UCSD Circle K

Hey Hey Hey UCSD Circle K!

My name is Jonathan Cao-Nguyen and I will be serving you as your 2012-2013 District Governor, but please just call me J-Cao. A little about myself: I am a 3rd year at UC San Diego where I am majoring in Human Development with a minor in Biology. I love everything Disney so that includes the TV channel, the movies, the merchandise, and most importantly, the theme parks! Ive been a 5 year Annual Passport holder and I dont think I will lose that record anytime soon. My favorite color is Blue and Im a huge foodie! Whenever I try something new in terms of food, Im the type of person who would take a picture of the food and then rank it to my preference. Its pretty awesome to see all of my journal entries on all the foods that Ive eaten at restaurants. Im also a decent cook and I watch Food Network religiously! Lastly, my most favorite thing to do is to hang out with my friends and meet new awesome people (which could be you!). Anyways, Ive had the great opportunity to watch first hand on all the successes that youve accomplished this past year as a club. With that said, it means that for the upcoming year, you should continue challenging ourselves to do even better and continue pushing your members to continue embodying the three tenets of Circle K: Service, Leadership, and Fellowship. For those of you who are new to the club, you will have a wonderful experience in Circle K! Just keep an open mind and be willing to try new thing. You get the most from this organization from what you put into this organization. Finally, the school year is about to end so I wish you the best of luck with final exams and assignments. I hope to see you all around and dont ever hesitate to say hi when you see me! A fair warning, I love to give hugs even if you dont want one. Keep updated with all the District events that we have coming up for you because they will surely be AMAZING, so you dont want to miss it. Till then! :D

UCSD Circle K

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR S WORDS

UCSD Circle K is one of the many clubs of the Paradise Division of the California - Nevada - Hawaii District. The Paradise Division covers the greater area of San Diego, and Hawaii! The other schools of the Paradise Division are SDSU, CSU San Marcos, Hawaii Pacific University, UH - Hilo, UH - Manoa, and Grossmont College. Dear UCSD Circle K Members! For those of you who don't know me, my name is Azhar Deen, but people tend to call me Deen ! I love penguins and giraffes and I have a crazy obsession with juice. My favorite colors are are purple, teal, yellow, and burgundy! I love biking, eating, dancing, music, taking pictures and editing photos. But most of all I love Circle K! I love the Kiwanis Family! I have been part of the Kiwanis Family for quite a couple of years now, back in Key Club when I was part of the rocking Division 34 South Penguins up in norcal! I came to UCSD and decided to continue with the Kiwanis Family by joining the amazing UCSD Circle K. And last year, I had the immense honor of being a part of the 2011-2012 Bombass Board serving as the Kiwanis Family Chair. But I still haven't had enough! It's been nearly a month since I took the office of the Paradise Lieutenant Governor, and to be honest, I am just a huge bag of multiple feelings. I'm still in a little bit of shock that I am the Lieutenant Governor, and office once held by some of the most inspiring individuals: Alan Nam, Cami Tam, and David Rozul. Each were exceptional leaders, and to be placed besides them is such an honor. That being said, I believe the feeling that describes me best is that I am excited! Paradise is hitting new ground and we're growing very rapidly. Things are a -changing and it is most definitely going to be a crazy ride! To the UCSD 2012 -2013 Board, you guys are going to be amazing. People may say things, but you guys will fall into your roles, and you will do it beautifully. Vivian and Skylar are going to lead this club to amazing new heights and I can't wait for all of the accomplishments. To the UCSD Circle K Club, keep being amazing. You make this club what it is. Keep doing service, and keep being excited! The dynamic and energy of UCSD Circle K is something that the rest of the district is envious of. Your hard work is the source of that, so keep at it! Work harder and make this club hit new levels! Also, definitely check out the rest of this newsletter. It's a standing testament to the amazingness of this club, a club that holds a very special place in my heart. Viet has worked extremely hard to make it a success and you can check out all of his hard work! Azhar Deen , Paradise Lieutenant Governor

