Argala by graha removing the Obstruction. 1.Graha in 10th from the same house . 2.Graha in the 12th from that house. 3.Graha in the 3rd from that house. 4.Graha in the 9th from that house.

For Ketu ,argala is caused by a graha in the 9th from Ketu and is counteracted by the one in the 5th from it. For Rahu and Ketu grahas in the 4th ,2nd,11th ,3rd and 8th do not cause argala. Next Rule is that say Argala is caused by some Graha in a house. Then the Graha causing the Argala which removes this obstruction is powerfull enough to do so fully only if he traverses a longitude which is more than the longitude of the graha causing the argala in the first place. If on the other hand it is placed in the first few degrees of a sign then it cannot do so The system of Argala is used to determine the activation of planets and houses. Planets in the 4th, 2nd, 11th and 5th houses from a planet, cause "argala" to the planet. The more planets are found in such argala positions, the stronger the effect. A special case is when at least 3 malefics are in the 3rd house. Even though the 3rd is normally an argala obstructing house, malefics in the 3rd are particularly well placed and cause "Vipreet Argala", having the same positive effects as a normal Argala. Obstruction rules : Each argala can be obstructed or broken if there is planet in the house that is symmetrically opposite to the Graha in question. For example, an argala causing planet placed in the 4th would be obstructed by a planet in the 10th. Obstruction can only take place when the obstructing planet is sufficiently strong in Shadbala, and if there are at least as many obstructing planets as there are argala causing planets (for that particular position). An additional rule considers the signs as having 4 quarters of 7.5 degrees each. The obstructing Graha should be placed in the opposite quarter to (effectively) obstruct: the 1st and 4th quarter are opposites, and the 2nd and 3rd are opposites. For example if the Sun is in the 11th house in 9 degrees (that is the 2nd quarter) it could be obstructed by the Moon in the 3rd house if the Moon is between 15 and 22.5 degrees (3rd quarter). Rahu and Ketu : Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde, and the Argala causing positions and Argala obstructing positions are just the reverse. For example, a Graha in the 10th from Rahu causes Argala, and a Graha in the 4th from Rahu obstructs it. Parashara says that 1 unobstructed Argala will give limited effects, 2 unobstructed Argalas will give medium effect, and more than two unobstructed Argalas will give a strong effect. This phenomena will clearly manifest during the Dasha or Antardasha of such a planet having Argala. Effects of Argala on the Grahas : The effects of the Graha that gets Argala from multiple sources will manifest without obstruction. Whether these effects are positive or negative, depends mostly on the placement of the Graha as discussed in the tutorial section on "auspiciousness". However, argalas caused by malefics will decrease the auspiciousness somewhat, and argala from benefics will increase the auspiciousness. Therfore, the ideal situation would be to have a strong Argala from benefics.Effects of Argala on the Bhavas : The main effect of Argala on a house is that it's prime significations are manifested, for good or for bad. The effects of argala on the houses is described by Parashara thus. Note : Argala on the Lagna, Arudha Lagna, the 7th house and the 7th from the Arudha Lagna will make one famous and fortunate. As you can see, the primary effect of Argala on the houses is not necessarily positive, but depends on the nature of the house. The 3 Dusthan houses (6,8,12) will actually manifest their troublesome nature more, when receiving Argala. As a secondary consideration, argala caused by benefics will give an enjoyable and auspicious effect on the areas of life indicated by the house, while argala from malefics will give somewhat compromised enjoyment. If there is a combination of argalas from benefics and malefics, it would be some of both Formation of Argala BPHS Chapter 31 Slokas 1-10 1. Maitreya: O Mahri Parara, you have told of auspicious effects related to Argala. Kindly narrate its conditions and effects. 2-9. Formation of Argala: Maitreya, I will explain Argala (intervention) to know the definite effects of Bhavas and Graha. Grahas in the 4th, 2nd and the 11th cause Argalas, while obstructors of the Argala will be those in

