Students can create a Rainbow Writing Journal by laying colored construction papers 1/2 apart and folding the papers over to create tabs. Students can insert their writing for each page. Students can include in the journal one writing sample for each selection, so their progress can be seen throughout the year. Topic: What do you see, hear, and feel during an earthquake (E.L.L. Handbook p.18) Topic: How would you prepare for an earthquake? (Brainstorm ideas: flashlight, batteries, canned food)

Writing Journal Entry Topic: What they want to do when they grow up (E.L.L. Handbook p.96, 98) Topic: Describe the city of Stockton or another city using vocabulary words from the E.L.L. Handbook p.94 and create a city by stuffing old newspapers into a paper bag, fold the top 1 down and staple, then add a roof, door, windows, etc. Next, glue the house on to green construction paper to create the yard, add fence, trees, etc. Put all the houses together to create the neighborhood for a city.