PRESIDENT S LETTER

For those of you who dont know me yet, my name is Vivian Nguyen and I am your incoming club president! It is truly an honor to be serving UCSD Circle K because this organization is nothing short of amazing! My term officially started at the beginning of Spring Quarter, and even now, I havent fully overcome the overwhelming excitement. Even more so, I cannot wait to see the publication of this first newsletter, created by none other than your Public Relations Chair, Viet Tran! As you continue to read the articles in this newsletter, you will start to realize that our club has done A LOT. I am so incredibly proud of this club after attending District Convention (DCON) 2011 and witnessing UCSD Circle K receive so many awards. We even won FIRST PLACE TOTAL ACHIEVEMENT! This award entitles us as the best club in every aspect, ranging from attending district events for California-Nevada-Hawaii, to having the most service hours of nearly 11,500, and also raising the most funds for our District Fundraising Initiatives, such as Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). The achievements that we have accomplished would not have been possible without the efforts of each and every member and even more so, the hard work, dedication, and planning efforts from our board members. I would like to thank the members of BOMBASS Board for working so hard all the time and being inspirational and just all around amazing. In addition, I would also like to congratulate 2012-2013 ORGANIZATION XV for all you have accomplished thus far, and prepare yourselves for your term because its about to get CRAY CRAY! I think thats enough from me for this newsletter! Please take the time to read what your fellow members have written about their favorite projects and events and dont forget to tell Viet how awesome it is afterwards! ENJOY!~ Love always, Vivian Nguyen, UCSD Circle K Club President

DISTRICT ENCRYPTION: Dcon 2012

District Convention 2012: The perfect way to end a year full of amazing service events, sizzling socials, hella bankin' fundraisers, and crazy fun memories. On March 23rd, Thirty-three UCSD Circle Kers left right after their finals to meet at the Marriott hotel of Woodland Hills, CA. They would soon embark on an exTRONdinary adventure attending workshops, receiving awards, and meeting new people all across California, Hawaii, and Nevada. This year's DCON was definitely one of the most memorable DCONs for me. Arriving on Friday night, we started off with the opening ceremony where we cheered our hearts out representing UCSD with our face paint and purple headbands. We weren't the largest club there but we were definitely one of the loudest. After the opening ceremony, we went to the Paradise Oasis caucus room where we got to hear the potential district candidates give their speeches. We also got to see two awesome people represent our club; J-Cao running for District Governor and Deen running for Paradise Lieutenant Governor. After the long caucus, we were dismissed to go clean up and go to bed since we have to wake up early in the morning the next day. But being our rebellious selves, some of us met up in one hotel room and decided to tell scary stories for several more hours. Despite the lack of sleep the next day, it was definitely worth it. Especially for Athena's scary stories. Saturday was full of caucus and workshops all day, and then the awards ceremony at night. Both J-Cao and Deen won for their positions and now we have two district board members on D-Board WOOO! (And Stef too but that comes later on ;))What really made my night was that everyone on E-board got the distinguished award. So proud of you all :). After the awards ceremony, we watched the talent act and then it was the dance, TRON themed too! It was really fun but the best part was having our year reflection early in the morning with the whole club gathered in the hallway. Everyone was very emotional and talked about what they really felt about the club. It made me realize that I am definitely going to miss everyone although it's rumored that I don't have a heart. The next morning, we all packed up, and went downstairs for breakfast and the last announcements for DCON. What really made my weekend was that UCSD Circle K won 1st place Overall Total Achievement. This is the greatest award given out that weekend to the top school in the district and that just shows that our hard work has paid off. I am sooo thankful for all of the amazing board members I got to work with this year and all of the members of UCSD Circle K; we definitely couldn't have done it without you <3 Vivian Kha 9

