1.01 EEE302 To the course aims to expose the students to the various faults in power system and learn the various methods of protection scheme and to understand the current interruption in power systems and study the various switchgears. On completion of the course the students will be able to Estimate the fault currents and fault MVA for different types of faults. Apply the different types of relays and schemes for protection of power system components. Calculate the performance of CBs during fault conditions. Introduction Electrical faults nature and causes of faults types of faults fault current calculation using symmetrical components Principles and need for protective schemes - Zones of protection and essential qualities of protection Power system earthing and neutral grounding. Operating Principles and Relay Constructions Basic properties of relay - Electromagnetic relays Over current, directional, distance and under frequency relays static relays Equipment Protection Differential scheme for protection of transformer, generator, motor, protection of bus bars, transmission lines CTs and PTs and their applications in protection schemes. Circuit Breakers Difference between circuit breakers and isolators making and breaking capacity - Types of Circuit Breakers Air blast, Air break, Oil, SF6 and Vacuum circuit breakers comparative merits of different circuit breakers Testing of circuit breakers. Earth leakage circuit breakers and measurements. Theory of Circuit Interruption Physics of arc phenomena and arc interruption.