the 10th, 12th and 3rd from a Bhava or a Graha. If the Argala-causing Graha is stronger than the obstructing one, the former will prevail. Or, if the number of Argalas are more than the obstructing Graha, then also the Argala will prevail. If there are 3 or more malefics in the 3rd they will cause Vipreet Argala (more effective intervention) which will also be harmless and be very favorable. The 5th is also an Argala place, while the Graha in the 9th will counteract such Argala. As Rahu and Ketu have retrograde motions, the Argalas and obstructions [on them] be also counted accordingly in a reverse manner. Mahris say that the Argala caused by one Graha will yield limited effect, by two medium and by more than two, excellent effects. Argalas should be counted from a Ri or a Graha, as the case may be. The Argala which is unobstructed will be fruitful, while the one duly obstructed will go astray. The Argala effects will be derived in the Da periods of the Ri or Graha concerned. 10. Special: The Argala caused by placement of a Graha in the first one fourth part of the Ri is countered by another placed in the 4th quarter of the respective obstructive Ri. Similarly a 2nd-quarter Argala is eliminated by the 3rd-quarter placement of another Graha. Commentary called Argala.

Argala is a very important concept in Vedic astrology. Argala in Sanskrit denotes an impediment or obstruction. Argala literally means "a bolt". Argala on a house shows an influence that intervenes in its affairs, decides some parts of it an -

have a more concrete influence. Planets with Argala simply decide some parts of the matter signified by the house. In other words, the influence caused by Argala is decisive. Some suggest that the Argala obstruction places are countable from the Argala place instead of from the original place, or Graha. This is not logical and a glance into Gochar Vedha (obstructions during transits) will confirm this. If the Graha Argala causing and the obstructing Graha described in Sloka 10 are in the respective quarters, the obstruction will take place, otherwise not. Note that the obstruction from the 12th house specifically affects the Argala from the 2nd house; similarly, the obstructions from the 10th, 9th and 3rd houses affect the Argalas from the 4th, 5th and 11th houses respectively, as shown in the first diagram below. The figure below illustrates the pattern of Argalas and their corresponding obstructing Argalas. Note that for Rahu and Ketu this pattern is reversed (use the pattern of Argalas for the obstructing Argalas, and the obstructing Argalas for the Primary and Secondary Argalas). The literal meaning of the word Argala is 'Bolt' that which has the ability to exert its influence on something.I am pasting below a part of an article I had written long ago.Guru Visti Larsen had written a good article on this topic and perhaps you can request him to upload it on his website as he keeps uploading various articles there for study. The literal translation of the term Argala is Intervention. This could be an intervention caused by a planet in the affairs of the house as well as on the effect of a particular planet. Hence, Argala becomes an important factor when we want to study the results of a particular house or even a planet. Argala from the various planets can also cause certain yogas and can also hinder certain yogas further making its study an important part of any chart. In transit too Argala holds its importance and so will the effects be felt as per the dasas. Various aspects of Argala Argala can have different factors to it. It is mainly a concept, which can further be applied to not only the various planets but also to houses. Thus we study Argala not just as the effect given by a planet on another planet but also its effect on the whole house and the native as well. Argala can be seen from not just the Lagna but from each house too. 1. Planets in one particular house (lets say A) will give Argala to planets in another house (lets say B) 2. Planets from another house (lets say C) may be obstructing the same Argala and changing the results further.

