Diamond Bar Resident Creates Agricultural Center

In 2008, Rishi Kumar planted food in his yard. Gradually, he expanded the garden, which covered 5000 square feet of his home with over 40 different types of plants. Holly Liu Asst. News Editor The Growing Home and Learning Center held its grand opening ceremony last summer; since then it has gradually become a certified farm and learning center. This farm was founded by Rishi Kumar who took the idea of going green and made it into a reality when he developed his garden in Diamond Bar into a legitimate farm. Starting in 2008, Kumar planted food all over his backyard. Gradually, he planted food in his front and side yard as well. In total, 5000 square feet of his home is covered in over 40 different types of plants bearing an assortment of herbs, flowers, fruits, and vegetables. The Growing Home started as a means of feeding organic foods to Kumars family; however, as the farm gradually expanded, Kumar began the Community Supported Agriculture. Through this program, people can apply to become share-holders of the farm by contributing financially to it in return for weekly products. The CSA program does not allow [Please see GREEN on page 3]

CAMPAIGN: On January 20, a school-wide voting took place during fourth period. Votes were tallied and the winner of the reelection was announced on the same day. Austin Kong A&E Editor The United Student Body held a re-election for the Speaker of the House position for the USB Executive Board after the former Speaker of the House, Cole Martinez, decided to resign prior to serving his term due to personal reasons.

Junior David Chen Wins Re-election for Speaker of the House Position
David Chen will be filling in Martinezs position. USB has a lot of potential. [The members] are the examples of what the students should [be]. They are the image of the school. [The position] is a hard and tough job. I left for myself and not because of the group of people in USB. I wish I could have led them because they were an amazing group, shared Martinez The re-election was announced at the beginning of the new year and applications for potential candidates were due on January 11. The term for the new USB Executive Board and commissioners began at the start of the new semester. The day after the new commissioners were installed into their terms, Martinez contacted Activities Director Chelsea Grunseth about a possible resignation. [The Board] had to follow USB protocol which meant that we could not appoint the person with the second highest votes. We had to redo the entire election. [The situation] was difficult to comprehend and it was a hard time. USB felt like it was were in the dark, expressed USB President junior Will Honda. After the Executive Board discussed the future of the position, the Speaker of the House stepped down and USB Vice President junior Grace Sim began to plan the re-election. The decision made by the past [Speaker of the House] was abrupt and especially with the new USB commissioners already in their positions, we had to get the election done as soon as possible, commented

Food Truck Festival to Arrive

FEAST: Admission for the Four Wheel Food Fest is two dollars for adults, one dollar for students, and free for kids five and under. Food items are not included in the admission fee. Angie Zhang Asst. Feature Editor In order to formulate a logo for the upcoming Four Wheel Food Fest, the United Student Body has decided to hold a competition for the best design among its own members. The actual festival will be held on Saturday, February 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the front parking lot of Diamond Bar High School. USB members were told to design a logo that both symbolized the event and represented DBHS. The winning design will be printed on posters and flyers that will advertise the event. Sophomore Class President Irene Na stated, This [event] was created for fun but we also needed a logo. With the [involvement] of all of USB, we have more options to choose from. The festival will include a variety of food trucks, such as Don Chows Tacos, which was seen on Food Networks TV show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, Slummin Gourmet, Sweet Es Bake Shop, and

Sim. On January 20, a schoolwide voting took place; votes were tallied and the winner of the re-election was announced on the same day. Among the candidates, junior Kris Nalla was disqualified due to some controversial flyers. It was unfortunate that Cole had to resign due to personal issues, but as the new Speaker of the House, I plan to work just as hard as Cole would have. I will make sure that USB 2012 becomes the best USB ever! expressed Chen.

Heritage Schools Open Registration

CULTURE: Officials of the heritage schools can complete their registration online in order to receive approval of their school by the state. Registration is now open. Prisca Kim Asst. News Editor As a way of furthering education and teaching students about culture, the California Department of Education recently approved of registering heritage schools in the state. The Heritage School in Diamond Bar is the Sky Village Enterprises LLC School Connection run by Olivia Hidayat. Heritage schools specialize in incorporating curriculum about language, culture, and traditions of a foreign country. will possibly be established. In addition to the pool, a coach room, a locker room, public restrooms, and stadium seating with shade will be created. The center is also anticipated to have a two story classroom building. This building will include 20 math classrooms and several offices. When asked about the delay of the pool, Catherine Real, the principal of DBHS responded, The project of this magnitude takes a great deal of time and has many steps and red-tape to go through. It wasnt necessarily delayed as much as it just required many steps of approval before being realized. Currently, underground gas service, underground utilities, site preparation are already complete. Final approval processes for the pool, shade structure, and above-ground Even though heritage schools are considered schools, these programs do not entirely replace schools since they serve as additional, out-ofschool programs. By allowing California to enforce heritage schools, students can be better informed about different cultures. Officials of the heritage schools can complete their registration online in order to receive approval of their school by the state. Registration is now open; heritage schools must register online every year by the end of January. This new system facilitates the process of verifying that schools are following the state requirements regarding health, safety, operation, and parent notification. The current project came to life with the passing of bond measures S & Y in 2007, stated Real. These measures were awarded to Novus Construction for $10.7 million, which funds the project. Real commented, I am thrilled that this project is finally becoming a reality and even happier that it was named after our esteemed former Principal, Denis R. Paula man who was instrumental in making this project happen, in establishing and cultivating our Brahma culture, and who has supported the four As: Academics, Activities, the Arts, and Athletics throughout his long and impressive career at Diamond Bar High School.

