Bell rings Nerd(catches up with friends): Hey guys, wait up!

Since I was absent yesterday, could you tell me what Miss Lim taught during Science? (Takes out notebook and pen) F1(thinking): Erm We learnt aboutaboutummflooding and the monsoon season. We formed groups of three to make a scrapbook about it for our homework. Nerd(eagerly): Oh.. So what is a monsoon season? F2(proudly): It is a soon coming Monday season. F3(looking annoyed): No, it isnt! It is a rainy season which lasts for several months and has lasting climatic effects. It also refers to both the wet and dry monsoons. Nerd: So, what are the different kinds of monsoon? F2(excitedly): Oh! I know this one! They are the summer southwest monsoon, which happens during the summer and affects Asia, anderm.. the winter northeast monsoon has cool, dry winds and bring mild weather to China and India. Nerd: So, how does a monsoon occur? F1: Well, a monsoon is an enormous air mass that blows in 1 direction during the winter, making the land hot and then shifts to blow in the opposite direction during the summer, bringing heavy rains. Nerd: Does the monsoon cause any tides? F1: No, tides are generated by any disturbance that rapidly moves a large mass of water. F2: An example would be an earthquake or a volcanic eruption, but the most common cause would have to be an undersea earthquake. Nerd(looks confused): I know that tides can cause floods but what are floods? F3: A flood is an overflow of water, an expanse of water that submerges land. Nerd: What about a flash flood? F3: A flash flood occurs without warning and can be caused by sudden violent thunderstorms. Nerd: Do you know any effects of floods? F2: 1 example would be food and water that comes into contact with flood waters will be contaminated. F1: Floods can be caused by the poor drainage system in low-lying areas and not enough people clearing the litter and leaves. Nerd: So how does the drainage system work? F3: Erm..modern drainage system incorporate geo textile filters that retain and prevent fine grains of soil from passing into and clogging up the drain. F2: Geo textiles are synthetic textile fabrics specially manufactured for civil and environmental engineering applications. Nerd(curiously): Youve been saying something on low-lying areas Do you have an example? F3: Of course I do. Some are Upper Pickering Street, South Bridge Road, Fort Road, some roads in Chinatown areaumm.. thats all I know. Nerd(happily): Oh, now I know more about monsoon seasons and flooding, thanks for your help! F1,2,3(smiling): No problem, buh bye!
