On this day in 1940, Hattie McDaniel wins the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of former Tara slave "Mammy" in "Gone With the Wind," the 1939 blockbuster film that took home eight Academy Awards. Though McDaniel was the first African American to win the prestigious award, she was criticized by some groups, including the NAACP, who claimed she was reinforcing black stereotypes. McDaniel responded by saying she'd rather play a servant on the silver screen than be one in real life.

School Board Accountability

"In the first place God

made idiots. This was for practice. Then He made School Boards."
Mark Twain

Mark Twain's withering contempt for a body elected to oversee the person hired to run schools remains as fresh today as in 1897 when the writer penned the words. One Stanford University case was argued by the Hoover Institution, a conservative think tank on campus. The opening salvo was a description of school boards as dysfunctional families filled with unlovable types such as would-be politicians, teacher-union sympathizers and single-issue advocates. They are people who would run screaming from the label conservative, yet they block reform efforts such as charter schools and high-stakes testing in favor of conserving the status quo.

1,585 pupils ranked in the top 10 high schools statewide. LARRY STANLEY is not a union sympathizer. Every employee should be fairly compensated for an honest day s work. Collective bargaining should never include a guaranteed job or pay scales not commensurate with industry standards. Attaining tenure, a protected status in academia, should be a reward only for continued effectiveness and high performance in the job. LARRY STANLEY knows many issues face school boards. The responsibilities of managing a school system, even with a hired superintendent and staff, must remain accountable to the taxpayers who support the system. LARRY STANLEY is a conservative. He will provide openness and accountability. He will stand to protect taxpayers. He will serve as an advocate for students, parents and system staff. Henry County Schools averaged 24.8 from a possible score of 100 in college preparedness, reported on May 8th by a US News nationwide analysis. We read about college readiness in the news and how important it is. But until now we were not provided a national measurement to compare how well we prepare students for postsecondary education. The Georgia Department of Education has released a new measure of student achievement for public high schools around the state. The measure is a four-year high school graduation rate. Simply, it is calculated using the number of students who graduate within four years of starting high school. Henry County Schools did not fare well as shown below: Eagle s Landing High graduation rate was 64.24 percent Luella High s rate was 73.58 percent Dutchtown High s rate was 74.61 percent Woodland High s rate was 84.63 Henry County High s rate was 72.81 Ola High s rate was 83.01 Union Grove High had the highest graduation at 91.91 percent. We cannot be satisfied with the status quo. From Stockbridge to McDonough to Locust Grove the effectiveness and quality of education provided varies widely. Larry Stanley s opponent says at his website: My decision to run for the District 2 BOE seat was made for one reason. I think I am the best person to help preserve & protect our communities [sic] integrity. THAT is simply not enough! Larry Stanley is forthright and a fighter! He steadfastly clings to his ideals, while reaching out for consensus and consultation; all of which are great qualities in a leader. Larry Stanley has been willing to question the conventional wisdom - to look around and ask whether our politicians were in sync with the sentiments of most Henry County citizens. Larry questions the notions that our elected officials cannot tackle multiple challenges at once. Larry Stanley has tenacity and vision to recognize what should and could be done. Larry has courage to stand up and act in the face of considerable pressure and proven ability to effectively get the job done.

Voters in Henry County s District 2 are urged to choose experience. Choose proven abilities. Larry Stanley will back-up his good intentions with conservative principles and determined action.

"Effective strategic communication" they call it.

We know it as Bovine Scatology!
It is campaign season. We must expect meaningless rhetoric to fill the blogosphere and speeches. Conservatives have long cautioned readers and fellow patriots to beware of good sounding phrases and veiled accusations against the honest and dependable candidates and officials who fight the good fight. We have examples from the Obama administration that would fill a library. Such nonsense as The Tea Party Stopped Economic Growth is false on its face and does not require explanation. Closer to home there is a local blogger who was once expected to give opinions in an authoritative manner, but is really most interested in painting a false picture only to advance his chosen candidates. Writing for the campaign of Mr. Rutledge, previously identified as The Puppet,

