Boost for churchs 150th anniversary

RAIN did little to dampen spirits at the May Fair at Southgate Green on Bank Holiday Monday. The 34th annual event, organised by Christ Church Southgate in The Green, raised money for three charities. This is the churchs 150th year and 6,000 was raised for The London Centre for Children with Cerebral Palsy, the Brain Tumour Research campaign and the churchs anniversary fund. Stalls sold books, plants and jewellery and the Hatters Explorer Scouts Unit ran a barbecue. Jazz music rang through the air as well as a serenade of olde English madrigals sung by the church choir. Christiana During, the outgoing mayor of Enfield, was among the visitors and crowned Alexandra Rogers as the May Queen. She also presented garlands to her attendants Amelia Marriott and Imogen Morris. Organising committee member Phillip Dawson said: We are grateful to everyone who has been involved in making the fair happen, in particular the Highlands and Southgate Squadron Air Training Corp for providing many volunteers and Enfield Council for closing The Green, allowing the return of the popular miniature railway. Father Peter Jackson, who presented prizes to the winners of the childrens art competition, said: Raising as much for charity as last year will be a magnificent achievement and demonstrates the generosity of our community. What a wonderful way to mark the start of our 150th anniversary celebrations. The events continue with a flower festival and concert by the church choir at 7.30pm on Friday May 18. The church will be open for morning and afternoon viewing throughout the weekend Fair queen: Alexandra Rogers
