Last Thursday, I was honored
along with Dr. Barry Cover to
speak at the graveside services
for Fredericka Thompson, who
passed away last week. She was
a speech and history teacher
at Port Clinton High School,
and even though I only had
12 weeks of speech my senior
year, she had a huge impact
on me and my life. She made
a huge impact on a lot of lives
at PCHS. Thanks Freddie! She
wanted no obituary, no view-
ing, only the graveside service,
but I know there are a lot of
former students out there who
would want to know of her
passing.

Church
celebrates
30-year
history
BY ANGIE ZAM

Past members, pastors and friends will
join the congregation at Firelands Presbyte-
rian Church Sunday to celebrate 30 years of
history and look to the future.
In 1980, two couples Pat and Bud True
and Betty and Sam Carter met with of-
fcials to start a Presbyterian church in the
area. The frst service was held that year in
the fellowship hall of Catawba Union Cha-
pel on Porter Road. Two years later, on May
30, 1982, the growing congregation was
chartered as Firelands Presbyterian Church
and a tradition of dedication and commu-
nity was born.
I thought there must be something really
wonderful happening here because there
was no ambiance, she said of the Union
Chapel site. It was just a room flled with
enthusiastic people and this old record play-
er.
Throughout the years, that enthusiasm has
helped the church to grow.
The congregation moved to a renovated
barn on Sloan Road in Catawba in 1982 and
four short years later completed construc-
tion on the current site, 2626 E. Harbor
Road, Port Clinton. In 1999, an expansion
was completed that doubled the size of the
church. All thanks to the hard work and
generosity of its members.

Karen Demangos, then executive direc-
tor of Joyful Connections, was recently
honored with the Larry L. Noblitt
Liberty Bell Award. The accolade was
given by the Ottawa County Bar As-
sociation for outstanding service to
the community for her work at the
supervised exchange and visita-
tion site in Oak Harbor.
It was very exciting, Demangos
said, but not just for personal rea-
sons. Im just glad for Joyful Connec-
tions to get this recognition.
Perfect timing.
May is Supervised Visitation Awareness
Month and the local organization is us-
ing this and the representative orange
ribbon to get the word out about what
they do. There is a coloring contest, the
Rally for the Kids event last weekend
in Bassetts Market parking lot and
literature being handed out around
town.
The board for Joyful Connec-
tions was formed in 2007 as a
Leadership Ottawa County class
project. Next came bylaws, 501(c)
(3) status, the hiring of an execu-
tive director and securing the site at 8200
W. Ohio 163, Oak Harbor.
There was nothing here but junk,
Demangos said.
A garage sale, cornhole
tournament, kids activities
and more were set up in the parking
lot at Bassetts Market Saturday for Rally for
the Kids. The event raises money for Joyful Connec-
tions and CASA Court-Appointed Special Advocates.

Which stands in stark contrast to three
living room-style visitation areas flled
with comfy furniture, games and toys for
all ages. Families use these spaces for su-
pervised court-ordered visitation. Accord-
ing to Juvenile and Probate Judge Kathleen
Giesler, the court uses the site primarily in
cases of abuse, neglect and dependency.
It gives a place where children can visit
with their parents where they continue to
be protected but theyve made it as close
to a home environment as possible, the
judge said. It makes families comfortable.
And since the end goal of any of these
court cases is reconciliation, Giesler said
the service is invaluable. The visits allow
the children to maintain or rebuild rela-
tionships with a non-custodial parent. In
addition, the site offers a neutral site for
custody exchanges.
Although both services are offered for a
small fee $14 for exchanges or $15 for
visitations no one will be turned away
for the inability to pay. Funding for the
site comes through grants and generos-
ity. From the carpets on the foors and the
cleaning products in the cabinets to the
computer equipment in the offce, the site
is literally flled with donations.

FIRELANDS from 1A
The land was donated by Kenneth and
Jeannette Focht in memory of Philip and
Margaret Freeman, Bill Koster offered
up matching funds for the expansion in
memory of his wife Marcia and later, a
special loft was built with the help of Doug
Focht for a Wicks Organ that had come
from someones home. The stained-glass
windows depicting the Nicene Creed were
even made by 33 church members. Brand,
along with Joan Moore and long-time Rev.
Robert Butcher, came up with the design
and helped lead the efforts.
It makes you feel like youve left a lega-
cy, Brand said.
The legacy of the church as whole ex-
tends far beyond the building.
We initiated the Mobile Meals pro-
gram in Catawba and Portage Townships,
said Butcher, pastor at the church for 24
years. We started the Wide World Shop.
We started the Vineyard on Catawba re-
tirement community. We started the Mu-
sical Arts Series at Firelands. We started
Firelands Day Care, which is currently
the highest rated day care program in the
county. We started the Firelands food pan-
try which to this day day provides food for
a dozen families every week.
In addition, the church is a site for the
Summer Lunch Program and this week-
end, will be the site for a celebration of
past, present and future.
Im excited to have people come and see
what vital congregation we are, said Rev.
Jeanne Gay, who has served at the church
since 2009.
According to Gay, the 10: 30 a.m. Sunday
service will include former pastors and
hymns written for the congregation over
the years. After that, a potluck dinner and
opportunity to share memories is planned.
What I look forward to most at the an-
niversary celebration is seeing the people
and sharing the memories of what we were
able, by the Holy Spirit, to accomplish over
those 24 years of my tenure as pastor, said
Butcher.
All are welcome to come out to the cel-

