Building on the durability and reliability of the C280 engine
platform, Caterpillar is pleased to offer the EPA Tier 2
compliant C280 engine line. The core components are the
same as the existing C280, including the latest in EUI fuel
system capabilities and state-of-the-art ADEM A3
Electronic Control Unit (ECU) features. Caterpillar
products continue to deliver more available power while
delivering outstanding fuel efficiency. You can also count
on long maintenance intervals and worldwide Caterpillar
parts and service availability.

General Comments

All previous ratings for the C280-6 through C280-16


propulsion engines are now available as EPA Tier 2 and
IMO compliant engines. The ratings have remained the
same but some combustion characteristics have changed.
As such, it is important to follow the oil change intervals as
documented in the appropriate maintenance manuals. Due
to changed combustion characteristics do not assume that
Tier 2 engines will have the same oil change intervals as
previous C280 or 3600 engines. A new Scheduled Oil
Sampling (SOSSM) analysis must be done to determine
actual oil change intervals.

outline in the On-line Price List.

Note: C280 ratings require 32C SCAC temperature at standard


ambient conditions.

injector fuel system, rigid wiring harness
(10 amp, 24 volt power required to drive ECU)

freshwater and seawater pumps, engine coolant

Fuel System
Engine operates on MDO; fuel injection
system consists of engine-driven fuel transfer
pump and an electronic unit injector for each
cylinder, engine-mounted duplex fuel filters,
and flexible connections
Lube Oil System
Top-mounted crankcase breather, two
centrifugal oil filters with single shutoff (three
filters for 12 and 16 cylinder), gear-driven
pump, duplex oil filter, crankcase explosion
relief, oil filler and dipstick

Monitoring, Alarm, and Safety Control


System
Alarms and shutdowns provided as required by
marine society for unmanned machinery
spaces. Marine Monitoring System II [listed as
Programmable Logic Control (PLC) in the
Price List] or Engine Control Panel are
available; systems include temperature,
pressure, and speed sensors; optional: oil mist
detector or particle detector available; cylinder
pressure relieve valves (for cold weather
operation) available for 16 cylinder engines
