Rev. Luke Roske-Metcalfe Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Num 21:4-9; Eph 2:1-10; John 3:14-21 March 18, 2012 4th Sunday in Lent In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. It has been a couple weeks since I have stood up here. Last week we heard Eldaa and Andrea preach in celebration of the International Womens Day. The week before that we heard Pastor Alcantara and Pastor Brondos preach at my installation. In fact, the last time I preached was right before our second congregational meeting. Its only been a few short weeks but we have been busy! We approved our annual budget and intentionally focused on being clear about our financial situation. We expanded our voting church council members from four people to five. We committed to put a new roof on our church this May! We welcomed four different people into our pulpit. We installed one pastor. We have celebrated Womens Dayand of course as good Lutherans, we shared a meal together along the way. We have been busywe have been workingwe have been faithful. Over the past couple of weeks, instead of preparing a sermon, I have taken time to reflect on the life of this congregation. What Ive noticed is that yes, we have been busy, but much of the activity we as a congregation we are involved in, points to a congregation in transition. We are a congregation in transition and here are a few examples of why I say this. There was a need to develop new leadership within the choir, and after a thoughtful discernment process, you developed a cooperative-style of leadership. Youve recently begun a discernment process of how you as a congregation would like to engage in social ministry in the city. You spoke up about needing to care for our church buildingand responded. The council recognized a need to have one more voting voice in the decision

making process and actively sought to change itand you as a congregation responded. Even the creation and approval process of our annual budget reflected that you are a congregation in transitionin maturing...The congregation, rather than being passive recipients of a vague budget seemed to be more actively engaged in identifying the needs and priorities of the church. We are a congregation in transition and this morning Ephesians offers us a glimpse at another community in transition. In Ephesians we read about a community that are transitioning from olds ways to new. The community that this letter is written to had moved from being concerned with the ways of the world, to being concerned with how to live faithfully in the ways Jesus taught during his life. They have gone from being manipulated and falling victim to Evil, to actively responding to Gods love and grace. The community has moved from being dead in sin, to alive in Christ. Brothers and sisters, I do not think that Good Shepherd is in such an extreme transitionhoweverthis transition that you find yourself in, might just breath new life into this congregation just as it did for the Ephesians. Transitions are not easy and they can be long. Our transition has provided its fair share of bumps and bruises along the way. It will probably provide several more. Its been slow going, by my estimate for over a year now. When will we reach the end of this transition? That is anyones guessand really up to God. And that brothers and sisters, is the key to our transition and what we read in Ephesians. All of it our transition, our faithful engagement of important issues, our ability to put a new roof over our heads and create a budget all of it comes from, and through, God. Everything that is going onall of the growing painsall of the new steps taken are through Gods grace. In all of our busyness in life together, which I prayerfully hope will continue to deepen, we must remember that Gods love, comes to us not by how busy we are, but by Gods grace through Jesus our Christ. And thanks be to God for that. Amen.

En el nombre del Creador, Redentor y Sustentador, Amen. Han pasado algunas semanas desde que me par aqu. La semana pasada escuchamos predicar a Elda y a Andrea en celebracin del Da internacional de la mujer. La semana anterior a aquella, escuchamos las predicaciones de los pastores Alcntara y Brondos con motivo de mi instalacin. De hecho, la ltima vez que prediqu fue precisamente antes de nuera reunin congregacional. Han sido semanas muy cortas, pero nos hemos mantenido ocupados. Hemos aprobado nuestro presupuesto anual, e intencionalmente nos enfocamos en ser claros acerca de nuestra situacin financiera. Ampliamos nuestro consejo parroquial de cuatro a cinco miembros votantes. Nos comprometimos a colocar un nuevo techo en nuestra iglesia para este mayo. Hemos dado la bienvenida a cuatro nuevas personas en nuestro plpito. Instalamos un nuevo pastor. Hemos celebrado el Da de la Mujery, por supuesto, como buenos luteranos, hemos compartido los alimentos en el camino. Hemos estado ocupadoshemos estado trabajandohemos sido fieles. En las ltimas semanas, en vez de preparar un sermn, me he tomado tiempo para reflexionar sobre la vida de esta congregacin. Lo que he notado es que, si, hemos estado ocupados, pero mucha de de la actividad en la que nosotros como congregacin estamos involucrados, apunta a una congregacin en transicin. Somos una congregacin en transicin, y he aqu algunos ejemplos del por qu digo esto. Haba necesidad de desarrollar un nuevo liderazgo en el coro, y despus de un considerado proceso de discernimiento, desarrollamos un estilo cooperativo de liderazgo. Recientemente, ustedes han comenzado un proceso de discernimiento sobre cmo podran ustedes mismos, como congregacin, involucrarse en un ministerio social en la ciudad. Hablaron acerca de cuidar el edificio de nuestra iglesiay respondieron. El Consejo reconoci la necesidad de tener una voz votante ms en el proceso de toma de decisiones y buscaron activamente como cambiarloy como congregacin, respondieron. An la creacin y el proceso de aprobacin de nuestro presupuesto anual refleja que ustedes son una congregacin en transicinen maduracin La congregacin, en vez de ser la pasiva recipiente de una presupuesto vago, parece estar ms activamente involucrada en identificar las necesidades y prioridades de la iglesia. Somos una congregacin en transicin y esta maana la epstola a los Efesios nos ofrece un vislumbre de otra comunidad en transicin En Efesios leemos acerca de una comunidad que est en transicin entre lo viejo y lo nuevo.

La comunidad a la que se dirige esta carta se ha desplazado de estar preocupada con los asuntos del mundo, a estar interesada en cmo vivir con fidelidad en la manera en que Jess ense durante su vida. Han dejado de ser manipulados y ser vctimas del Mal, para responder activamente al amor y la gracia de Dios. La comunidad se ha movido de estar muerta en el pecado, a vivir en Cristo. Hermanos y hermanas, no creo que El Buen Pastor se encuentre en una transicin tan extrema como esta Sin embargoesta transicin en la que se encuentran ustedes, puede ser precisamente un nuevo aliento de vida para esta congregacin como lo fue para los efesios. Las transiciones no son fciles y pueden tomar mucho tiempo. Nuestra transicin ha tenido su dosis de obstculos y raspones a lo largo del camino. Probablemente habr ms. Ha sido un proceso lento, segn puedo ver, de un ao hasta ahora. Cundo llegaremos al final de la transicin? Esto es difcil de adivinarrealmente depende de Dios. Y esta es la clave, hermanos y hermanas, de nuestra transicin y de lo que leemos en Efesios. En todo esto nuestra transicin, nuestro fiel involucramiento en asuntos importantes, nuestra habilidad para poner un nuevo techo sobre nuestras cabezas y crear un presupuesto---todo esto viene de Dios y a travs de l. Todo lo que est ocurriendotodos los dolores de crecimientotodos los pasos nuevos que se estn tomando son a travs de la gracia de Dios. En medio de toda nuestra actividad viviendo juntos, que yo espero en oracin contine profundizndose, debemos recordar que el amor de Dios viene a nosotros no por ser muy activos, sino por la gracia de Dios en Jess, nuestro Cristo. Y debemos dar gracias a Dios por ello. Amn.
