Employee engagement Employee engagement is a business management concept.

An "engaged employee" is one who is fully involved in, and enthusiastic about their work, and thus will act in a way that furthers their organization's interests. According to Scarlett Surveys, "Employee Engagement is a measurable degree of an employee's positive or negative emotional attachment to their job, colleagues and organization which profoundly influences their willingness to learn and perform at work". Thus engagement is distinctively different from employee satisfaction, motivation and organizational culture. Literature review An organizations productivity is measured not in terms of employee satisfaction but in terms of employee engagement. Employees are said to been gaged when they show a positive attitude towards the organization and e x p r e s s a c o m m i t m e n t t o r e m a i n w i t h t h e o r g a n i z a t i o n . I t i s t h e l e v e l o f commitment and involvement an employee has towards the organization and its values. An engaged employee is aware of the business context and works with colleagues to improve performance within the job for the benefit of the organization. E n g a g e m e n t a t w o r k w a s c o n c e p t u a l i z e d b y K a h n ( 1 9 9 0 ) a s the harnessing of organizational members selves to their work roles. I n engagement people employ and express themselves physically, cognitively and emotionally during role performances. T h e s e c o n d r e l a t e d c o n s t r u c t t o e n g a g e m e n t in organizational behavior is the notion of flow advanced by C s i k s z e n t m i h a l y i ( 1 9 7 5 ) . H e defines Flow as the holistic sensation that people feel when they act with t o t a l i n v o l v e m e n t . F l o w i s t h e s t a t e i n w h i c h t h e r e i s l i t t l e d i s t i n c t i o n between the self and environment. When individuals are in flow state little conscious control is necessary for thei r actions. Employee engagement is thus the level of commitment and involvement an employee has towards their organization and its value. The organization must work to develop and n a t u r e e n g a g e m e n t w h i c h r e q u i r e s a t w o w a y r e l a t i o n s h i p b e t w e e n employer and employee.