District encryption:
From the Desk of the STC South Chair by STEFANIE CHOW Spring Training Conference (STC) South was undoubtedly an exciting and motivating (not to mention minion-ful) kick-off to the new Circle K year! A record-breaking 450+ Circle Kers and Kiwanians gathered at Orange Coast College on Sunday, May 6th, 2012 to build leadership skills, network with other members, and support their divisions and District. The sunny weather and positive attitudes definitely contributed to how much information was absorbed in just one day! After reading through all the evaluation forms, I was proud knowing that members enjoyed the wide variety of workshops/panels and the knowledge that each host or panelist had to share. From learning about committees to learning how to plan a roadtrip, there was something for everyone at this District event! Of course, none of this would have been possible without the help of all my workshop/panel hosts, volunteers, and special helpers. Next to Orange Coast College, I believe that UC San Diego Circle K played the next most important role in making STC South a success! Sojeong Moon and Steven Nguyen were my dynamic duo in drawing the Despicable Me characters displayed ALL over the event, from the program to the room signs. Everyone loved how much the event matched the theme, and those two were the main reason why we had so many great images to show off! As for workshop and panel hosts, Roger Pan, Candace Chu, Kristine Le, Steven Nguyen, and Darren Syu were among the HIGHEST-RATED workshops and panels out of the fifty offered at STC South. Thank you SO much for all your hard work! (Special thanks to Roger Pan and Vivian Nguyen for being Large Club panelists!) And of course, without the amazing vocal talents of Darren Syu, Steven Nguyen, Vivian Li, and Grace Lee, I would not have been able to put together such an effective promotional video! (Wow, Steven Nguyen was mentioned a LOT in that paragraph) And lastly, I really appreciate everyone who attended the event and showed their support to our Paradise Division and the CNH District. I hope you learned much from STC South and took back that information to share with others. For those who could not make it, there are still many District events in the future, so look forward to them. With all this experience and knowledge Spring Traning Conference by VI NGUYEN

UCSD Circle K

I generally find training conferences to be interesting. You get to go to a whole new campus and meet plenty of awesome Circle Kers from different schools and learn so much. I knew this STC would not disappoint because our very own Stefanie chow planned it. I attended five workshops. The first workshop was about networking and well, it pretty was very heart warming. My favorite part was when Sean talked about how he randomly met a senior in Nor-cal and how he was in Circle K! The best part was he said he still kept in contact with his college Circle K friends! :) Then I attended Kristine and Stevens How to Keep Club Memories. Historians do alot for our club, but after this workshop I learn that there was so much more that they do then meets the eye. YAY! Good job Kristine and Steven! Improve was another memorable workshop. I was highly entertained watching Circle K members act out random scenarios! I was also super awesome seeing Deen unveil the new Divisional Board. Many more of our club members facilitated workshops or were on panel! Good Job Stefanie Chow for planning this event!

UCSD Circle K

Relay 4 Life 2012 by KAT TRUONG Despite weather conditions and changing schedules, UCSD Circle K decided to stick it out and stay at the event from beginning to end. I was there the entire time and helped with the set-up and figuring out how to pitch the tent, which I think we all did brilliant on considering some of us had never pitched any tent before, and this tent was one of the more strange ones to put together because of the awkward shape. Putting it away, too, was something else (thank goodness for Deen, or we would have never gotten it to fit back into its bag!). Clean up was much harder than set up because its always easier to take something out of a bag than to put it back in, especially if its damp and soggy, and if your fingers are all stiff from the cold.

For set up and clean up, we can never forget the drivers. The time, the effort, and the money that drivers put into the club is always underrated. Thanks David Mei fro coming to pick up chairs from my place, and Stephanie Syu for taking them back. We had Quidditch hoops to bring around and Viet was willing to drive with them sticking out of his car like a foot and a half out the rear window, the hoops circling him around the drivers seat! And also speaking of Viet driving, when we found out that Relay was going to stay through the night, he drove four of us around campus to pick up stuff, and none of us went to the same colleges so he literally had to drive in a big circle to drop us all off, and then another big circle to pick us all up again. What a trooper, this team captain of ours! I loved selling the hot cocoa this year. I didnt do much except get water, but our club was amazing. Everything from Claires announcement, in which I wasnt expecting so when her voice blasted from the speakers I was so surprised, to the moment we ran out of cups. Talking to the runners and walkers that went by, soliciting them into donating, all of that. So many of them called out to us, saying Thanks Circle K! and everything, and it really warmed my heart. And we raised quite a bit of money in the process! One awesome display of teamwork, and it was somewhat of a challenge, but turned out to be pretty fun, was moving our whole setup sometime in the evening so that wed be closer to the electrical outlets, so that wed have power. And it worked, and we had light!

Assignment: eliminate cancer

Dorothy Huynh was absolutely darling during Relay. She brought food, let us borrow her blankets even though she wasnt staying, brought card games. She came in the middle of the night to give Viet a sandwich because she knew that he had stayed on the track all day and didnt eat very much. It wasnt just Dorothy, though who left blankets and snacks at there even though they didnt stay for long. And there were several people who had things happening during the day but came back two, three, four times throughout the day to support our club!