3 .Now how do we reckon the result of house B that is receiving Argala from House A and facing an obstruction at the same time from house C? Here its also important to note which planets are giving Argala and which planet is obstructing it. Are they only malefic planets or benefic and which is stronger ..All these factors will make an impact on the results of the house. If the same Argalas are on the Lagna then these factors will affect the native dierectly. It may give attributes to the persons nature. 4. Argala on various planets can be studied to look at a particular aspect in the chart. For example to see all the influences on the native's wealth-sources Argalas on Jupiter can be seen. 5. Argala is also studied not only on the various houses but on Arudha as well. Maharishi Parashar gives simple effects of Argala on Arudha. Should there be Argala on the Arudha Pada, for the natal Lagna and for the 7th from both, the native will be famous and fortunate. A malefic, or a benefic, causing unobstructed Argala, giving a Dristi to Lagna will make one famous. Similarly a malefic, or a benefic, causing unobstructed Argala, giving a Dristi to Dhan Bhava denotes acquisition of wealth and grains, to Sahaj Bhava happiness from co-born, to Bandhu Bhava residences, quadrupeds and relatives, to Putr Bhava sons, grand sons and intelligence, to Ari Bhava fear from enemies, to Yuvati Bhava abundant wealth and marital happiness, to Randhr Bhava difficulties, to Dharm Bhava fortunes, to Karm Bhava royal honour, to Labh Bhava gains and to Vyaya Bhava expenses. The Argala by benefics will give various kinds of happiness, while benefic effects will be meddling with malefic Argalas. Argala by both benefics and malefics will yield results. 6. Maharishis say, that the Argala, caused by one Grah, will yield limited effect, by two mediums and by more than two, excellent effects. Argalas should be counted from a Rasi, or a Graha, as the case may be. 7. The Argala, which is unobstructed, will be fruitful, while the one duly obstructed will go astray. The Argala effects will be derived in the Dasa periods of the Rasi, or Graha concerned. Calculation of Argala The 2nd house gives Argala to the lagna; the 12th house obstructs the same argala. The 11th house gives gains to the lagna; the 3rd house obstructs these gains. The 4th house ensures happiness to the native/lagna; the 10th house obstructs the same. The 5th house shows the future and the 9th show the past. The past always obstructs, the future, which is yet to be. So, 5th house gives argala, the 9th obstructs it. The 8th house gives Argala to lagna, and the 6th house obstructs it. Classification of Argala rgala can mainly be classified into: A. PRIMARY ARGALA: Argala given by the houses 2nd, 4th and11th is primary Argala. B. SECONDARY ARGALA: Argala given by houses 5th and 8th are Secondary Argala. Various terms for Argala: 1.Shubh Argala 2.Ashubh Argala or Papa Argala. 3.Virodha Argala. 4.Vipreeta Argala. The topic itself is very detailed but I have given you most of the outlines here.Gradually apply the rules and see a few charts to understand how a planet giving Argala will alter the other results. Best Wishes, Kanupriya

A planet or house in the 2nd, 4th and 11th houses from a planet or house causes primary Argala on the latter. Argala by a benefic planet is called a ubhrgala (benefic intervention) and Argala by a malefic planet is called a pprgala (malefic intervention). This simple concept can be better appreciated if some examples are given. The 4th house stands for education. The 2nd, 4th and 11th from the 4th house are 5th, 7th and 2nd houses respectively. One's intelligence (5th), interaction break one's education. If Jupiter is in 5th house, he will give 4 ' 5 gala (malefic 2

intervention) on 4th will cause obstacles in one's education by way of poor intelligence. Similarly, benefics and malefics in the houses causing Argala cause good and bad intervention. Basically, the point is that intelligence, interaction an things that decide one's education. They have a decisive role. Let us take another example. Domestic harmony, comfort, well-being and happiness are seen from the 4th house. What are the things that can make or break domestic harmony? Of course, wife, children and other family members! Each of them can intervene in one's domestic harmony. No wonder the 5th, 7th and 2nd houses have an Argala on the 4th house (being the 2nd, 4th and 11 th respectively from the 4th house)! If a malefic in 5th has / 4 Apart from the 2nd, 4th and 11th houses from a house, the 5th house from a house has a secondary Argala on it. In the case of learning, Argala of 8th house on 4th (8th is the 5th from 4th) shows the influence of hard work in learning. Hard work is another decider. V V 5 F x B obs S ' A A S unobstructed. Today, you will find many articles about the argala of a planet/sign. However, desipite the best efforts, many of learners cannot use the principles nor can they apply them in the chart. I will not speak about argala in a techical matter, for all about it can be found in books of my Jyotish Guru Pt. Sanjay Rath, as well as classical texts such as Parashara and Jaimini. In the context of understanding argalas, you should analyze each argala in detail (primary argalas are 2.4.11 positions). You should also keep in mind that Virodha Argala completelly may change or block the argala. Dhana Argala Result on Lagna I will take one graha position and give you the effect of Dhana Argala. You can check it practical horoscopes and see the results. You will be suprised by the effect found. We will take Rahu position in the 2nd house which has dhana Argala on Lagna. Keep in mind that Rahu can be found in 12 different signs, where resources and effects will be slightly modified, and Rahu can also be found in different positions from different Lagnas, can rule different bhavas and be influneced by different graha. Nevertheless, the effect of dhana Argala of Rahu in 2nd house are as follow: 1. Loss of money which will come through significations of the house ruled by Rahu 2. bad health, loss of longevity in time (deadly disease) 3. shocks and troubles in family which will negativelly affect the life and health of a person 4. Influx of wealth if Guru is placed in Lagna, 3rd, 6th and 10th house. If rahu is placed in Kanja wealth is there, while in Karka, a person will get wealth from foreign sources. In other signs judge accordingly. In any case, there will always be plans and confusion about the money which may cause a lack of mental peace 5. A person is extremelly egoistic, angry and selfish (yet a person hides these within themselves) 6. A speech is diplomatic, a person lies and has no boundaries in speech. May speak a shocking things or revealing personal things which are shocking to others 7. A person is not Sundari (internally and externally beautiful), and nas no style, manners. Eyes are usually small or not appealing (Mark of Rahu).

