APPENDIX 3.5.3
On January 26th, 2012, LIT and their GM counterparts, Laura Bedford and Phoebe Kallin, held their first meeting. LIT was supplied with a copy of last years project deliverables, and the Family Days theme related to the At Home with the World exhibition. LIT investigated the available space at the GM for the maximum number of participants (see appendix 3.5.2) and determined each events target audience. LIT set deadlines for the events initial objectives and ideas. On January 29th, LIT held a team meeting to set objectives and brainstorm ideas for Family Days event sessions. Further ideas were developed during a second meeting on February 4 th. LIT met with the Project Manager on February 8th to discuss and refine the teams idea for the Family Days event. On February 10th, LIT delivered fourteen Family Days workshop ideas to their GM counterparts, who provided feedback and helped LIT adapt their ideas. In order for LIT to acquire a better understanding of context in the GMs learning sessions, team members took part on February 2nd in a half-term holiday session as volunteers observing the process. In addition, LIT joined the Freelancer meeting after the sessions and developed detail ideas for the Family Days session from this meeting. The volunteer experience helped LIT members to specify suitable sessions for the Family Days. LIT tried to create sessions based on Howard Gardeners Theory of Multiple Intelligences encouraging participants to shape knowledge through hands-on/multi-sensory activities. LIT also aimed to make learning sessions link with the At Home with the World exhibition and to share values with society delivering learning experiences that improved relationships between family members. Thus, LIT tried to make most sessions accessible for all ages with the exception of The World of Chopsticks workshop due to safety reasons. While preparing for the Family Days, LIT faced many difficulties. At the very beginning LIT had difficulties understanding the difference between the Student Homes Project and the GM exhibition At Home with the World. During the initial meeting, LIT quickly realised the Family Days were closely linked with the GMs exhibition rather than the Student Homes Project creating a divide. However, LIT attempted to create a connection by involving international students in The World of Chopsticks workshop who had brought their own chopsticks from abroad all the way to London. Family Days Proposal Presented to GM on February 10th:

FAMILY DAYS RESEARCH AND COLLABORATION WITH FACILITATORS On March 2nd, LIT held a team meeting to summarise the research undertaken for the Freelancers and discuss further steps. On March 8 th, LIT organised a meeting with GM staff and storytelling Freelancer, Julia. LIT presented information about the hot drinks session, the eastern zodiac workshop, and the origami activity. Afterward, LIT developed new origami mock-ups in order to help the Freelancer visualise the activity, and offered her further information on object handling, transcultural musical pieces, and traditional games from overseas. On March 22nd, LIT held a meeting with GM staff and Julia in order to review the storytelling sessions first draft. Julia included further multi-sensory activities and LIT requested that the storytelling be shorten in order to adjust to the sessions length. FAMILY DAYS THE WORLD OF CHOPSTICKS LIT was in charge of one Family Days session: The World of Chopsticks. LIT conducted research into the history of rice and chopsticks, and focused on countries in which rice is eaten as a main meal with the help of chopsticks. LIT sought help from a Freelance Designer to create the rice characters (see LIT project outcomes appendix 2.5.10). On March 30th, LIT held a rehearsal with their GM counterparts and received valuable feedback. On April 1st, LIT composed the sessions script. FAMILY DAYS LIST OF MATERIALS On March 8th, LIT held a meeting and outlined the materials required for the Family Days sessions. They were later ordered. FAMILY DAYS RISK ASSESSMENT On March 12th, LIT and their GM counterparts held a meeting to discuss the Family Days risk assessment. The GM provided the necessary form, and LIT amended the document as needed. PREPARING FOR AND ASSISTING WITH THE FAMILY DAYS On March 28th, LIT went to the GM in order to prepare for the Family Days event. LIT created stickers for the sessions in order to facilitate registration. LIT also designed signage informing visitors on workshop times and locations. LIT proceed to produce further tools

needed for the event: Time for a Cuppa posters, story session songs, eastern zodiac figures, bingo game cards, rice cultivation map, and rice characters. During the Family Days event on April 3rd and 4th, LIT manned the registration table and led The World of Chopsticks session. FAMILY DAYS RESULTS All sessions operated well and safely. Every young participant, along with their parents, were satisfied with the learning programmes regardless of some participants language difficulties. LIT presumed this is due to the activities being mostly multi-sensory as opposed to verbal. LANGUAGE DIFFICULTIES LIT faced a series of language related challenges; LIT is the only project team without a native English speaker. Within the team, communication was effective and efficient. However, LIT faced difficulties expressing their opinions clearly to other project team members, as well as to GM staff. LIT overcame these challenges by asking their colleagues for help and assistance. Prior to each panel meeting, LIT members ensured they had a detailed script in order to increase their confidence.

On March 22nd, LIT presented their initial ideas for the Global Homes event to their GM counterparts. LIT continued to brainstorm ideas and amended their original proposal on April 15th and again on April 27th after receiving valuable feedback from GM staff. LIT finalised the Global Homes schedule on April 30th. As opposed to the Family Days, this event was closely connected with the Student Homes Project. As such, LIT designed sessions in keeping with the projects communication messages focusing on student life. LIT sought input from fellow students on the evenings musical selection using social media; WRT polled people on the Geffryes Young Peoples Facebook page asking for their vote on three different song choices. LIT also sought input from project team members using a Google Docs file, where colleagues were asked to inscribe their favourite songs from various eras.