21 Students Accepted into All-State Band and Orchestra

AUDITION: In order to audition into All-State Band and Orchestra, the musicians had to send in videos of themselves playing different types of scales and audition excerpts. Emily Hwang Staff Writer Twenty-one young musicians from Diamond Bar High School were accepted to be a part of the 2012 AllState Band and Orchestra. As competition for college admission proves to be tougher e a ch ye a r, th o u sa n d s o f high school students across the nation struggle to make themselves stand out among the crowd. Besides maintaining a solid grade point average, becoming the basketball team captain, and committing time to working at the local hospital, students have found that even these obligations fall short of universities expectations. Because of this, students have found another method of trying to impress the college administration office: creating clubs. Although building a new organization may be beneficial to the club founders, the strategy is actually lowering the overall excellence among clubs. When we start to notice a gradual pattern in which matters are not dealt with consistently, at times, we have to question the actions of those in charge. The United Student Body officers, who are responsible for administering passage of new clubs and keeping tabs on the organizations, have been far too flexible in their decisions to approve clubs. Only one to two organizations have been rejected in the previous year while numerous others have been accepted. USB needs to formulate a new way of approving clubs, especially since the number of clubs will only continue to rise in the upcoming years. Still, we cannot fully bring ourselves to blame the USB

organization. Students need to realize that managing a club is no easy task, taking hours upon hours of planning. Yet students here on campus have a reputation for not following through with their original proposal for their clubs. Out of the 85 clubs that are supposedly active, almost half of them exist in name only while the rest having neglected to plan meetings and host events. If this trend continues, there will not only be an overwhelming number of outdated clubs but also a larger number of clubs who serve no purpose to the school. DBHS has a wide diversity of clubs, a trait that should be laudable. However due to the ease of forming a club, there are now more clubs than necessary. Numerous clubs are so similar that sometimes the only thing that makes them unique is their name and sometimes even that proves to be similar. With this many organizations, it becomes almost impossible for all the clubs to have equal representation on campus. Forming a club on campus has become so facile that it has not only created a surplus amount that is too difficult to manage but is has also ruined the uniqueness among clubs. Clubs are more than just something that is added to a college application, they should be cared for and passed down. If a more effective way of managing clubs is enacted, we might be able to restore quality back into the system.

Select to Elect
Marcel Boubion Editorial Editor This year, most of Americas class of 2012 will be able to vote for the president of the United States for the first time in November. It is, admittedly, over ambitious to suggest that seniors should, along with submitting college applications, keep up-todate with all of the politics shown on television. Nevertheless, the next president is going to have a huge impact on my college experience and will, hopefully, have a positive influence over the job market that I will be taking part in as soon as I get my degree. Likewise, the next president will play a tremendous role in the lives of other seniors, and it is disappointing to realize that most of them will not be taking this voting responsibility seriously. While issues such as immigration, domestic oil, and international affairs are important and will likely affect how I vote, job security, housing, economics, and other issues that directly affect my college experience will have a bigger influence over my selection. Over the next ten months, I will be looking toward any candidate who seeks to curb the rapidly inflating college tuition. As it stands, it seems that the candidates for this years election will include current President Barack Obama and either Rick Santorum or Mitt Romney. Of these three candidates, I can honestly say that I do not fully understand all of their policies. Rather, I have a general understanding of what direction their campaign will take them and the sort of changes they are likely to make. So far, this is enough for me to have a good idea of whom I would like to see win the election. In 2008, President Barack

MARCELS MATTERS
Obama was elected during a time when economics threatened families everywhere and war efforts endangered lives everyday. Although these were, and still are, topics debated heavily when discussing the United States next president, they are not the only relevant issues to the leaders of Americas next generation. For example, while healthcare plans might seem incredibly dull and drawn out, the changes that were made in Obamas first years of presidency will affect me for the next ten years of my life. Now that policy has been altered, I will be covered by my parents insurance plan as long as I am a full-time student under the age of 27. These are the sorts of changes that should be noted by students over the next ten months. It is ciritical that students pay attention to aspects of certain campaings that will benefit them, while keeping in in mind that while one policy might be helpful, there may be others policies advocated by the same candidate that are not so accommodating. It would be difficult for seniors to remember exactly how things were four years ago on a political basis, as the most important things to me when I was a freshman were not Obamas policy on free trade agreements or his stimulus packageinstead I was more focused on planning for my first high school dance. Although seniors may still have Advanced Placement tests, graduation arrangements, and prom to worry about, it is time that seniors begin taking note of the president they would like to see lead voting polls next November. At the very least, if the president I vote for is not elected, I will have taken part in something much more substantial than buying cigarettes or scratch cards.

