Implemented worlds one of the most complex and state-of-the-art unified Load Despatch and Communication Schemes for modernization of five Regional Load Despatch Centres and National Load Despatch Centre Project Feasibility & System Planning carried out by using advanced tecnical softwares, viz. PSS/E, PSCAD, EMTP etc. for load flow studies, dynamic/ transient studies, short circuit studies etc. More than 100 transmission projects (with voltage level of 400 kV and above), of varying size, technology and geographical terrain, costing more than US$ 7.12 billion implemented. Developed standard design of towers and foundations up to 765 kV AC and 800 kV HVDC for varied geo-technical and geographical conditions. Implemented Asias longest HVDC Bi-pole, about 1400 kms, 2000 MW East-South Interconnect (Talcher-Kolar link) within a tight implementation time frame of 33 months. Rich experience of managing large contracts for projects financed by Multilateral Funding Agencies, viz. the WB, ADB, JBIC etc. as per their guidelines. Developed and implemented a comprehensive Works and Procurement Policy standardising various processes and procedures to be followed.
PIONEERING EFFORTS
Implementing 800 kV, 6,000 MW HVDC Bi-pole line of about 1,800 kms Development of 1200 kV UHV AC Test Station along with a 1200 kV Test Line indigenously, as a collaborative effort with manufactures Smart Grid - Wide Area Monitoring, Adaptive Islanding, Voltage Security Assessment, Dynamic Security Assessment under planning GPS/GIS (Global Positioning/ Information System) based survey techniques Developed pole type/ multi circuit tower structures for 400 kV transmission lines Use of high temperature endurance conductors Use of High Surge Impedance Loading (HSIL) Line Use of Fixed / Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (FSC/TCSC) Up-rating and up-grading of existing transmission lines Grid Operation through modem Load dispatch Centres with SCADA / EMS Automation of Sub-stations

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE
Enhancing Value to Customers
Employs state-of-the-art technologies in operation & maintenance of assets to achieve high system availability Hotline Maintenance Live line detection of insulat or failure Emergency Restoration System (ERS) for quick restoration of lines Thermo vision scanning of sub-station equipment Condition monitoring of equipment Focus on preventive maintenance; On line monitoring of equipment in addition to Off line techniques. Periodic assessment of equipment using Condition Assessment Techniques with sophisticated tools. Live line washing of insulators by helicopter in heavily polluted stretches. Use of polymer insulators on critically polluted stretches of EHV AC transmission lines. State-of-the-aft oil testing laboratories at various locations in India, for our own requirements as well as to serve other Power Utilities. Remote operation of 26 sub-stations of 400kV class.

ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENTS
POWERGRID is committed to the goal of sustainable development and conservation of nature & natural resources and strictly follows the basic principles of Avoidance, Minimization and Mitigation in dealing with Environmental and Social issues. V/here necessary, restoration & enhancement is also undertaken. Developed Environment & Social Policy and Procedures (ESPP) through a broad consultation with stakeholders to pre-empt all possible Environmental and Social issues. An independent committee oversees ESPP implementation at project level. The effective implementation of ESPP has resulted in the reduction of Forest involvement from 6% in 1998 to 1.35% in 2009. Conferred Green Award 2006 by the World Bank for leadership and commitment to promote environmental sustainability. Developing Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) for the transfer of clean and green power from far-flung areas of North Eastern to Northern Region for reduction of millions of tons of Green House Gas Emission. Designed special towers to avoid disturbance to habitation, wildlife and trees in ecologically sensitive areas. Certified to Social Accountability Standard SA 8001:2001.
SCADA/EMS
Implemented state-of-the-art Unified Load Despatch & Communication (ULDC) schemes in all the five electrical regions of the country. Control centres are provided with advanced SCADA/ EMS software applications and are designed for operation in four level of hierarchical structure namely Sub-Load Despatch Centres, State Load Despatch Centres, Regional Load Despatch Centres (RLDCs) and National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC). The SCADA/EMS systems are based on distributed architecture incorporating open system features. This architecture allows modular expansion in hardware as well as in application software to meet future requirements of expanding Power System.
Over head optic fibre ensures high telecom network availability of about 99.9%.
Owns & operates pan India optic fibre Telecom Network of over 21,000 kms, providing connectivity to all metros, major cities & towns in India, thereby establishing marked presence in even remotest areas of the country.
