TNRD says that Environment Canada forecasted this heat wave, which could translate into significant flooding in the next month and hundreds of hectares of water left standing, potentially teeming with mosquito larvae. However, communities in the Nicola Valley won't be part of this year's mosquito control program. The provincial West Nile virus (WNv) risk reduction program paid for egg-killing pesticides throughout the region in the past but that funding is not available this year. They have determined that WNv levels in BC are unlikely to reach those seen in other areas of North America that have experienced large, protracted outbreaks. And the TNRD has indicated that mosquitos are likely to persist even where it does spray. Where the program will be carried out primarily in the Thompson Valley crews will be working full time, but residents should still expect higher than normal numbers of mosquitoes this summer. A human-caused brush fire sparked on Coldwater Rd near Veale Rd Thursday afternoon and was quickly put out by Merritt Fire Dept. & Min. of Forest firefighters, but not before it burned grass, timber & slash on private property. Wildfire Mgt Branch responded to 2 wildfires sparked by people this weekend near Lillooet. One near Pavillion Lk, was reported shortly after 1pm Saturday afternoon. Progress was made by Sunday evening, and the fire was 85% contained, but had spread to an estimated 140 hectares. Steep terrain made it difficult for ground crews and airtankers to access portions of the fire, which burned vigorously. Approx. 50 firefighters will arrive today to further assist suppression efforts. On Friday evening, crews responded to the other, a fire near Gold Bridge. It had grown to 20 hectares in size, but is now fully contained. Effective at noon tomorrow, the size of open fires will be restricted in most of the Kamloops Fire Centre. Since April 1, crews have responded to wildfire incidents covering approx. 300 hectares many resulted from poorly planned open burning.