As an alternative to typical school lunches, the Los Angeles Unified School District students has implemented a new menu consisting of exotic foods such as pad Thai and black bean burgers. However, this menu has been met with much criticism from the parents and the students alike. Even though the new menu provides a larger variety and was tested in order to prove it would be suitable for students, the new cuisine is still unpopular. Was this the right move for the LAUSD?

Pro: LAUSDs Lean Cuisine

Justin Park Asst. Editorial Editor Unsatisfied pupils are no strangers to the ambitious health departments of Californian school districts. With every attempt the districts make to bring well-being and satisfaction to their students, only unjustified infuriation and rejection seem to follow. When the LAUSD proposed and implemented its newest plan to add more healthy and unique cuisines to the school cafeterias, harsh criticism among the students was perhaps inevitable. However, the students must realize that the LAUSDs decision to upgrade its lunch menu was a sensible and strategic move that will only serve to improve the districts inefficient dining system. The new menu is easily the most groundbreaking solution the district has offered as a response to combat the increasing obesity in the state. Throughout the years, the health concern for children has clearly manifested itself time after time, especially in the recent statistics that claims only 31 percent of Californian students passed the statewide physical fitness test last year. It was evident that the district could no longer be tolerant of feeding its children calorific pizzas and nachosa drastic response to put a stop to the epidemic was more than necessary. The district, whose goal is not only to encourage good health but also to ensure the students will enjoy their meals, has generously allocated the time and money to concoct a lineup of exotic cuisines that would easily satisfy ones appetite. Instead

Con: LAUSDs Mean Cuisine

Lea Chang Feature Editor The introduction of the new cuisine in the LAUSD is an absolute waste of money. Students are not just giving the usual grumbles they used to about past school lunches, but are also actually throwing away the food that is being served without taking more than a few bites. If these students deem that the new menu is not palatable, then the district has truly blundered. The fact that the LAUSD ventured to spend money on oncampus dining at all is absurd, as those funds could have been put to much better use elsewhere. District budgets have undoubtedly taken a beating this past year, and for that reason, funds should be spent more carefullyon the education and wellbeing of students rather than on interesting food. When compared to other large, the LAUSD ranks almost dead last in academics according to the Los Angeles Daily News. Students in the district often complain about the run-down schools that, more often than not, are marked with graffiti. This kind of environment makes them feel unsafe and is distracting to the learning process. Clearly, issues such as school safety and technology should rank far higher than controversy over the lunch menu. Furthermore, drug safety at the LAUSD is poor when compared to that of other districts, and would have been a much more valuable investment. Although some may say that this new cuisine can raise cultural

of other cheaper alternatives, the LAUSD opted to cater to its students with delectable entres recognized worldwide for their taste. Although the extraction of fats and other unhealthy elements may noticeably alter the original flavor of these foods, their selections like pad Thai and Caribbean meatballs have been proven to serve as palatable meals to the students through a community taste testing. Out of 300,000 people, over 75 percent responded positively regarding the quality of the food items. The LAUSDs decision to invest in a revamped menu ultimately proves that the district is truly attentive to the students needs, as it strives to enrich its students gastronomic experience while maintaining a healthy balance. Although a considerable amount of students has

expressed their disappointment with the new menu, it is not the districts fault that students are so heavily accustomed to the traditional junk food. Many food items are reportedly being thrown away untouched, an indication that many closeminded students are refusing to even try the provided food. Students should instead learn to appreciate the districts effort by consuming the prepared menu with an open mentality. Despite the poor response, the LAUSD deserves much praise for structuring a much healthier route of child nutrition care. The LAUSDs experimental attempt to improve the school cafeteria meals should not be perceived as a failure, but a small step toward the districts success in nurturing healthy young students.

awareness, issues such as drug prevention and the condition of the schools themselves should obviously take precedence. This is not the time to be experimenting with what the mystery meat of the day should be. What the students of the LAUSD need is a proper learning environment. Common complaints regarding the new menu include that it does not match the already average quality of standard school lunch and that the food does not taste authentic. In fact, the quality of food is so terrible that many students claim to have headaches, stomach pains, and in some extreme cases, anemia. Furthermore, a black market for students has appeared on campus, providing instant noodles and other snacks for the high percentage of children that

simply cannot bear the nausea inducing meals. Apparently, when the district tested out the new menu, most of the students actually found the food appealing. Parents were also in favor of this change in lunchtime before their children started coming home either starving or sicks to their stomachs. However, the quality dipped dramatically when the cuisine was actually implemented tamales were burned and noodles were positively soggy. Luckily, the LAUSD seems to have recognized its mistake. It has announced that it will be taking away the worst of the menu, food such as the curries and beef jambalaya. Hopefully, the next time the district attempts to raise cultural awareness, it will be a bit wiser as to the method of doing so.

