Theatre Survey section 001 Martin Wootton

Implications of the Statement A Collaborative Experience Theatre is a preformed art that requires many hours of labor before it is ever ready to be preformed live in front of an audience. Theater calls for many different but equally important jobs and artisans to work together for a play to be preformed. When the play is finally ready and an audience has gathered a new collaborative experience is produced. A new relationship forms between the actor and the audience making a captivating and powerful experience. Even in its humble origins of ritualistic performances to celebrate the god Dionysus, the performances required a collaborative effort between builders, actors, and the greater community to hold the celebration. Now we give the different people how contribute to the play titles. Two main players this the theatrical experience of producing a drama is the Producer and the Director. The Producer deals with all of the money, and the public. They are in charge of money options, dealing with investors and dues owed to playwrights, they are also in charge of the budget and how much of the allocated money to each department such as set and costume designers and are also in charge of everyones paycheck money which pays the actual employees. The Director deal with the actual performers and other over all organization of the production. He deals directly with the choreographer who then deals with the dance captain and dancers. He also deals with the Music Director who relays his opinions, if anything needs to be changed or altered for the

overall effect of the play, to the rehearsal pianist, singers and other musicians. The director deals with the performers. And finally the Director works with the Stage manager and set designer who have a plethora of others to work with. For a visual representation of what the Directors and Producers responsibilities of a commercial theatre turn to pages 165 and 167 in The Theater Experience 10th Edition by Edwin Wilson. The next two jobs which absorb much of the funding necessary for the production are the Designers and Stage Manager. The Stage Manager makes sure that everything is working well and the play can flow seamlessly though each scene change or queue. He works hand in had with the designers to mold a play where all of the visual aspects can work with each other. The Master Carpenter, who works in the Scene shop and on props, Master Electrician, Sound Technician all collaborate with the Technical Director for a good overall appearance of the stage. The costume designers work in the costume shop to produce outfits for the actors. All of these people must work together to produce a play or theatrical production. The must make a collaborative effort to bring to life the transitory experience of live theatre. However, the one major component that is missing is the audience. Who are marketed to by the Board of Directors which are in charge of fund raising, Marketing, long range planning, and Public Relations. After the audience have entered and taken their seats the experience of live theatre begins. Each Audience member will discover something about themselves or something beyond each individual as they watch the story unfold. The audience will leave with a story never told in the same manner. Theatre is about the human experience and the bond created between the actors and audience made up of a common understanding and focus. Theatre is a place where time and space are just a simple part of

a selective reflection of life easily manipulated and accepted to gain a unique perspective of society. Theater is about the communication of issues, understandings, and world truths that each audience members absorbs and takes with them. Collaborative experience, where the actors give the performance and the audience gives back a emotional response, is the experience of theatre. Theatre is more than a simple production, but requires a collaboration of many people. Theater has a physical level of requirements in which the staff perform to add to the emotional and mental realism which the audience and actors must reach in order to have the full experience of theatre. Theater requires a coordination of many crafts to form the collaborative experience shared by the audience.
