TELL TALES from 1A
Which stands in stark contrast to three
living room-style visitation areas flled
with comfy furniture, games and toys for
all ages. Families use these spaces for su-
pervised court-ordered visitation. Accord-
ing to Juvenile and Probate Judge Kathleen
Giesler, the court uses the site primarily in
cases of abuse, neglect and dependency.
It gives a place where children can visit
with their parents where they continue to
be protected but theyve made it as close
to a home environment as possible, the
judge said. It makes families comfortable.
And since the end goal of any of these
court cases is reconciliation, Giesler said
the service is invaluable. The visits allow
the children to maintain or rebuild rela-
tionships with a non-custodial parent. In
addition, the site offers a neutral site for
custody exchanges.
Although both services are offered for a
small fee $14 for exchanges or $15 for
visitations no one will be turned away
for the inability to pay. Funding for the
site comes through grants and generos-
ity. From the carpets on the foors and the
cleaning products in the cabinets to the
computer equipment in the offce, the site
is literally flled with donations.
Joyful Connections sees 22 visits and four
supervised exchanges a week. Thanks to
the support the organization has received
over the years, it has served more than 140
families since its inception.

FIRELANDS from 1A
The land was donated by Kenneth and
Jeannette Focht in memory of Philip and
Margaret Freeman, Bill Koster offered
up matching funds for the expansion in
memory of his wife Marcia and later, a
special loft was built with the help of Doug
Focht for a Wicks Organ that had come
from someones home. The stained-glass
windows depicting the Nicene Creed were
even made by 33 church members. Brand,
along with Joan Moore and long-time Rev.
Robert Butcher, came up with the design
and helped lead the efforts.
It makes you feel like youve left a lega-
cy, Brand said.
The legacy of the church as whole ex-
tends far beyond the building.
We initiated the Mobile Meals pro-
gram in Catawba and Portage Townships,
said Butcher, pastor at the church for 24
years. We started the Wide World Shop.
We started the Vineyard on Catawba re-
tirement community. We started the Mu-
sical Arts Series at Firelands. We started
Firelands Day Care, which is currently
the highest rated day care program in the
county. We started the Firelands food pan-
try which to this day day provides food for
a dozen families every week.
In addition, the church is a site for the
Summer Lunch Program and this week-
end, will be the site for a celebration of
past, present and future.
Im excited to have people come and see
what vital congregation we are, said Rev.
Jeanne Gay, who has served at the church
since 2009.
According to Gay, the 10: 30 a.m. Sunday
service will include former pastors and
hymns written for the congregation over
the years. After that, a potluck dinner and
opportunity to share memories is planned.
What I look forward to most at the an-
niversary celebration is seeing the people
and sharing the memories of what we were
able, by the Holy Spirit, to accomplish over
those 24 years of my tenure as pastor, said
Butcher.
All are welcome to come out to the cel-
ebratory service at 10:30 a.m. Pentecost
Sunday, May 27, to be followed by a lun-
cheon at 11:45 a.m.

With the cold weather well behind us, the light-
house and museum have been cleaned and special
tours are now taking place.
The regular hours have been changed as there
were more people waiting for the lighthouse to
open, and not as many near closing time. The
weekday hours are: noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday after
Memorial Day through Friday before Labor Day;
4 to 6 p.m. Sunday evenings June through August;
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. the second Saturday of each
month May through October. The last tour to
climb the lighthouse is 15 minutes before closing.
Many reliable docents are returning this year,
along with a few new volunteers, but more docents
are needed. All of the displays are well-marked and
a Fast Fact Sheet is available to answer any ques-
tions that may be asked. New docents are always
placed with returning workers, so it is an enjoy-
able way to spend a few hours. Call Jan at 419-569-
0211 or Mary at 419-798-4877 to sign up.
All of the Memorial bricks that were ordered
over the winter months are now in place in the
circular walkway. There is a total of 535 inscribed
bricks laid as of today. This area is very popular
with visitors and locals to sit and enjoy the lake
and lighthouse.
A nature and nautical sale is being planned for
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 14 on the museum property.
Organizers are looking for any articles pertaining
to nature, nautical and the lighthouse. To donate
any items for this worthwhile cause, call Mary at
419-798-4877.
Tickets are on sale for a chance to win a unique,
matted and framed picture of the Marblehead
Lighthouse, handmade entirely from colored fne
silk thread. The picture was donated by John and
Carolyn Brichacek who own World Threads Gal-
lery in New Carlisle, Ohio. The raffe will be held
on Oct. 13 during the Lighthouse Festival. All pro-
ceeds will go toward the Lifesaving Station/Educa-
tion Center Museum building fund.

