This is a nifty tool you may use in your endeavor to pass the AP Art History Exam. This chart only contains and highlights the juicy/highly-informational Non-Western Art pieces in Gardeners Art Through the Ages textbook. I hope it helps! Problem: Throughout the academic year, you will be assigned Non-Western Homework. Oftentimes, when attempting to complete these assignments, you are asked to select your favorite Non-Western Art Piece from the chapter and elaborate on it. Most times, you will end up choosing an art piece that does not have a sufficient amount of information to elaborate. Significance: This Non-Western Chart pulls out all the non-western pieces from each culture in the textbook that have plenty of information. This should make elaborating on an art piece easier. It also categorizes each art piece under possible motifs often seen on the non-western essay portion of the AP Art History Exam. What To Use It For: Non-Western Comparison Charts Non-Western Object Reports Choosing your Big 5 Non-Western art pieces for the Non-Western essay portion of the AP Art History Exam How To Use It: Look for the Culture or Chapter you are currently reading or interested in. Ex. I am interested in the culture of Southeast Asia in Chapter 6. View several different art pieces listed and choose your favorite one. (The page number of the piece is in parenthesis) Ex. Court of Gayumars is located on page (359) Regardless of the assignment, you will have to elaborate on the art piece. But the best part about it is all the information and more is there. When choosing your Big 5 for the AP Exam, select art pieces that fall under several motifs (see Art Under Multiple Motifs on the next page). This way you can manipulate the piece to answer the prompt. Ex. Shiva as Nataraja (173) under the South & Southeast Asian culture in Ch. 6 falls under the motifs of (1) Nature, Animals, & Landscape, (2) Power, Authority, & Status, (3) Religious, Spiritual, & Sacred Spaces, and (4) Violence.
