DESCRIPTION This course examines the English language for Information Technology professionals who will be serving the international software companies. It prepares students English skills to enter the IT industry as a software engineer. Emphases are on how to improve their English in all four areas: reading, writing, listening and speaking for project teams working in a dynamic global context. B. ORGANIZATION This is a lecture course, yet conducted in a professional manner as an engineer would expect in client engagements. Students are required to actively participate, effectively collaborate, and conduct themselves as professional engineers at all times. All class materials and students work are in English. However, instructions and discussions in class are in Vietnamese. C. COURSE OBJECTIVES The course objectives are: 1. To help students to learn their English in all four areas: reading writing, listening and speaking, 2. To help students to improve their English/communication skills in college and beyond and 3. To help students to express themselves in professional manners. D. COURSE TOPICS The course covers the following topics: 1. How to improve English for College and Beyond 2. Technical Writing 3. PROFESSIONAL SKYPE ASSIGNMENT: Students set up a Skype account for use in their professional career. See Professional Skype Account and Usage for details on how to do this assignment. To receive full credit for this assignment, students must write a short self-introduction and ask Mr. NGO H. Thong at Skype ID enclaveIT.edu to add them to his Skype contact. This assignment will be due at 5 PM sharp on Sat, 03-Mar-2012 on Skype. PROFESSIONAL E-MAIL ASSIGNMENT: Students set up an e-mail account for use in their professional career. See Professional E-mail Account and Usage for details on how to do this assignment. To receive full credit for this assignment, from the new e-mail accounts, students must write an e-mail to Mr. NGO H. Thong at thong.ngo@enclave.vn to invite him to a meeting. The e-mail should have time, date and a meeting fee. This assignment will be due at 5 PM sharp on Sat, 07-Apr-2012. TERM PAPER: Students are required to write a term paper on an IT English issue. They may choose to read a book or several articles on an IT English issue and write a 500-word report in English. All reading materials must be in English. This report should include a summary of what has been read and the students opinions. It must be in MS Word format and free of spelling errors (red underlined), grammar errors (green underlined) and confusing word conflicts (blue underlined). Students must turn in: 1. All reading materials, 2. Five-hundred-word report in MS Word format and 3. The same 500-word report in PDF format. Students should ask the instructor if they are unsure of their selected IT English issue. The term paper will due at 5 PM sharp on Sat, 05-May-2012 either via e-mail or in the instructors office. A late term papers scores might be significantly reduced. FINAL EXAM:

The final exam will be comprehensive on all materials covered in class. Students are allowed to use all notes and books during the exam. Discussions with other students are prohibited. It will be given on the last two hours of the course on (the time and date will be scheduled later in the course). PUNCTUALITY AND ATTENDANCE: Punctuality and attendance will be recorded and graded. The 15 class meetings are worth 15% of the total grade or 1% for each class meeting. When a student is late or leaves early, he or she might lose up to 1% for that class meeting. Note that students are responsible for missed materials during tardiness or absences. G. CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT Students are expected to strictly observe the following classroom rules: 1. Mobile phones must be turned off or put in silence mode. 2. All private conversations during class must be limited to just two students and reduced to the minimum in duration and volume. 3.