Trapped Translators
Laura Moffitt Feature Theme Editor During the war in Iraq, the United States relied on many Iraqi translators to communicate with prisoners and informants. These translators, who provided valuable assistance during war times, are now trapped in Iraq. Due to the immigration system America has created, many translators must wait years before being able to reside in America. During the extensive wait translators are suffering from death threats and attacks on their lives without any assistance from the country that they supported throughout the war. Such poor treatment is unacceptable due to the great risk the translators faced in order to provide necessary assistance to the U.S. A shocking 25,000 Iraqi translators were used throughout the war and are still currently awaiting security clearances in the U.S. During the prolonged delay during which they are awaiting final security clearances, they are suffering at the hands of their fellow countrymen. To other Iraqis, the translators are traitors to their country. Without protection from America, these translators and their families are at risk of torture and murder. Along with the countless translators who have suffered attacks, over a thousand have already been assassinated. It is cruel to trap these translators that have aided us. Without the assistance provided by translators, the U.S. army would have been unsuccessful in its efforts in Iraq. The efforts of one translator alone provided their squadron with the necessary translations to arrest nearly 80 of the top militia leaders in Iraq. Translators were essential to the war efforts because they allowed successful communication, which directly resulted in successful missions. It is indefensible to trivialize the efforts of translators when

they were key to our success during the war. Their ability to communicate with other Iraqis allowed our country to complete tasks and excel in missions that would have been impossible without the valuable information delivered by translators. It is vital to respect the translators not only because they must be assisted in return for their work, but also because the U.S. must keep in mind the reflection these actions have on America. In future wars, it is safe to assume individuals will be unwilling to translate for America because of the fear of betrayal after wartime has passed. We cannot ask people to support the U.S. armed forces when our country makes it clear that we will completely isolate them once they are no longer valuable to our efforts. If we cannot help the translators assimilate into their pre-war lifestyle, we will never be able to receive help in the future. In order to insure that translators will assist us in future wars, the U.S. must make it obvious to all individuals that we are able and willing to completely support those that assist us. The U.S. cannot detach itself from their allies as soon as they are no longer beneficial. This is not only cruel to people who have risked their lives to assist us, but also a poor representation of the U.S. Such perversion will ultimately lead to issues in future endeavors. We must make every possible attempt to support those who have provided assistance to us. By supporting these indispensable translators, we are able to create a clear foundation for assistance in future efforts. Furthermore, it shows that the U.S. is able to assist those who have been negatively impacted by the decisions of our country. The decisions made by the U.S. subsequent to end a war will leave impressions for years; in order to insure future assistance and to stand by those that have assisted us, we must help these translators immigrate to an area where they can live safely.

Foster the Kids

Colene Eng Asst. Editorial Editor The California legislation recently passed an act that would enable children in foster care to receive governmental support until they reach the age of 21. Right now, Californias $1.7 billion foster care system takes care of parentless children until the legal age of 18, and then emancipates them. Many are often released from foster care with meager possessions and are forced to settle independently without any guidance. To help the youth peacefully transition from the foster home to the working world, legislators passed Assembly Bill 12. With the economic recession still taking its toll on the nation, many foster kids are unable to find substantial jobs and may thus become homeless. By extending help to these unfortunate kids until they fully mature as independent adults, California can effectively reduce the massive number of homeless on the streets. According to a study recently conducted by Weekly, one-fourth of foster kids will be incarcerated, one-fifth will become homeless, one-third will suffer major depression,

and only two percent will ever graduate from college. By extending benefits until their 21st birthday, fostered youth will be able to continue their education, job training, or work without any financial pressure. AB12 aims to provide the youth the stability necessary to stay in school or work and therefore become productive members of society. With the current foster care system, the youth are not being adequately prepared for the brutal reality that awaits them for the rest of their lives once they hit the age of 18. The sudden emancipation from guided care does not suit many of the childrens wants or needs. Many formerly fostered youth are unequipped with experience and maturity that are necessary for their survival in the working world, where they do not have the constant guidance they are accustomed to. The kids cannot be expected to make such an abrupt transition. Essentially, by discharging the kids with nothing more than a perfunctory bid of farewell, the risk of the fostered youth becoming homeless becomes exponentially higher. Furthermore, cost analysis conducted by the Alliance for

Childrens Rights, a group advocating for foster youth, found that by passing AB12, California will actually save $50 million annually by replacing the state-funded foster care program which takes care of the youth until 18 with the federally funded AB12. A 2009 study found that every dollar invested in an individual under foster care over the age of 18 actually returned around $2.40 in increased productivity. Clearly, by investing more time and money into the fostered children, California would benefit greatly. This legislation is a pivotal step in preparing foster youth to succeed. AB12 offers these kids a modest amount of assistance that would prove to ultimately benefit the state. This small

investment will help endorse higher education for the fostered youth and therefore supplement wages at entry-level jobs. An act like AB12 has the potential to truly create better lives and put youth on the journey to selfsufficiency and prosperity. AB12 is definitely a valuable legislation. It offers the homeless youth something that they could never have dreamed about: a stable future. By extending assistance by just three years, foster kids will be able to benefit and produce a much more productive life. Both the Governor and Assembly members have passed a genuinely gainful legislationone that will undoubtedly yield a better future for many of Californias foster youth.

