Jesus with shouts of praise in Jerusalem, and remember when weve done the same. Brothers and sisters, I invite us to re-read the Gospel lesson from this morning in the coming week, as we reflect on our faith journeys. But read all of it, remembering that God loves us for who we are. Read it knowing that we are not perfect, and that we will fail. And read it, remembering thatthrough Gods gracewe will always seek to be part of Gods story through Jesus life, death, and resurrection.

En el nombre de el Creador, Redentor y Sustentador, Amn. Hoy, y por el resto de la semana, recordamos los das finales de la vida y obra de Jess. Hoy comenzamos la semana final de nuestro propio viaje de Cuaresma. Comenzamos nuestros ltimos das de reflexin sobre cmo y dnde nuestra historia humana se encuentra con la historia de Dios a travs de Jesucristo. La Semana Santa nos ayuda a enfocar nuestras reflexiones personales de una manera particular. Recordamos la semana final de la vida de Jess y la manera en que fue juzgado, convicto y sentenciado a muerte. Como cristianos, no podemos sino imaginarnos cmo no somos distintos a Judas o Pedroo a la gente en la muchedumbre, o PilatosPara muchos de nosotros esta parte de nuestro viaje es la ms difcil. Para mucho de nosotros, es le semana en que reflexionamos sobre nuestra propia humanidad, nuestra imperfecciones y limitaciones. Es un tiempo en que consideramos cmo nos hemos desviado de las vidas a las que sabemos Dios nos ha llamado. Para muchos de nosotros, la Semana Santa es difcil. Y puede ser tan difcil que, en algunas maneras, preferimos pasarla pro alto, e ir directamente al domingo de Pascua. Sin embargo, hermanos y hermanas, La Pascua no puede ocurrir sin la crucifixin. No hay crucifixin si la ltima Cena. No hay ltima Cena sin una mujer sin nombre ofrecindole a Jess una bendicin extravagante. No hay tal bendicin sin la entrada triunfal de Jess en Jerusalndonde aquellos que crean en l lo vitoreaban y cantaban alabanzas. No hay gente vitoreando y cantando alabanzas sin la vida completa de Jesssin su enseanza, su amor, su cuidado, curando, transformando muchas vidas. No puede haber Pascua si no nos detenemos a recordar toda la vida de Jess, en particular su ltima semana. Aunque lo quisiramos, no podemos brincarnos la Semana Santa. Pero, por supuesto Por qu habramos de querer hacerlo? Es la ltima semana de la vida de nuestro Salvador. Es la historia de Dios a travs de Jess, y cada parte nos recuerda quienes somos como pueblo de Dios. Esta maana hemos ledo toda la narracin de los ltimos das de Jess. Es mucho que recordar. Es mucho para asimilar. Por esta razn, me gustara invitar a todos que leyeran nuevamente el Evangelioy otra vezy otra vez, durante la semana siguiente. Leanla paso a paso, seccin a seccin. Pero lean todo. Lean las secciones donde Judas entrega a Jess por una bolsa de dinero, y recuerden cuando hemos hecho lo mismo. Lean la parte en que Pedro niega a Jess, y recuerden cuando hemos hecho lo mismo. Lean la parte cuando la gente demanda que Jess sea crucificado. Lean la parte en la que Pilatos responde a la muchedumbre en vez de hacer lo que l sabe es lo correcto, y recuerden cuando hemos hecho lo mismo. Lean todolean la parte donde una mujer desconocida unge con generosidad a Jesssu amigo y salvadoren una casa, y recuerden cuando hemos hecho lo mismo. Lean la parte donde sus discpulos preparan la mesa para su ltima cena con Jess, y recuerden cuando le hemos dado la bienvenida a un extrao en su presencia. Lean la parte cuando la muchedumbre le da la bienvenida a Jess a Jerusaln con exclamaciones de alabanza, y recuerden cuando hemos hecho lo mismo... Hermanos y hermanas, les invito a releer la lectura del Evangelio de esta maana durante la semana siguiente, conforme reflexionamos sobre nuestro camino de fe. Pero lanlo todo, recordando que Dios nos ama por lo que somos. Lanlo sabiendo que no somos perfectos, y que fallaremos. Y lanlo, recordando quea travs de la Gracia de Diossiempre buscaremos ser parte de la historia de Dios a travs de la vida, muerte y resurreccin de Jess. Amn.
