CHILDREN & YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS

As we come to the end of the school year, there are lots of celebrations going on, well, because there are lots of things to celebrate! This past weekend we celebrated the accomplishments of those who have finished their college education. In the next couple of weeks, we will celebrate those who are graduating from high school. Many will be celebrating the completion of another school year and marking other accomplishments this year by receiving awards and honors. There are some who also celebrate milestones in their lives: retirement, getting a drivers license, moving from job to career, finding a first job, or getting married. In fact, we celebrate with our own Chris Firey and his wedding this Saturday. We love to celebrate things that we remember: birthdays and anniversaries, moments that recall to our mind special days and events. Each year when my childrens birthdays roll around, I spend a little bit of time remembering what happened on those days they were born and recall with great pleasure the joys of those days as well as the joy of having another year with them. Every Sunday we celebrate as a gathered community of faith. Every Sunday our worship culminates in the celebration of the Lords Supper. It is the pinnacle of our service, the moment to which the whole service builds. Sometimes we get caught up in the solemnity of remembering only Jesus death. However, in the early church, even that was an occasion of celebration. The cup that was raised in memory of Jesus was in many senses a libation a cup of celebration lifted in honor of a generous benefactor. Along with being an opportunity to remember, it is also a table of hope. In a number of places in the gospels, the image of a great banquet is used for the age to come. The Lords Supper prefigures and connects with that great banquet. So it is an act of our hope. More than that, though, the Lords Supper is a celebration and bringing together of our gifts and Gods gifts. It is, to use another name for the event, a Great Thanksgiving. The Lords table is a place to which we bring our offerings of money, time, energy, bread, cup, and even our very selves and to which God brings grace, life, redemption, and Gods very own self. Our gifts to God and Gods gifts to us are combined in our celebration and together we sit at the table and feast! Often we separate the acts of offering and communion; we find them to be two distinct practices. I wonder: what are ways that we can bring together both in our minds and in our practice the offering that we share and the offering that God shares? How do we in our minds and practice make that coming together the pinnacle of our worship and an act of celebration? Shalom, Pastor Owen