Best Kept Secrets
WHAT: Ottawa County Summer Lunch and Fun Program. In 2011,
concerned citizens thought about the hundreds of Port Clinton students
who are eligible for free or reduced-cost lunches during the school year.
A summer lunch program was created by several local organizations to
continue serving those kids in the summer. The program served 50-60
nutritious lunches two days a week at two sites, to any children who
attended.
This year, the summer lunch program is expanding to three sites
Lakeview Estates, Jefferson Elementary and Bay Meadows adding
additional activities and even more fun for the kids. The Bay Meadows
site will feature a walking School Bus to get children safely to and from
the site.
WHO: The Summer Lunch Program is a grassroots project, it does
not use any federal or state funding, it relies on a community support
group, individuals and 17 + businesses.
HOW TO HELP: Volunteer to attend the lunches, pack the lunches
or donate lunch supplies or activity supplies by calling Summer Lunch
Program Coordinator Mallory Myers at 419-260-5179.

As a part of the bicentennial celebration
of the Battle of Lake Erie, the Council of
the Village of Put-in-Bay is sponsoring a
fag design contest. The winning design
will become the offcial fag of the Village
of Put-in-Bay.
Made famous by Oliver Hazard Perrys
statement: We have met the enemy and
they are ours, the Battle of Lake Erie was
fought on Sept. 10, 1813, near the Village
of Put-in-Bay. Before the battle, Commo-
dore Perry used Put-in-Bay harbor as a
safe anchorage for his vessels and for the
captured British vessels after the battle.
The Battle of Lake Erie was fought be-
tween the British Fleet and the American
Fleet under the command of 23-year-old
Oliver Hazard Perry. In a little over three
hours, the entire British feet was captured.
It was the frst major victory for the Amer-
icans during the War of 1812, the Second
War of Independence.

Get out on Lake Erie for
a day of fshing and help
people with multiple scle-
rosis by signing up for the
MS Walleye Fishing Tour-
nament on June 6. Get a
group of six friends, cus-
tomers or co-workers to fll
a boat. The fully stocked
boat will set sail from the
Midway Marina in Port
Clinton.
Join more than 150 an-
glers as they participate
in the National Multiple
Sclerosis Societys 23nd
annual Walleye Fishing
Tournament. The anglers
are treated to a continental
breakfast before heading
out to fsh aboard a char-
ter boat with a licensed
charter boat captain at the
helm. Each boat is stocked
with food, beverages, bait
and ice.
When the participants re-
turn in the afternoon, they
take part in a light dinner
and win some great prizes
while their catch is being
cleaned and bagged for
them to take home. Prizes
are awarded for frst, sec-
ond and third place for
largest fsh and stringer.
The cost for a boat with
six people is $1,200. Indi-
vidual tickets are also avail-
able for $250. After May
30, the price for a boat will
increase to $1,300 and in-
dividual tickets will no lon-
ger be sold.
The money raised
through the MS Walleye
Tournament helps more
than 20,000 Ohio residents
living with multiple scle-
rosis. Funds are directed
toward services like trans-
portation, durable medical
equipment loan, friendly-
visitation programs for
those who are homebound
or hospitalized, and self-
help groups. Funds also
support research efforts at
Ohio institutions like the
Cleveland Clinic Founda-
tion and The Ohio State
University Medical Center
where MS researchers are
working to fnd the cause
and a cure for the disease.
Join Presenting Spon-
sor Shamrock Companies,
Inc., and other participants
as they search for the elu-
sive big catch all while
fshing for a cure. For in-
formation, call Tony Ber-
nard at 614-515-4608 or