Internet Gets ******** By Government

Holly Liu Asst. News Editor Decades after the inception of cyberspace, nations around the world have finally taken the initiative to block certain useless aspects of the Internet. Some frustrating avid Internet users have shown their strong resistance against such a necessary action; however, the Internet needs to be censored to secure a promising future. Online usage has gotten out of hand considering all the pirating websites that people believe can be used for useless things such as socializing and entertainment. The Internet should be filtered out until all of those pesky things are completely gone. Luckily for Americans, the Stop Online Piracy Act has been introduced. However, this act does not guarantee the complete absence of personal opinion that the censorship in China offers, but it still limits the freedom of citizens for the welfare of the government and big-name companies. The act will rightfully allow copyright owners to have any of their own material taken off of any website, so the obnoxious Internet pirates who have been relying on freely-shared files could be instantly banished. This will strategically allow the big music making corporations to earn more money. People should not be penny pinching to save money over any Internet resource. These copyrighted and mass produced cyber material, though intangible, are worth every penny of peoples hardearned money. Internet users losing the ability to enjoy everyday entertainment will only be a small sacrifice for the overall amount of money that large companies will be able to retain. It is a foolproof theory: the government passes the act, governments sensible decision to censor aspects of the Internet considering that the Peoples Republic of China has already c r e a t e d t h e w o r l d s m o s t sophisticated system devoted to censoring the Internet. Chinas dedication to ensuring the safety of online browsing began when the government placed not just one, but over 60 Internet

companies earn more revenue, the government reaps more taxes from those companies, and the government uses that money to make America even better. It is a truly a win-win-win scenario. As long as the allmighty government and wealthy conglomerates are satisfied, who cares if the amount of access to the Internet will be lessened and Americans become deprived of free entertainment? H o w e v e r, i t i s t o o early to feel patriotic for the

regulations on its citizens. Under these rules, the government had been freely deleting any defaming comments that will only damage their perfect reputation and fool the surfers by the slanderous lies, thus creating a peaceful utopia for its citizens. America must follow in the footsteps of such an exemplary government, in order to create an ideal world for our citizens as well. Numerous pesky websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube have been rightfully

blocked to protect the people of China from being distracted by foreign influence. Websites such as Facebook are truly a bother, allowing people to actually waste time socializing with other people wherever they go. With the power that the Stop Online Piracy Act gives to companies, the satisfied people of the United States will soon demand more censorship of higher degree and ultimately see similarly irritating websites taken down as well. Such an ideally censored nation will have to resort to heavy consequences for those who dare to rebel. China has even fined and arrested those bold individuals who posed threats to the social stability of the Internet, a truly excellent example of consequence. With these completely effective methods, the Internet in China is completely secure while the Internet can still be an information highwayjust without the unnecessary information. With this recent act being considered, a beginning of a new reformation of the United States corrupted Internet seems imminent. Even though China may have the upper hand right now, the U.S. will surely come through with a stronger system of censorshipthe Stop Online Piracy Act is merely just the beginning. Sooner or later, the world will see a better future with the absence of nonsensical cyber material.

A website structured to provide the most trustworthy and accurate health information, WebMD seems to cater to many internet users nowadays as a substantial substitute for actual doctor visits. Forgive me if I sound too pompous, but I definitely consider myself an extremely busy individual who just cant afford to take a trip to the hospital every time I am struck with an unidentiable illness. So when I fell ill one day, I decided to check this site out and become the judge of its validity. My symptoms werent unusual to me. I was nauseated, exhausted, and overwhelmed by a nagging desire to skip school for the day. Before accessing WebMD, I decided to follow my usual protocol; I asked my Mom. Based on the fact that I pulled a strenuous all-nighter the night before, my Mom diagnosed me with a temporary headache caused by sleep deprivation, easily treated with a dose of Advil and a good nap.

