LESSON PLAN 5

Name School Subject Topic : Bovito Achumi : G.M.S Shena old : Science : Natural Disasters Enrol. No -122863452 Cl -VIII Date Time

I. Entry Behaviour:
Students are aware of Natural Disasters such as earthquakes, floods, droughts, cyclones, landslides, forest fires which is the product of Natural Disasters. II. General Objectives: 1. Students will know about Disaster management. 2. Students will understand the principle of lightning conductor. 3. Students will understand fire hazard. 4. Students will know earthquakes causes, effects and protection. 5. Students will know protective measures first aid. III. Introduction: Good morning students! I am Bovito Achumi and I will be taking your science class today. I hope all of you will cooperate with me to learn this lesson. To begin with our lesson can anyone tell me what is Natural Disasters. Students: The destruction cause by earthquakes, landslides rain floods etc is called Natural Disasters. Teacher: very good! It seems that all of you are aware of Biodiversity. Now, today, we will try to learn more about the Natural Disasters.

IV. Presentation:

Teaching Specific Objective points 1. Disaster 1. Student will learn the meaning of management. Disaster management. 2. Students will able to understand the attempt to prevent hazards from developing into disasters to reduce the effects of disasters when they occur.

Teachers Activity 1. Teacher will explain the meaning of Disaster management. 2. Teacher will explain the efforts to prevent disaster such as building a dam on a river to prevent flooding, making laws related to disaster management, e.g. making it compulsory to build quake resistant buildings in earthquake prone areas. 3. Teacher will explain preparing for disaster before it occurs. Common preparedness measures include emergency warning system, developing trained volunteers, proper maintenance and training of emergency services this includes the mobilization of the necessary emergency services such as fire- fighters, police and ambulance crews.

Pupils Activity 1. The student will note down the meaning of Disaster management. 2. Students will listen attentively about the explanation of the teacher

Evaluation 1. Student. Tell me about the meaning of Disaster management

2. Principle 1. Student will know the lightning 1. Teacher tells about the idea of using lightning of lightning conductor. conductors to protect tall buildings. Teacher writes conductor. on a black board. A lightening conductor consists 2. Students will know about the safety of a metal rod ending in spikes at the top. The during lightning. lower end of the rod is attached to a copper plate buried deep in the earth. If lightning does strike

1. Students listen attentively about the teacher. 2. Students will note down the main points from the black board.

1.What principle lightning conductor.

is of

the building, it flows harmlessly to the earth through the metal rod, and no damage is done to the building. 3. Fire 1. Students will know about the 1. Teacher explains a fire can be extinguished by hazard. protective means of fire accidents. either cooling down the burning substance or by cutting off the air supply. In case of small fires this can be done by throwing mud or sand over the fire. Using a fire extinguisher, if the fire is big the best way is to immediately ring up the fire brigade. 1. Students will listen to the teacher attentively. 2. Students will ask question/ difficulties (if any). 1. Tell me in your own words how to prevent fire hazard.

4.Earthquake causes, effect and protection

1. Students will know about seismic waves, Richter scale. 2. Students will know about the main causes of earthquake. 3. Students will learn the effect and protection of earthquake.

1. Teacher will explain earthquake is caused by shaking and sudden movements in earths crust. The wave generated by earthquake are called seismic waves which are recorded by an instrument called seismograph and the magnitude or intensity of an earthquake is measured by the Richter Scale, an earthquake of intensity 4.5 is considered moderate and can disturb loose objects.

1. Students will note down the important points from the black board. 2. Students will listen attentively to 1. Students tell the teachers explanation. me the effect and protection when earthquake occurred.

2. The teacher narrates the earths lithosphere is divided into about 20 parts called tectonic plates. These plates float over the hot magma below. And are therefore in relative motion to each other, when these plates collide and the rock at the joint

is sufficiently slippery the plates slide over each other, little by little causing earth to shake. 3. Teacher explain some points on effect of earthquake Damage to human made structures, damage to towns and cities, loss of human and animal life. 4. Teacher narrates roofs should be made as light as possible. If there is prone to earthquake roof made of timber should be used. If trapped in your home or building take shelter under a table and do not move till the shaking stops. Protect your head with your arms; avoid using a lift no not stay near the windows bookcases mirrors hanging pots fans.

5. First aid.

1. Students will know how to prevent 1. Teacher will explain first aid for burns, injury, 1. Students will listen attentively the injury from getting worse. minor injury, deep wounds, and broken bones. the explanation of the teacher about the first aid. 2. Students note sown the main 1. Tel me how points from the blackboard. can you apply first aid for minor injury.

V. Recapitulation: Teacher will recapitulate by asking the following questions: 1. What is the meaning of disaster management? 2. What is the principle of lightning conductor? 3. How can you prevent fire hazard? 4. How can we protect ourselves when earthquake occurred? 5. How can you apply first aid for minor injury? VI. Assignment: Write in your own words about Disaster management. VII. Black board Summary: 1. Disaster management are mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. 2. Clouds get charged during a storm. This causes lightning and thunder. 3. The shaking of the ground by the sudden movements in the earths crust is called an earthquake. 4. The waves generated by an earthquake are called seismic waves. 5. A minor burn should be immediately cooled with cold water.
