Homework-1: Large Deformation Analysis of a Plate Consider the cantilever plate with a transverse force at one corner shown

in Figure. The plate has a length, width, and thickness of 40 m, 30 m, and 0.4 m, respectively. Its elastic modulus is 120 MPa, and the Poisson's ratio is 0.3. The maximum applied load of 40 kN is reached in five equal increments. The nonlinear geometry option is used in the ANSYS solution. This is achieved by writing Load Step Files for each increment, and obtaining the solution from these files. The goal is to find the displacement components as the applied load increases, at points A and B shown in Figure.

Homework-2: Plastic Deformation of an Aluminum Sphere Consider a thin-walled aluminum sphere with a radius of r = 10in and a thickness of t = 0.2 in, as shown in Figure 1. The sphere is subjected to an internal pressure of Po =1600psi. The elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio of the shell are E = 10 psi and = 0.3, respectively. The plastic behavior of aluminum is governed by

e = 30000 + 136000 ( p )1 / 2

in which e is the effective stress and p designates the plastic strain. Figure 2 shows the stress vs. total strain curve based on above Equation. This curve is input in ANSYS by means of a data table for nonlinear material behavior, which is given through data points (see Table). The goal is to obtain the radial displacements, as well as the strain field.
MODEL GENERATION

In order to model the thin-walled aluminum sphere, a 2-noded axisymmetric shell element (SHELL51) is used. For the nonlinear material behavior, the multiple-point isotropic hardening rule is chosen (TB command with MISO option). Twenty data points for strain and stress values are entered using the TBPT command [the data point (0, 0) is implied]. The stress value of the first data point defines the yield stress, i.e., ( Y = 30000psi. Due to the symmetry conditions, only a quarter circle is modeled.

Homework-3: Pin-in-hole interference fit

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

One end of a steel pin is rigidly fixed to the solid plate while its other end is force fitted to the steel arm. The configuration is shown in Figure.

This is a 3D analysis but because of the inherent symmetry of the model, analysis will be carried out for a quarter-symmetry model only. There are two objectives of the analysis. The first is to observe the force fit stresses of the pin, which is pushed into the arms hole with geometric interference. The second is to find out stresses, contact pressures, and reaction forces due to a torque applied to the arm(force acting at the arms end) and causing rotation of the arm. Stresses resulting from shearing of the pin and bending of the pin will be neglected purposefully. The dimensions of the model are as follows: pin radius=1 cm, pin length=3 cm; arm width=4 cm, arm length=12 cm, arm thickness=2 cm; and hole in the arm: radius=0.99 cm, depth=2 cm (through thickness hole). Both the elements are made of steel with Youngs modulus=2.1109 N/m2, Poissons ratio=0.3 and are assumed to be elastic.