Christine Song Business Manager This is the end. Looking back, it took a really long time to get here. I stepped into high school, an Ashley Wilkes in my own right. I left middle school, a jaded and cynical soldier from the wars fought, and haunted by the gold-tinted memories of better days, I looked forward to the best four years of my life. I spent days and years waiting for the magical moments of high school to nd mebut how could it have found me when I was lost in a mental Disneyland, unwilling to be found? And yet, I expected nothing short of the best, for previously, I had always achieved the best without effort or question. Cocky and seemingly invincible, I stormed these halls and sat in classes with a cocked eyebrow and an amused smile itting across my face. And behind that mask, I danced in a spot of sunlight, with beautiful silver bullets of rain pouring down on me from enchanting stormy grey skies. I am not proud to be able to say that my ending was not as pathetic as that of Mr. Wilkes. I nally realized, almost too late, that what is gone will never come back. I returned from my wanderings down certain halfdeserted streets for indeed, there will not always be time to wonder, Do I dare? But I will tell you this, my fellow Prince Hamlets and poor slaves of the American Dream. Do not fall victim to complacency and do not flatter yourselves with the poisonous pathetic proclamations of I deserve, I deserve. Pity is reserved for the helpless and speechless, not the able-bodied and minded. Do not be afraid of trying, and do not be afraid to start over. And remember; only your world revolves around you. For no one realized that the lake did not cry salty tears of sorrow for Narcissus, but for the lost opportunity to contemplate its own beauty in Narcissus eyes. I depart from this purple and gold gilded cage soon. It holds no beauty for me and I will not miss it. Nevertheless, I will look back at it, not with bitterness, but rather, with a smile. I accept that I made many mistakes here and the lessons learned will hold with me for the rest of my life. Thank you to those that inspired me during these four years. Thank you to all my brilliant English teachers (including Mr. Roubian) for teaching me how to think. Also, thank you to orange snack, box car, space shuttle, bell jar, chipmunk, ron stoppable, and genius viola troll for the laughs and true friendships. Oh and of course, to business girl, your motivation and dedication is truly inspiring. Good luck next year; knowing you, youre not going to need it. Fine. I suppose I should mention Ongpoy, the love of my life who made my existence somewhat bearable. And I probably should mention PKIM; forever two pounds and two ngers. High school is done with and I survived. Im looking forward to the future and I will make the most of it. Its true, you know. What doesnt kill you will make you stronger.

Downtown Brea has recently received a new addition to its motley group of culinary treats. Farrells Ice Cream Parlour specializes in ice cream and its selling point is its quaint 1960s feel. Its huge line, however, leads potential customers to question whether the wait time is really worth it.

Farrells ice cream is the ice cream equivalent of Disneyland with its amazing, bubbly atmosphere. Customers are easily swept up by the upbeat personas of the restaurants waiters and waitresses. There is a constant bout of singing and cheering as the employees help customers celebrate special events. Patrons can also request specially made balloon animals which vary from a giant giraffe hat to a sh on a shing rod. The atmosphere of the parlour is singular in its animated and cheerful vibe. There is never a dull moment in the restaurant as you can easily count on a parade of singing waitresses and waiters to march across the room every few minutes to sing a birthday song to some special birthday boy or girl. The menu includes sandwiches, pizzas, and burgers, but its ice cream is what really steals the spotlight. The sundaes are smooth and include a plethora of toppings such as fruit, chocolate, whipped cream, and more. The sundaes are the perfect serving size to share on a date, while its ice cream oats and sodas are ideal for one person to slurp down all by himself or hereself. Large groups can share a Belly Buster, a monstrous ice cream concoction of enormous size. A truly spectacular treat for up to ten people is the infamous, notorious Farrells Zoo. Its so gigantic that two servers have to lug it out of the kitchen on a platform. FoodNetwork.com made this dish famous when it named Farrells Zoo the third most decadent dessert.

Unveiled

A Fantasy

Until recently, the idea of an invisibility cloak has only been possible in science fiction novels. Now, with the ever-increasing technological advances, scientists have invented different mechanisms that can almost make ones body vanish completely from sight. The NanoTech Institution of the University of Texas in 2011 invented the carbon nanotube, an invisibility cloaking using a nanotube and heat from electrical stimulation. The sharp difference between the temperatures of the heated carbon nanotube and the surrounding environment causes light to bend away from the object, making the material seem invisible. But, this is only possible under a Petri dish, meaning it could not work for items more than a couple centimeters long. Something more suitable for humans is the camouage cloak, designed by scientists from the University of Tokyo. By projecting the image of the wearers background from one perspective onto his body, he is able to camouage with the environment naturally. The downside, however, is that a throng of videographers must also accompany the person and the effect would only fool one person standing at the correct angle. A similar concept was portrayed in the recently released

film, Mission Impossible: the Ghost Protocol. The gadget successfully deceived the security for a short time, until more security guards arrived and the screen crashed from failure to display images from multiple angles. One of the most successful types of invisibility devices is the Photo Veil a military-style camouflage. Similar to the cloak mentioned above, the Photo Veil is a covering that blends in with surroundings. The only difference is that it is specially designed for soldiers and vehicles on the battleeld. Photo Veil collects digital photos from cameras on a drone, a radio-controlled airplane or boat, LIDAR (an optical remote sensing technology that measures distance using laser), and satellite. The device produces an almost identical, highresolution, site-specic copy of the surrounding area, which then displays on the exteriors of the vehicle, concealing the military transportation underneath. Because it obscures the soldiers and vehicles effectively, Photo Veil is becoming an increasingly popular and valuable tool used in battles. Although presently there is no such thing as a veil that will make something magically vanish from thin air, considering how fast technology is progressing today, there is no doubt scientists will create an invention almost equivalent to it in the near future.