8. No matter how intelligent a person is, there will be stupid decisions, lack of wisdom during the lifetime, particularly those related to family or money. 9. A person easily losses mental and physical energy, disperce in plans and lacks initiative 10. Life can stop or get entangled in family matters, money or other area depending on the position of other planets and points in 2nd bhava. In this way, you should understand all planets having dhana argala on lagna from 2nd house. This should be

wiselly applied on dhana argals on various houses. Argalas the planetary interventions. From Cologne Digital Sanskrit Lexicon: argala: A wooden bolt or pin for fastening a door or the cover of a vessel, a bar , check , impediment ; a wave. Or Name of a hell in Padma Puraana. Argala means a bolt or lock or an intervention. In Jyotish it means an intervention by a Raashi, the Bhaava in the Raashi and Grahas if any in that Raashi will intervene or influence another Raashi, the Bhaava in the Raashi and the Grahas if any in the Raashi. Again these interventions can be blocked by other Raashis (also the Bhaava in the Raashi and the grahas therein) these obstructions are called Virodhargala. As a real life example: Suppose I want to keep cash in my wallet, this is only possible when I withdraw it from my savings. The cash in my wallet will be influenced by my savings, then again the amount of cash that I spend from it will decrease my cash. So my savings intervenes (Argala) in my day to day affairs and the saving in turn is influenced by my spending habit (Virodhargala). Thus we see how each house influences and intervenes in the affairs of other houses, nothing works in isoloation in real life as well as in Jyotish. Argalas are of two types benefic and malefic, called Subhargala and Paapargala. Benefics planets (Subha Graha) cause Subhargala and Malefic Planets (Paapa Grahas) cause Paapargala. There are three categories of Argalas: 1. Primary Argala. 2. Special Argala (Some call it Nirabhasa Argala other call this Vipareeta Argala). 3. Secondary Argala. There are two kinds of Virodhargalas. 1. Primary virodhargala. 2. Secondary Virodhargala. We will deal each one of them: The Primary Argala and Primary Virodhargala. Primary Argala are influences or supports that are instantly or grossly felt, Primary Virodhargala are obstructions that we are aware of instantly and grossly. From a particular Bhaava, Raashi or Graha, the 4th, 2nd and 11th Raashi (with the Bhaava and Graha in it) cause of primary Argala . These Argalas are obstructed by the 10th, 12th and the 3rd Raashi respectively. This means that the Argala of the 4th Raashi is obstructed by the 10th Raashi from the Bhaaava, the Argala from the 2nd is obstructed by the 12th and from the 11th by the 3rd. The fourth Bhaava Argala is technically called the Sukhargala. Sukh means happiness. So you can understand that this Argala intervenes in the Happiness of a particular Bhaava or Graha. The Sukha argala is obstructed by the 10th. What this means is that the fourth from any house is the house of rest, the home and the tenth from any house is the place of work for that house, it is the place where rest is not the priority. Home and office oppose each other (except for the few lucky ones who work from home!) The second Bhaava argala is called the Dhana argala, Dhana means Money or resources, so the second from any Bhaava or Graha intervenes either beneficially or otherwise by influencing the resources available for that Bhaava. The Dhana aargala is obstructed by the 12th Bhaava from the Bhaava under focus. Well, we all know how much our savings are related to our expenses. The second from any Bhaava or