Volume XXII Issue 1

UCSD Circle K

Luminaria was something else. We got a bag for all of us, and its always a surprising amount of people who have someone to dedicate in honor or in memory. I dont think enough of us knew about the bag though. Right after the slideshow we all got into a giant group hug in the middle of the field and kind of just let everything out. Its at times like these that just shows the way our club cares, without needing to use words. Individual hugs, too, all around. And we walked around the track, And Vivian Li was holding my arm, and I could see others linking arms and leaning on shoulders, and honestly, it was beautiful. This year's Relay meant a lot to me for personal reasons and I couldn't have been with better people. There are so many other things that I could say that were simple small delights throughout the day: doing rolls and cartwheels with Sarah Woo and Athena Zeng and everyone, attempting the jumping picture under the balloon arch, seeing Jason Seto and David Mei running around the track at an incredible pace, pretending that walking around the track was actual exercise, meeting new people and talking with old friends who arent in the club but were there, the simple fact that we reached the fundraising goal. Let's have another successful Relay next year!

Program: reality changers

Reality Changers is a program that helps students with disadvantaged background become first generation college students. They help tutor students from 8th grade to 12th grade. They have an amazing statistic which is that ALL of the students in their program go to a 4 year college after high school. At the beginning of this quarter, I went to Reality Changers for the first time to check it out. After going there a couple times and getting use to flow of it, I enjoy going there every week because I get a chance to help students and get to know them. Also, everyone gets to eat homemade dinner that the students families made and it is DELICIOUS! Everyone should check out Reality Changers because you guys can make a huge difference in these student lives. They have homework in various subjects and even if you are not particularly good at any subject (like me) you can work together with the student and try to solve the problem together. -TINA NGUYEN

Project: EARTH DAY WITH WILD COAST

e pik +

UCSD Circle K

Earth Day by VIET TRAN Earth Day was filled with surprises. It was the first of many. It was the first time that UCSD would be working with WiLD COAST, an international environmental organization dedicated to wildlife preservation and ecofriendly awareness. It was the first time that I had ever known that it takes 460 years for a plastic bottle to decompose at the bottom of an ocean. It was the first time I had ever seen a friend I knew (Ruth and Alejandro) wear a human sized turtle costume. And it was also the first time UCSD Circle K successfully and finally did service alongside the social fraternity of Pi Kappa Alpha. I have immense conviction that great bonds are being formed between two polar organizations!

Blood (boiling), sweat (dripping), tears (of joy). Three words to describe the epic battle that was held on April 8th. What began as a mere friendly social hosted by the Sour Heart Bandits became so much more once we received our masks and our guns. Between an old western town and a battlefield with a plethora of bunkers, those who were new to this form of combat quickly learned the art of combat! Playing a brutal 6 games we got to burn through our bags of paintballs while imagining even for a moment that we were fierce soldiers on the battlefields of paint. With half the group having never gone paintballing before it was a generally fun experience and with the immense number of Groupons left to be used Im sure we shall see more exciting opportunities to shoot each other with paintballs (of love!)

UCSD Circle K

As a Family Head of probably the best family in UCSD CKI, The Chocobo Riders, I organized and planned a Family Picnic. Unfortunately the weather did not go as the way I wanted, but that did not stop me and my family members to come out and enjoy each others company. We drove over to the street where we would get the sandwich bags that I made for everyone and we walked over to the cliffs. There we enjoyed the view of the ocean ate our sandwiches and our Kool-Aid Jammers and also took pictures here and there. It was an experience that brought the family together. TARGET: DAVID TRUONG

The Truong Persona by VIET TRAN You can usually find him riding his fixie bike. You can usually find him repping his family the Chocobo Riders. You can also find him cruising in his white Toyota Corolla S. David Truong was our Immediate Past Treasurer for 2012-2013, but more importantly he was an active and pivotal member to UCSD Circle K. Always there to lend a hand, lend a ear and even lend some advice. David isnt someone you can forget easily without inducing self amnesia. He was loud, he was confident and an inspirational leader. UCSD Circle K knows its not the last time we will be seeing you. Just know that, you are WANTED. 22
