Reflection on the Different Periods of Philosophy Last January 18, 2012, we visited our neighboring school, the_______ seminary to witness their exhibit of the different periods in the history of philosophy in celebration of their Philosophy Week. These periods are the ancient, medieval, modern, contemporary and oriental period. The seminarians were very welcoming and hospitable as they point out the focus and center of study of each period. First is the ancient period. They first defined what philosophy is and how we can relate it to our everyday experience. The main attraction of the period was the chair with a dry plant implying the different branches or ideas that make up the ancient philosophy. The speaker introduced Socrates as the wisest man; for to him the only thing he knew was that he knows nothing. That is an evidence of humility. Several ancient philosophers were also introduced. They also showed the four basic elements of the world: the fire, water, earth and metal. Air was not counted in because at that time, they believe that it was already present in the four elements. The focus of this period was the search for the principle of all things. Next is the medieval period. It was the most creative presentation for me because it made use of voice recording and the art of black light. The focus of the period was the study of the creator of the universe, universe itself and the reconciliation of faith and reason. After that is the modern period. This was the most excellent for me when it comes to pointing out the periods focus. The speaker was so firm in explaining himself. This period according to him was the beginning of the fall of man and rise of technology. Man chose to only use his reason and not faith. They were drastically affected by modernization and industrialization. He emphasized the building of Mall of Asia. He believed that sooner or later, the biggest mall in Asia will collapse due to its weak foundation. He also pointed out that man can live without technology but not without our natural resources. They can be put together but Gods nature should never be put second priority over mans technology. We, of all the creation should know that.

The fourth one, the contemporary period focused on the study of oneself- the things that make a human person. Many candles were there, symbolizes the light in discovering the profoundness of human structures. Different aspects or region of life were displayed: family, religion, media, politics etc. These all take part in making a person a whole. The last one is the oriental period. It felt like an early celebration of the Chinese New Year because theyve displayed a large dragon and some Chinese lanterns. Shadow display showing the union of man and nature can also be seen. The yin and yang that maintains the balance of the world was the conclusion of the presentation. They also showed a bit of every period: the elements of ancient, the balance of faith and reason of medieval, the technology of modern and the development of oneself of the contemporary period. We ended our visit by voting our favorite period. I voted oriental because I find it as the most successful in presenting creatively, in explaining clearly and in maintaining the audience interest. I learned a lot trough this visit. Truly, not all knowledge can be learned inside the four corners of the classroom. The seminarians were successful in making the event as interesting as possible because they made good comparisons and relation to our everyday life. I am very thankful to them and to our professor for giving us the opportunity to appreciate philosophy and learn more.