Looking Back at Sports in 2011

Austin Kong A&E Editor The year of 2011 was full of major sporting events. From uncertain lockouts to glorious comebacks, the sports world captivated its audience and marked 2011 as an exciting year for sports. Prior to the beginning of their seasons, both the National Football League and the National Basketball Association experienced lockouts that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The major issue that transpired during both of the lockouts was the controversy and debate over the players salaries. The NBA owners wanted to change the leagues system in salaries because they believed that the players were getting paid too much while franchise owners were losing money. In turn, players thought that the new system was unfair and opposed the change. The situation during the NFL lockout was similar to that of the NBA, but the problem lied more heavily on investments made by franchise owners. Prior to the lockout, NFL players had a set percentage of revenue that was given to players in the form of a salary, but because of the new investments that the owners had made for the palyers, they wanted to decrease the percentage of the revenue for players. Fortunately after 132 days, the players and the owners of the NFL came to an agreement that ended the lockout just in time for the season. The NBA lockout ended towards the end of November after 149 days, and as a result, the 2011-2012 NBA season was shortened from 82 games to 66. In the 2011 Major League Baseball World Series, the St. Louis Cardinals took home the championship after fighting off the Texas Rangers in a nail biting seven game series. David Freese of the Cardinals was given the Most Valuable Player award while Albert Pujols tied a record by hitting three home runs in one game, a feat that had only been accomplished my Reggie Jackson and Babe Ruth. During the NBA Finals, the Dallas Mavericks and Dirk Nowitztki faced off against the Big Three of the Miami Heat in a hyped rematch of the 2006 NBA Finals where the Heat emerged as the victors. However, this year, the Mavericks stunned the world by taking the championship after a six game series after a stunning performance by Nowiztki. Hitting game winners in games three and five while leading the Mavericks to a 15 point comeback, Nowitzki cemented his legacy in NBA history. He, in turn, was given the Finals MVP. Super Bowl XLV featured two titans, the Green Bay Packers, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. With a final score of 35-21, Green Bay was able to pull away with the victor naming their quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, as the Super Bowl MVP. 2011 also featured the Fdration Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Womens World Cup. Although they lost to Japans team in the finals, the United Statess team put on a spectacular performance for the world. The team included former Diamond Bar High School student Alex Morgan, who scored the gamedeciding goal in the semifinals against France and another goal in the finals. After an exciting season of sports, much is expected for the next year. After record breaking performances made by athletes and teams in 2011, audiences cannot wait to see what they will do next.

Lady Brahmas Challenge League Leaders

Colene Eng Asst. Editorial Editor Although the Lady Brahmas put up a good fight agaisnt the Bonita Bearcats on Friday, January 20, the Hacienda League leading Bearcats managed to pull away with a win of 41-28. Making three consecutive baskets, the Bearcats started off the game with a strong lead. However, the starting center, junior Yewande Alabi, put the Lady Brahmas on the scoreboard with a bucket. With Alabis basket, the team gained confidence and sunk two threepointers from senior co-captain Katie Jagodka and sophomore Natalie Wong. By the end of the first quarter, the Brahmas were still trailing by two, but started the second quarter knowing the game was in reach. Going into the final quarter, the Brahmas were behind 2722. Although senior Jazmin Trinh made up some ground with one of her two free throw shots, it was not enough to defeat Bonita. We came into the game knowing that Bonita would be a hard team to beat. We put in all of our effort, but we werent able to overcome them, said sophomore Norah Wu, who contributed two points and one assist. Leaders in the game included senior captain Jasmine Nguyen with six rebounds, Trinh with nine rebounds, and five points, and Alabi, who ended with 12 rebounds, and eight points. All in all, we had great defense throughout the whole game. Usually, Bonita averages 65 points a game, but we managed to hold them back to 41 points. We need to focus on our upcoming games and make sure that our girls get enough rest. As long as we prepare well, whatever happens will happen, commented head coach Tony McCabe. This will not be the last Brahma versus Bearcat showdown this season. All teams will face each other again in the upcoming month. Diamond Bars next game will be today, an away game against West Covina High School.

main offensive half and stopper, but his versatility allows the team to place him under any position on the field. Soccer is easily one of Boelmans main hobbies, but is certainly not the biggest. Defying the norm of typical teenage hobbyists, Boelman is a certified junior drag racer who has already made headlines in local newspapers for his extraordinary talent in racing. Hailed the 2010 Track Champion of Barona Dragstrip Series, Boelman has invested his weekends at local speedways to polish his driving skills, ever since he was 13 years old. You need to be quick [and] have a really good perspective as to where you are on your track. Its definitely a lot more complicated than many people think, shared Boelman. It is clear where his respected reputation comes from; Boelmans active involvement with the art of drag racing translates into pure inspiration to all. In addition to his extracurricular achievements, Boelmans academic

Who Owns Los Angeles?