With the cold weather well behind us, the light-
house and museum have been cleaned and special
tours are now taking place.
The regular hours have been changed as there
were more people waiting for the lighthouse to
open, and not as many near closing time. The
weekday hours are: noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday after
Memorial Day through Friday before Labor Day;
4 to 6 p.m. Sunday evenings June through August;
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. the second Saturday of each
month May through October. The last tour to
climb the lighthouse is 15 minutes before closing.
Many reliable docents are returning this year,
along with a few new volunteers, but more docents
are needed. All of the displays are well-marked and
a Fast Fact Sheet is available to answer any ques-
tions that may be asked. New docents are always
placed with returning workers, so it is an enjoy-
able way to spend a few hours. Call Jan at 419-569-
0211 or Mary at 419-798-4877 to sign up.
All of the Memorial bricks that were ordered
over the winter months are now in place in the
circular walkway. There is a total of 535 inscribed
bricks laid as of today. This area is very popular
with visitors and locals to sit and enjoy the lake
and lighthouse.
A nature and nautical sale is being planned for
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 14 on the museum property.
Organizers are looking for any articles pertaining
to nature, nautical and the lighthouse. To donate
any items for this worthwhile cause, call Mary at
419-798-4877.
Tickets are on sale for a chance to win a unique,
matted and framed picture of the Marblehead
Lighthouse, handmade entirely from colored fne
silk thread. The picture was donated by John and
Carolyn Brichacek who own World Threads Gal-
lery in New Carlisle, Ohio. The raffe will be held
on Oct. 13 during the Lighthouse Festival. All pro-
ceeds will go toward the Lifesaving Station/Educa-
tion Center Museum building fund.
Ottawa Countys
Best Kept Secrets
WHAT: Ottawa County Summer Lunch and Fun Program. In 2011,
concerned citizens thought about the hundreds of Port Clinton students
who are eligible for free or reduced-cost lunches during the school year.
A summer lunch program was created by several local organizations to
continue serving those kids in the summer. The program served 50-60
nutritious lunches two days a week at two sites, to any children who
attended.
This year, the summer lunch program is expanding to three sites
Lakeview Estates, Jefferson Elementary and Bay Meadows adding
additional activities and even more fun for the kids. The Bay Meadows
site will feature a walking School Bus to get children safely to and from
the site.
WHO: The Summer Lunch Program is a grassroots project, it does
not use any federal or state funding, it relies on a community support
group, individuals and 17 + businesses.
HOW TO HELP: Volunteer to attend the lunches, pack the lunches
or donate lunch supplies or activity supplies by calling Summer Lunch
Program Coordinator Mallory Myers at 419-260-5179.

As a part of the bicentennial celebration
of the Battle of Lake Erie, the Council of
the Village of Put-in-Bay is sponsoring a
fag design contest. The winning design
will become the offcial fag of the Village
of Put-in-Bay.
Made famous by Oliver Hazard Perrys
statement: We have met the enemy and
they are ours, the Battle of Lake Erie was
fought on Sept. 10, 1813, near the Village
of Put-in-Bay. Before the battle, Commo-
dore Perry used Put-in-Bay harbor as a
safe anchorage for his vessels and for the
captured British vessels after the battle.
The Battle of Lake Erie was fought be-
tween the British Fleet and the American
Fleet under the command of 23-year-old
Oliver Hazard Perry. In a little over three
hours, the entire British feet was captured.
It was the frst major victory for the Amer-
icans during the War of 1812, the Second
War of Independence.
For contest entry forms, call 419-285-

people with multiple scle-
rosis by signing up for the
MS Walleye Fishing Tour-
nament on June 6. Get a
group of six friends, cus-
tomers or co-workers to fll

