Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Jonah 3:1-5, 10; 1 Cor 7:29-31; Mark 1:14-20 January 22, 2012 3 Sunday of Epiphany In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Brothers and Sisters, I have Good News: after last weeks meeting that many of you attended, you seem to have repented, believed, and heard the Good News! More specifically, after talking together for over an hour last week about stewardship, tithing, and our critical financial situation, you all seem to have repented! And you should be proud as a congregation for doing so. Repentance is the first step in growing as a person, and as a congregation, and after last week, you should feel like you have repented. This mornings gospel lesson includes Jesus first spoken words according to Markand in literature, the first spoken words by the main character are usually very important. Jesus first words to the audience, and to us, are The time has comethe Kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news! These are important words for us to hear today, yet this translation leaves out some important insights. If we are to look at Jesus words in the Greek, we get a deeper sense of what exactly Jesus proclaims. Without going into the details of the Greek, we could read Jesus first spoken words according to Mark as, The in breaking of Gods Kingdom has arrived. Turn around and live out the good news! Turn around and live out the good news! What I find curiously appropriate for us today is the meaning of repent, that we read today because in many ways, this is exactly what we did last week. Often times when we hear the word repent, it brings up guilty feelingsfeelings of being sorryand often times the worse we feel, the more we are

said to have repented. Repent is a word that has taken on negative connotationsyet if we go to the original Greek meaning, we find a very different sentiment. The word repent literally means, to turn around. Repent is a verba word that conjures up an idea of action rather than an emotion. Rather than feeling guilty or feeling sorry, when we repent, we are called into actionto turn around. When Jesus calls his first disciples, and us, to repent and live out the good news, he is calling us into to live differentlyto live in a new way. And this brothers and sisters is why you as a congregation seem to have repented. After last weeks meeting where we discussed a $60,000 peso deficit, talked about stewardship and tithing, you we as a congregation have turned in a new direction. During the meeting we shared many thoughts and ideas of how we might live differently. Over the past week I have heard from many of you. Some have told me how much they learned during the meeting, and requested that we have these types of meetings more often. Some of you have shared ideas of how we might be able to be more careful with our financial offerings. And the Welcoming Committee has responded to this short-term financial crisis by offering to use the funds they have raised to help pay the property tax. Its amazing what happens when we have difficult conversations. Brothers and sisters repentance is the first step in growing as a person and as a congregation. I think that we have indeed turned around and decided to move in a new directionin a direction that tends towards communication, financial responsibility and openness, and accountability so that we might continue to live out the good news as a congregation. Brothers and sisters, this is an important first stepbut there are many more steps to come. We will have to continue to address our immediate financial crisis, but also continue to grow as people of faith so this doesnt happen again. We will have to challenge one another, and ourselves, to grow and deepen our understanding of stewardship and tithing. We will have to support one another and work together because this will not be easy. As we continue living out the good news in a new way, let us remember that in doing so, we turn away from our old ways, and towards celebrating the in breaking of Gods Kingdom here on earth. Amen.

En el nombre de nuestro Creador, redentor y sustentador, Amn. Hermanos y hermanas, les tengo buenas noticias: despus de la reunin de la semana pasada a la que varios de ustedes asistieron, parece que se han arrepentido, ahora creen y han escuchado la Buenas Nuevas. Ms especficamente, despus de platicar juntos por ms de una hora sobre la mayordoma, contribuciones y nuestra crtica situacin financiera, parece que todos se arrepintieron. Y deberan estar orgullosos como congregacin de haberlo hecho. El arrepentimiento es el primer paso para el crecimiento como personas y como congregacin. Y despus de una semana, deberan sentirse como personas arrepentidas. Esta maana, la lectura del evangelio incluye las primeras palabras que, segn Marcos, pronunci Jessy en literatura, las primeras palabras del personaje principal son generalmente muy importantes. Las primeras palabras de Jess para su audiencia y para nosotros son: El tiempo ha llegado...el Reino de Dios se ha acercado. Arrepintanse y crean en las Buenas Nuevas! Estas son palabras importantes para nosotros hoy en da. Y sin embargo, esta traduccin deja fuera algunas observaciones importantes. Si buscamos las palabras de Jess en griego, encontramos un sentido ms profundo de lo que Jess est exactamente proclamando. Sin entrar en detalles sobre el griego, podramos leer las primeras palabras de Jess segn Marcos como La irrupcin del Reino de Dios ha llegado. Cambien de direccin y vivan las buenas nuevas!. Cambien de direccin y vivan las buenas nuevas. Lo que me parece curiosamente apropiado para nosotros hoy, es el significado de arrepentirse, que hemos ledo, pues de muchas maneras es exactamente lo que hicimos la semana pasada. Con frecuencia, cuando escuchamos la palabra arrepentirse, hace resaltar sentimientos de culpasentimientos de penay con frecuencia cuando nos sentimos peor, nos sentimos ms arrepentidos. Arrepentirse es una palabra que ha adquirido connotaciones negativaspero si vamos al sentido griego original, encontramos un sentimiento muy diferente. La palabra arrepentirse significa literalmente cambio de direccin. Arrepentirse es un verbo, una palabra que implica la idea de accin y no de emocin. En vez de sentirnos culpables o sentirnos apenados, cuando nos arrepentimos, somos llamados a la accina cambiar de direccin. Cuando Jess llama a sus discpulos y a nosotros a arrepentirnos y a vivir las buenas nuevas, nos est llamando a vivir de una manera diferentea vivir de un modo distinto.

Y esto es, hermanas y hermanos, por qu parece que ustedes como congregacin--- se han arrepentido. Despus de la reunin de la semana pasada en la que discutimos nuestro dficit de $60,000.00 pesos, platicamos acerca de mayordoma y las ofrendas. Ustedes, como congregacin han dado la vuelta hacia una nueva direccin. Durante la reunin compartimos muchas cosas e ideas de cmo podramos vivir de una manera diferente. Durante la semana pasada he tenido noticias de de muchos de ustedes. Algunos me han dicho cuanto aprendieron en la reunin, y pidieron que tuviramos este tipo de reuniones ms frecuentemente. Otros han compartido ideas de cmo podemos ser ms diligentes con nuestras ofrendas financieras. Y el comit de bienvenida ha respondido a nuestra crisis financiera a corto plazo, ofreciendo el uso de los fondos que han obtenido para ayudar a pagar el impuesto predial. Es asombroso lo que ocurre cuando tenemos conversaciones sobre nuestras dificultades. Hermanos y hermanas, el arrepentimiento es el primer paso para el crecimiento como personas y como congregacin. En verdad creo que hemos dado la vuelta y decidido encaminarnos en una nueva direccinen una direccin que apunta hacia la comunicacin, a la apertura y responsabilidad financiera, y a asumir nuestra responsabilidad antes los dems, de manera que podamos continuar viviendo las buenas nuevas como congregacin. Hermanas y hermanos, este es un primer paso muy importantepero hay otro pasos que estn por venir. Tendremos que seguir abordando nuestra inmediata crisis financiera, pero tambin tenemos que seguir creciendo como personas de fe para que esto no ocurra nuevamente. Tendremos que retarnos los unos a los otros, y a nosotros mismos, para crecer y profundizar en nuestra comprensin de mayordoma y ofrendar. Tenemos que apoyarnos los unos a los otros y trabajar juntos, ya que esto no ser fcil. Y conforme continuamos viviendo las buenas nuevas de una manera distinta, recordemos que al hacerlo, nos alejamos de nuestras maneras gastadas, y nos movemos hacia la celebracin de la irrupcin del Reino de Dios aqu en la tierra. Amn.