Graha shows the amount of resources available to it and the twelfth form that particular Bhaava or Graha shows its expenses and losses. The eleventh Bhaava or Graha Argala from a Particular Bhaava or Graha is called Laabh Argala. Laabh means Profit or gain and this is obstructed by the Bhaava or Graha in the Third. Amongst other things the eleventh Bhaava from any particular Bhaava or Graha shows the gains or profit of that particular Bhaava. Whereas the third from the Particular Bhaava or Graha is the house of courage or daring (carried to the extreme it is recklessness) is required to profit. Remember no risk-no gain. That is why the Third house from a particular Bhaava or Graha falls under a special category of Argala. Special Argala: Malefics in the Third from a particular bhaava or Graha cause Argala on their own in addition to obstructing the Argala of the eleventh from that particular bahaava or Graha. This argala is not obstructed by any bhaavas. Remember only if the third from a particular Bhaava or Graha is occupied by malefics (some say more than two malefics) is this Argala caused, if there are benefics as well as malefics then the malefics should be more in number and strong. It is called as Niraabhaasa Argala by some and Vipereeta Argala by others. This shows that initially the objective is obstructed but later it is achieved due to Paraakrama (extra effort or courage) on part of the Jaatak (native). So even though it is a Paapargala it is still a positive thing as it shows that extra push and drives necessary to achieve the goal. Special Argala is also caused by the planets/sign in the 7th house. This is obstructed by the planet/sign in the Lagna r first house. Secondary Argala and Virodhargala: The fifth from a particular Bhaava or Graha in the Horoscope cause Argala to that particular Bhaava or Graha. This is obstructed by the ninth from that particular Bhaava or Graha. This is a secondary influence and not easily felt or noticed and only with time are these noticed. In a way we all know that the future (our projections and estimates) always subtly influence us to the extent of intervening on our present circumstances and the Future is always obstructed or otherwise by the past. Other even less secondary Argala is of the eight bhaava from a particular Bhaava or Graha and this is obstructed by the sixth Bhaava from the particular Bhaava or Graha. Special rule for Ketu: Maharishi Jaimini in Upadesa Sutra gives the dictum. Vipereetam Ketuh There is a special way of finding Argalas from Ketu. To see Argalas from Ketu we have to reverse the order. The houses which cause Argalas to other Grahas or Bhaavas will cause Virodhargala to Ketu, i.e. the 2nd, 4th and the 11th cause virodhargala and the 12th, 10th and the 3rd cause Argala on it. In addition the 11th house causes special Argala if occupied by malefics. So also the secondary Argalas be reversed. We will illustrate this concept with a Horoscope in the next post on this topic. Till then try to soak it in. RishiRahul and vivek. Combination of Dashas & Transits In the sections on dashas and the section on transits we have already seen a few ways in which dashas and transits are used together. Now let's look at a more complete list of how these two techniques integrate:-When a dasha starts, it marks the start or birth of a new period of time in life. The transits at that start of the dasha will give an indication of how favorable or unfavorable the period will be. Particularly the position of the mahadasha lord is important: The effects are favorable if at the commencement of the dasha, the dasha lord is transitting the Lagna, or is exalted/own sign/friend's sign [in transit]. The results of the dasha will be unfavorable if the dasha lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house [in transit], or is debilitated or in enemy's sign [in transit]. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Of course this principle extends to all the other factors that make a planet favorable or afflicted. Combustion, placement in sandhi and conjunction with malefics are a few other important ones

As the dasha progresses, the dasha lords will keep moving in transit. Think of these grahas as activated due to the fact that they are dasha lords, and pay particular attention to their transits over natal grahas, and house cusps (bhava madya).- When the potential of a current dasha lord in the natal chart is reinforced or repeated in its position in transit, it will most likely trigger an event. For example, if the mahadasha lord rules the 12th house, and transits the 12th from the Moon, it may trigger a 12th house related event. A more specialized situation of the former principle is found when the dasha lords interact with each other in transit. This could be a conjunction, aspects, sambhanda or yoga formed. If the dasha lords in transit form such a configuration that reinforces the relationship they have in the natal chart, the effects will be strongly manifested and results in an event. As the dasha lords get strong and weak in shadbala in the transit chart, their effects will also rise and fall. The ashtakavarga scores of the signs transitted by the dasha lords will further affect the favorable or unfavorable results of the dasha period. The above principles should not be used in isolation, but they have to be combined sensibly. Always look for repeating patterns. As stated before, each and every event must be indicated in the natal chart for it to be possible to manifest due to the dashas and transits.Parashara's Light offers several tools to help you use the above principles. When you have a animated transit chart on the worksheet along with a dasha cell, you can right-click on any dasha and the animated transits cell will show the transits at eth time that dasha started. This is very helpful to quickly look at the transits for each dasha change.- The Graphical Ephemeris worksheet shows the dashas and transits alongside. This is helpful to get a monthat-a-time overview of both.- The transit dasha report lets you compile lists of dasha changes and major transits sorted by date