boat will set sail from the
Midway Marina in Port
Clinton.
Join more than 150 an-
glers as they participate
in the National Multiple
Sclerosis Societys 23nd
annual Walleye Fishing
Tournament. The anglers
are treated to a continental
breakfast before heading
out to fsh aboard a char-
ter boat with a licensed
charter boat captain at the
helm. Each boat is stocked
with food, beverages, bait
and ice.
When the participants re-
turn in the afternoon, they
take part in a light dinner
and win some great prizes
while their catch is being
cleaned and bagged for
them to take home. Prizes
are awarded for frst, sec-
ond and third place for
largest fsh and stringer.
The cost for a boat with
six people is $1,200. Indi-
vidual tickets are also avail-
able for $250. After May
30, the price for a boat will
increase to $1,300 and in-
dividual tickets will no lon-
ger be sold.
The money raised
through the MS Walleye

living with multiple scle-
rosis. Funds are directed
toward services like trans-
portation, durable medical
equipment loan, friendly-

Mayor Leone of the City of Port Clinton
and Superintendent Patrick Adkins of the
Port Clinton City Schools are pleased to
announce the approval of $406,000 in Safe
Routes to Schools funding from the Ohio
Department of Transportation. The Safe
Routes to Schools program is intended to
establish safer pedestrian access, upgrade
pedestrian signals and signage in proxim-
ity to the schools, and mark the pavement
with proper identifcation symbols. The
approved activities will be undertaken in
the vicinity of the Bataan Memorial El-
ementary School and the Port Clinton
Middle School. The application was a joint
effort between the city, the schools and the
consulting engineering frm of DGL.
The award breakdown, subject to a fnal
project scope meeting with ODOT off-
cials, includes $390,000 for construction
activities and $16,000 for construction en-
gineering.
Mayor Leone stated he was very pleased
that the application for these funds was
approved by ODOT. Leone added that
ODOTS award will provide 100 percent
of the construction costs for these im-
provements which will greatly improve the
safety of the students going to and from
school.
The following is a breakdown of the
proposed activities funded by the ODOT
award.
1. New sidewalks, 5 feet in width with
handicapped ramps, to be constructed
(16,000 square feet) in the following loca-
tions.
On the north side of Alice Street be-
tween Grant and Clinton Streets
On the south side of Cotswood between
Tyler and the Bataan School site
On the south side of Sixth Street from
Grant Street to the curve
On the south side of Sixth Street from
Clinton Street heading westerly to existing
sidewalks
On both sides of Seventh Street going
east from Jefferson to the existing side-
walks
On the north side of 10th Street from
Fulton Street heading west to existing side-
walk*
On the north side of 10th Street from
Jefferson Street to Madison Street
On the west side of Jefferson Street
from 10th Street going north to existing
sidewalk
On the north side of Alice Street from
Madison Street going west to existing side-
walk
On the west side of Fulton Street near
the new parking lot going north to the ex-
isting sidewalk
All sidewalks except on 10th Street from
Fulton heading westerly will be within the
street right-of-way. On 10th Street, it will
be on school property.
2. Various street intersections with exist-
ing sidewalks do not have handicapped
ramps. There are 20 such locations in close
proximity to the two schools. The handi-
capped ramps and necessary sidewalk
improvements (2,000 square feet) will be
made at these locations.
3. Cross walk lines and school signage
will be installed in the areas surrounding
the Bataan School and the Middle School
sites. Thirty-two school signs in total will
be erected between the two school sites
identifying the school zones,
4. Four school fashers signs will be
erected in proximity to the Bataan school
with two on Sixth Street and two on Al-
ice Street. Two school fashers signs will be
erected on Jefferson Street in proximity to
the Middle School.
Superintendent Adkins noted that the
safety of the students is always a very im-
portant factor considered by the Board of
Education in its decision-making process.
He said he is pleased to have had the op-
portunity to work closely with the city in
accomplishing this important task.
This is another example of the great
working relationship that exists between
the schools and city, Adkins said. This
project began under the former admin-
istration and has continued with Mayor
Leone. The timing could not have been
better.

19.
Quartly will be on hand daily and

new seascapes, landscapes and street

powerful canvases are painted from
sketches made or photographs taken
during his travels.
As well as displaying recent can-

inspirations and artistry.

