(Civil Engineering) Time: 3 hours Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks *****
1. (a) (b) Draw the stress-strain curve for mild steel and explain the salient points. A reinforced concrete column 500 mm x 500 mm in section is reinforced with 4 steel bars of 25 mm diameter one in each corner. The column is carrying a load of 200 kN. Find the 5 2 5 2 stresses in the concrete and steel bars. E steel =2.1 x 10 N/mm E concrete = 0.14 x 10 N/mm . Derive the expression for strain energy stored in a body. A weight of 2 kN is dropped onto a collar at the lower end of a vertical bar 3 m long and 28 mm in diameter. Calculate the height of drop. If the max. Instantaneous stress is not to 2 5 2 exceed 120 N/mm . What is the corresponding elongation? Take E= 2 x 10 N/mm . Derive relation between shear force, bending moment and rate of loading at a section of a beam. A beam AB 10 m long has supports at its ends A and B. It carries a point load of 5 kN at 3 metres from A and a point load of 5 kN at 7 metres from A and a udl load of 1 kN per metre between two point loads. Draw SF and BM diagrams for the beam. Derive the bending equation and write about assumptions in the theory of pure bending. Find the width and depth of the strongest beam that can be cutout of a cylindrical log of wood whose diameter is 50 cms? Explain about shear stress distribution of an I section. A beam of span L mts simply supported by the ends, carries a central load w. The beam section has an overall depth of 29 cms with horizontal flanges each 15 cm x 2 cm and a 2 vertical web 25 cm x 1 cm. If the maximum shear stress is to be 450 kg/cm , when the 2 maximum bending stress is 1500 kg/cm , calculate the value of the centrally applied point load W and the span L. Derive the expression for deflection in moment-area method. Determine the slope and deflection at the free end and at the point C. 2 m from the fixed 8 4 5 2 end A for the beam AB as shown in figure 1. I= 2 x 10 mm E=2 x 10 N/mm . 5 kN C 10 kN D 2m 6m 10 kN B

Derive the expression for longitudinal and circumferential stresses in thin cylinder. A cylindrical thin drum 8 cm in dia and 3 m long has a shall thickness of 1 cm. If the drum is 2 subjected to an internal pressure of 25 kg/cm , determine (i) Change in diameter. (ii) Change in length. 6 2 (iii) Change in volume, Take E= 2 x 10 kg/cm . Poissons ratio (1/m) =1/4. Explain about compound cylinders. The maximum stress permitted in a thick cylinder of internal and external radii 20 cm and 30 2 2 cm respectively is 15.5 N/mm . If the external pressure is 4 N/mm , find the internal pressure that can be applied. Plot the curves showing the variations of hoop and radial stresses 5 through the material. What will be the change in thickness of the cylinder? E= 2.1 x 10 2 N/mm , 1/m= 0.3.