Winston Cho Asst. Sports Editor The Lakers have become the most successful franchise in National Basketball Association history since moving to the great city of Los Angeles in 1960. Led by NBA legends Kobe Bryant, Wilt Chamberlain, K a r e e m Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille ONeal, and Jerry West, the Lakers have amassed a league leading 16 NBA championships. With a strong core of Bryant, Andrew Bynum, and Pau Gasol, the Lakers are poised to add a seventeenth title to its collection. However, with the addition of Chris Paul during the offseason and the development of the human highlight-reel Blake Griffin, the Clippers are looking to dethrone the Lakers as the kings of Los Angeles. The 2010-2011 NBA playoffs ended disappointingly for the Lakers as they were swept by the Dallas Mavericks. In contrast, the Clippers, failed to make the playoffs at all with a 32-50 season. However, Griffin was the talk of the NBA all season as he defied all odds with his rimrattling dunks. He was chosen as an all-star, a rare honor for a rookie, and went on to win the dunk contest and the Rookie of the Year Award. He finished the season with 22 points and 12 rebounds per game, the highest numbers of any rookie since Tim Duncan in 1997. During t h e offseason, the Lakers made a trade for Chris Paul who is considered the best point guard in the league. David Stern then vetoed the trade, an unprecedented act for the commissioner of the NBA. A few days later, Paul was sent to the Clippers on Sterns approval attracting the ire and fury of Laker fans everywhere. In a matter of hours, the Clippers went from a lottery team to a title contender. Suddenly, people were calling Los Angeles, Clipper territory. This begs the question, do the Lakers or the Clippers now own Los Angeles. The 2011-2012 lockout shortened season has been full of excitement and shocking events. The Lakers are 10-5 after defeating the defending NBA champions, Dallas Mavericks, while the Clippers are 7-4 after its loss to the Utah Jazz. Additionally, the Clippers have beaten the Lakers on all three occasions they have met. Yet, as of now, the Lakers are the better and more complete team. The Clippers have been posting incredible offensive numbers due to their up-anddown style of play, but they lack a half-court offense. In the playoffs, the tempo of the game slows down and teams have to rely on their half-court offense more often. The Clippers have been known to struggle in this set due to their lack of a post presence. However, its biggest problem is their atrocious defense. It ranks in the bottom third of every defensive category in the league. Defense not offense has been known to win championships. In turn, the Lakers are the fifth best defensive team in the league allowing just 89.4 points per game. Although their offense has been known to be stagnant, it will improve as they better adjust to the new offense. The city of Los Angeles belongs to the most successful team. The Clippers will dethrone the Lakers only if they win a championship. However, unless drastic improvements are made, expect to see the Lakers on top of the mountain for years to come.

Justin Park Asst. Editorial Editor As an all-around soccer star on the field and a recognized drag racer on the tracks, senior Gunnar Boelman embodies the perfect definition of admirable. Underneath his masculine exterior topped with a robust presence, Boelman is a friendly student athlete who not only makes a strong impression among his peers, but presents himself with modesty despite his exceptional accomplishments. As a child, Boelman enjoyed playing baseball until he realized that a fast-paced sport would be more suitable for his ability. At the age of nine, he ventured into playing soccer as the goalkeeper of his local American Youth Soccer Organization league. Boelman continued to develop his athleticism in high school by joining the Diamond Bar High School junior varsity soccer and football teams his freshman year. After two years of playing both incredibly demanding sports, Boelmans penchant for soccer ultimately allowed him to choose it over football. I like playing soccer, just because it clears my mind. Soccer provides me a getaway from school, commented Boelman. He is currently in his second year on the varsity squad as the

accomplishments are quite noteworthy. Despite the heavy time commitment both of his activities require, Boelman maintained his high grade point average of 3.86 and endured challenging courses like Advanced Placement Calculus. Its a lot of time management. You have to really prioritize and put things aside that may be arent as important as school work, commented Boelman. Although soccer and drag racing are where his passion resides, Boelman wishes to pursue dentistry in the future. With an acceptance letter from Cal State Fullerton already in hand, Boelman hopes to mature as a successful dentist by attending his dream school University of California, Los Angeles, where he could enjoy recreational soccer along with his studies. Regardless of what lays ahead in his future, Boelman has truly outdone himself as a phenomenal student during his four years of high school.

The city of Los Angeles belongs to the most successful team. The Clippers will dethrone the Lakers only if they win a championship.