TRACK from 1B
BY YANEEK SMITH
Last week, the Ohio High School
Athletic Association announced that
its members school principals
had, for the second consecutive year,
voted down a measure that wouldve
changed the competitive landscape in
several of Ohios primary sports.
Had the vote, which failed 339-301
(53 percent to 47 percent), passed
by a simple majority, the process by
which schools are placed in playoff
divisions for football, soccer, volley-
ball, basketball, baseball and softball.
OHSAA Commissioner Dan Ross
gave his thoughts on the matter.
I do believe there are many schools
in the state who honestly believe they
do not have a fair shot (of winning
a state championship), Ross said,
highlighting the primary reason the
issue is such a hotly-debated topic in
Ohio.
The problem, according to critics
from the public-school realm, is that
private schools who consistently have
success in sports, like Cleveland St.
Ignatius and Toledo St. Johns, can
draw students from a wider area and,
thus, have a distinct advantage over
public schools.
The proposal, had it passed,
wouldve taken into consideration
other ways to determine how teams
are placed in certain divisions for
athletics, such as how a school ob-
tains students, how many times it has
reached the state/regional tourna-
ment over the last eight years as welll
as the socio-economic factors (de-
termined by the number of students
receiving free lunches at the school).
BY YANEEK SMITH
At the Sandusky Bay Conference
tennis meet at Baywinds Athletic
Club in Sandusky, two area athletes
earned spots on the leagues second
team.
Oak Harbors Eli Boldt, who was
seeded third overall heading into the
competition, went a combined 3-1 to
earned the No. 2 spot on the SBCs
second team. After receiving a bye,
Boldt defeated Edisons Carl Riems in
straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, before falling to
Perkins Josh Rohrbacher in a hard-
fought, three-set match, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6.
Boldt managed to recover, however,
defeating teammate Nik Shay, 6-3,
6-2, and then Port Clintons Noah
Cross, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, to earn second-
team honors. With the loss, Cross
earned the No. 3 spot on the second
team following his loss to Boldt.
Cross went 3-2 in the tournament,
defeating Clydes Sven Werner, 6-2,
6-0, and St. Marys Jimmy Fanning,
6-4, 4-6, 6-4, before falling to Edisons
Connor Russell, 6-2, 6-0. Cross re-
covered, however, defeating Edisons
Matt Fujita, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) before fall-
ing to Boldt.
Port Clintons other two singles
players, Max Mercurio and Jeff Grif-
fn, both lost their frst-round match-
es. Shay won two matches, defeating
Mercurio, 6-0, 6-1 and Hurons Will
Sams, 6-0, 6-1 before falling to Per-
kinss Manickam Manickam, 6-0, 6-0,
and then to Boldt.
The Rockets other singles player,
Ian Rhoades, lost in the frst round to

FAIRWAY VILLAS
Now that another school year is drawing
to a close, your young children are a step
closer to the day when theyll be heading
off to college. Of course, as youre prob-
ably aware, higher education doesnt come
cheap and the costs seem to continu-
ously climb. You can help your children
or even your grandchildren meet these
expenses by investing in a 529 plan. And
this college savings vehicle offers estate-
planning benefts.
As a college funding vehicle, a 529 plan
offers some signifcant benefts. When
you contribute to a 529 plan, your earn-
ings accumulate tax free, provided they
are used for qualifed higher education
expenses. (Keep in mind, though, that 529
plan distributions not used for qualifed
expenses may be subject to federal and
state income tax and a 10% IRS penalty.)
Furthermore, your 529 plan contribu-
tions may be deductible from your state
taxes. However, 529 plans vary, so be sure
to check with your tax advisor. And the
lifetime contribution limits for 529 plans
are quite generous; while these limits vary
by state, many plans allow contributions
well in excess of $200,000. Plus, a 529 plan
is fexible: If the child, grandchild or other
benefciary decides against college, you can
transfer the unused funds to someone else,
tax and penalty free.
Now, lets turn to a 529 plans estate-
planning benefts. If you think that you
may need to reduce the size of your taxable
estate, and you also want to create a legacy
you may be able to enjoy during your life-
time, you may fnd that the 529 plan offers
a solution for you. When you establish and
contribute to a 529 plan, the assets leave
your estate but they dont leave your
control. If your named benefciary decides
against college and you dont have another
family member to whom you can transfer
the account or if you simply change
your mind about funding the 529 plan
you can get your money back at any time,
although, as mentioned above, youll have
to pay taxes, and possibly a 10% IRS pen-
alty, on the earnings.
Your contributions to a 529 plan also
qualify for the $13,000 annual gift tax
exclusion, so you can give large amounts
each year without incurring the gift tax.
In the investment world, you can fnd
many vehicles that can help you make
progress toward one goal. But its far less
common to fnd something that may give
you a boost toward two. And when the two
goals are helping a child or grandchild go
to college and lowering the value of your
taxable estate while still maintaining
control of your assets youve got an
investment worth considering. So consult
with your tax and fnancial advisors to
determine if a 529 plan is right for you.
And if it is, think about taking action soon,
because the more years you can contribute
to a 529 plan, the better the outlook for
both your future student and your estate
plans.

ation.