the blogger constantly refers to Steve Davis Transportation Tax T-SPLOST as if Representative Davis single-handedly foisted the proposed tax on unsuspecting taxpayers of Henry County. Of course that is a lie no matter how the blogger paints it. The same blogger says Rep. Davis is out of touch. That is also far-fetched as Davis has already served four terms 8 years with a conservative voting record and he remains completely open and accessible. The strategic communication is pure propaganda. It is what a candidate throws about when he brings nothing to the table; no experience, no personal knowledge of real issues, no clout or influence that could benefit the voters of House District 109. A smidgen of truth is mixed with a pack of lies. It is all designed to impress the ignorant and unknowing voter. For example, polls show DeKalb and Fulton counties generally support the new tax. Henry and Rockdale voters do not. Rep. Davis represents Henry, Rockdale and Newton counties not Fulton or DeKalb or Cobb or Gwinnett. Yet the ghost of accusation says Davis is responsible for T-SPLOST and the blogger splashes that ugly paint like an artist. As stated many times already, Rep. Steve Davis has become strong and influential in the GA House. Henry, Newton and Rockdale need experienced conservative leadership in our delegation. A newbie with no experience or proven ability to navigate the workings of the Georgia House of Representatives simply cannot be effective. He is simply following the mantra of the puppet masters and will serve only a handful of citizens those who propped him up and selected him as this term s challenger for Rep. Davis.

Re-elect Rep. Steve Davis, a real conservative with no strings attached.

McDonough secures loan for water, sewer improvements

The Clean Water State Revolving Fund loan was announced by Kevin Clark, executive director of the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA). McDonough applied for the funds, which can only be approved with a recommendation from the Georgia legislature. State Rep. Steve Davis (R-McDonough) gave his recommendation during the recently completed legislative session. GEFA does numerous loans per year lowinterest loans to help communities throughout Georgia, said Davis. We are such a high-growth area ... that it was a struggle to keep up with infrastructure for the needs of the citizens. Clark expressed appreciation to Gov. Nathan Deal and Davis for their support in the project. For more information, call (404) 584-1000, or visit WWW.GEFA.ORG.

now. I also will not publicly endorse anyone for any of the open seats on the Board of Commissioners. As a resident, a voter and a taxpayer, I will only say that we cannot afford four more years of the status quo, and we cannot afford to go ten years in reverse. I look forward to following the campaigns as a private citizen, enjoying the summer with my family, and continuing to tell Henry County's stories on local television and in print. May God richly bless our community. Monroe Roark May 22, 2012

Poll: Suburban voters oppose transportation referendum

WSB-TV Atlanta
HTTP://WWW.WSBTV.COM/NEWS/NEWS/LOCAL/POLLSUBURBAN-VOTERS-OPPOSE-TRANSPORTATIONREFEREN /NPBJM/

The poll found 42 percent support the referendum, while 45 percent oppose it. Thirteen percent remain undecided. Voters in DeKalb and Fulton counties showed overwhelming support for the tax, by a 52 to 33 percent margin. The numbers are nearly exact opposites in the other eight suburban counties where the measure is opposed by a 20 point margin. I think the critical T in TSPLOST is trust. A lot of voters don't necessarily believe the state will do with the $6.1 billion what it's supposed to do, which is unclogging traffic, said Channel 2 political analyst Bill Crane. They don t believe that this $6 billion and the pennies out of their pocket will make things better.

Roark Ends Campaign

After much prayer and careful consideration, I have decided not to place my name on the ballot in the 2012 race for chairman of the Henry County Board of Commissioners. I am deeply grateful for the encouraging words I have heard from many local residents during the past three months as well as the financial assistance I have received. I wish to urge all voters to pay close attention to the candidates in each of the commission races this summer, as well as those of our legislative delegation, and insist that they specify what they will do RIGHT if elected instead of what their opponents do WRONG. Criticize an incumbent if you must, but you had better have your own plan in place to fix the problem. If not, the constant negativity will wear on voters quickly. So far I have not said a single negative word about anyone running this year and I will not start
