Fonts & Formatting:

When you type a document in Word, you can change the way the letters look.
This is called Formatting

This word is written in normal text : hello


You can make it bold : hello
You can underline the text : hello
You can also make it italic : hello

You can also change the style of the letters. This is called a Font.

This is Times New Roman font : hello


This is Arial font : hello
This is Lucinda Sans Font : hello

You can change the size of text:

Size 12 : hello
Size 14 : hello
Size 16 : hello
To change the text in your document, you should select the text, and then
use the format menu or toolbar buttons to change the text.

Look at this table for ways to change your text:

Try this activity to see how formatting works.

Aim: Type and format the Australian National Anthem in a word


document

Open a File:
1. Go to the start menu
2. Move mouse pointer to “All Programs”
3. Move the mouse pointer to “Microsoft Office”
4. This menu will appear, click on Microsoft Office Word (Highlighted
Below)

NOTE: If your computer does not have Microsoft Office, look for Open
Office and open “Office Writer” by clicking on this menu item.

5. A new document will appear on your screen

Type Text:

1. Type the first verse of the Australian National Anthem

Advance Australia Fair

Australians all let us rejoice,


For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,


Advance Australia Fair.

Change Formatting:
1. Select the Title “Advance Australia Fair”. It should appear like this:

2. Press Ctrl + u.
3. The text should change like this:
Advance Australia Fair
4. Use your mouse to click on the Bold button on your toolbar
(See picture)

5. The text should change like this:


Advance Australia Fair
6. Use our mouse to select the text in the first paragraph
7. Change the text to italic by pressing Ctrl + I

Change Font Type & Size:


1. Select the last two lines of text. It should be highlighted like this:

In joyful strains then let us sing,


Advance Australia Fair.

2. Select the font “Arial” in the Font Type Box:

3. change the Size to 14 in the size box:


4. Your text should now appear like this:

Save the Document:


1. Go to the File Menu shown in this diagram. The file menu is always in
the top left hand corner:

2. Click on Save as
3. In the Save as dialog box, Click on my documents and in the File name
box enter a file name ‘Anthem’ and click save.
4. Your document has been saved in the My Documents folder with the
name “Anthem”.
5. Close the document by clicking on this button in the top right
corner of the document.
