Unit operation Harvesting

Threshing

Drying

Current practices - Colour of panicles - Labour availability - Availability of equipment - Dryness of grains (by biting) - Soil conditions - Sickle / machettes - Knives - Combines - Availability of drying and gathering surfaces - Heaping after cutting panicles - Manual threshing (various) - Tractors driven over paddy - Animal driven implements - Pedal (Non-motorised mechanical) threshers - Motorized threshers - Combines - Thresher-winnowers - Sun drying - Patio drying - Mechanical drying - Barn drying - Solar drying

Recommended technologies - Number of days after planting - Grain moisture content - Uniformity of panicle colour - Number of days after field draining - Mini combines - Reaper - Plant pools (custom hire systems) - Thresh immediately after harvest Appropriately scaled - Pedal (Non-motorised mechanical) threshers - Motorized threshers - Combines - Thresher-winnowers

Periodic turning and monitoring of MC of the paddy for the following: - Sun drying on elevated surfaces - Patio drying with cover - Appropriate mechanical drying - Barn drying - Solar drying Mini combines Appropriately scaled mechanical winnowers and destoners Hermetic bags and cocoons Well managed storage rooms / warehouses Appropriate non-hermetic bags Appropriate silos

The work plans remain the same as agreed after the regional launch of the CIDA project in June. However, due to the directive by CIDA that field activities should not begin until the Project Implementation Plan has been approved, the calendar of activities has been thrown out of gear. Now that the PIP has been approved by CIDA, there is an urgent need for work schedules to be updated through consultation among in-country partners. The national project coordinators will be mandated to carry out field activities when AfricaRice finalizes the survey questionnaires in the very near future.
