PROVISION OF LIMITED USE SUBWAYCOMPARISON OF CUT & COVER METHOD Vs BOX PUSHING TECHNIQUE

pla nned to be closed by diverting to either existing level crossing, existing bridge or by construction of new RUB. Earlier work for new RUB are proposed to be constructed by using push through technique. Then it is proposed to carry out work by cut & cover method which has greatly enhanced the economy. This paper deals with the comparison of these both technique. 2.RBs policy of closing LC gate : As per latest RB policy vide letter no 2006/CE-I/MISC-2(RUB) dated 25/2/2008 , the closing of existing level crossing gate may be planned by provision of limited use subway having dimension not more than 4m X 3.6 m in plan head 30. ME also directed there will be no constraint for fund in this plan head. 3. Work Planned : Accordingly different work proposed the details of them are as follows: Diversion through existing LC14 Nos Diversion through existing bridge- 7 Nos Diversion through newly constructed limited use sub way 8 Nos On single line section 3 nos On double line section 5 nos Diversion through newly constructed normal height sub way- 1 Nos on double line

1. Introduction: Many level crossing are

4.Box Pushing technique :

Three work for closing of level crossing no. AP22, AP26 and AP34 are sanctioned in PH 30 in la w book each having sanctioned value of Rs 43 Lakhs The Scope in this work was as follows: Construction of thrust bed. Casting of box segment along with cutting edge. Pushing of box segment by using hydraulic jacks.

Item proposed in this work are as follows:

NS- Cas ting jackin g precas t RCC Box M 1 minim um M-45 grade concrete m ix, below Railway track under running traffic conditions by box pus hing technique including providing thrus t bed and cas ting arrangem ents with contractors design, providing drag sheet on top of box, providing interm ediate jacking points if required, dewatering including all tem porary works m aking joint of box watertight with all contractors m en, machinery, and m aterial required for carrying out work in all respect for RCC Box thrus t bed. (Rate Rs . 21312.50 for one m eter 2 / per meter le ngth. Size of box 4.00m X 3.50m ) (ins ide dimensions )

The percentage received are 95.786% Above the basic cost Cost per meter for pushing the segmental box other than wing wall, return wall etc = Rs 5,81,831/-

Payment schedule for Box P ushing item proposed are as follows:

After approval of all Relevant Drawings by H.Qrs : 2% After completion of Thrust Bed & anchors : 10% After Casting of Box segment : 40% After pushing full length of RCC Box (Bo x pushing length as prescribed in schedule or as per site requirement) : 43% After completion of all work : 5% After considering the lowest offer value the offer comes out to be Rs. 73.5 Lakhs per level crossin g. There are guidelines from the cost of RUB should not exceed Rs 50 Lakhs So alternative method for execution are studied and it is noticed that similar type of closing 11 unmanned level crossing by using cut and cover method on Guna-Maksi was carried out recently on Bhopal

division. The method studied and same is applied for provision of limited use subway. 5. Cut and cover method : The various activities involved are: a)Casting of box segment each of 2 m length- 5 Nos Size of box 3.5 X 4.0 clear dimension Thick ness of box 400 mm Weight of one segment 13.28 m3 X 2.5 t/ m3 = 33.2 tones b)Placement of segmental boxes in traffic block Crane of 120 t capacity required Capacity of crane required at 8 m radius will at least be 50 t Quantum of earth work = 118 m3 before block + 200 m3 during block 2 Hitachi pocklain of 225 capacity will be required for this v olume of earth work to be execute in 1.30 Hrs Item proposed in the work are as follows:
NS- Placement of precast RCC segmental Box MT with the help of road crane at desired 10
location, carefully by lifting and packing method, during traffic and pow er block w ith all contractor labour tools and material, crane, machinery, preparation of surface as directed by Engineer, including filling of joints by epoxy mortar and laying of required sand including cost of epoxy and sand, including all material and labour, tools, plants, machinery etc. w ith all lead and lift. Providing RCC M-40 controlled concrete in segmental box w ith 20 mm crushed stone agreegate including form w ork, shuttering, staging, mixing placing vibrating etc. complete as directed by Engineer in-charge. Supplying MS plain / Tor steel bars conforming to IS specific ation and transporting to site including loading and unloading w ith all contractors labour, tools and plant complete. Note- 1) Provision for wastage / rolling margin/overlaps is included in basic rate. 2) Payment against w ork done will be made in accordance w ith the special conditions for contract with contractors steel. 3) Specification of the above item as per special condition w ith contractors steel are 2200.00 Rs.Tw o Thousand Tw o Hundred And Paise Nil Only

6. Box pushing Vs Cut & cover method : By adopting

Cut & cover method there will be saving in cost per Level crossing of by Rs. 23.5 lakhs Supervision required for box pushing will not be required. Hence more work can be planned with existing staff There will be joint at every 2m which is not desirable There will be requirement of traffic block of 4 Hrs and also possibility of disruption to traffic in event of crane failure There is saving of Rs 4,35,877 per meter barrel length (Rs 5,81,831 - 1,45,954 ) In big yards having of number of lines the same technique may not be utilized

7. Conclusion : Cut & cover method is more economical for single

line work. The same may be used in double line section in electic traction which will cost Rs. 75 lakhs for closing e xisting level crossing as against sanction upto 1.5 Cr for which proposal are being sanctioned in RB level. Box pushing technique gives less joints in imbakment and do not require traffic blocks. but may cost more. If longer barrel length cost of box pushing gets lesser and may become comparable with cut & cover method which may be worked out.
