Experimental Details
The experiment is divided into 2 parts. In the first part, the effect of wavelength on photoelectric current was observed, while in the second part, the effect of intensity on it was examined. The experiment made use of a (1) Mercury light source, (2) diffraction grating, which spreads the light from the Mercury light source into its spectra, (3) h/e apparatus, (4) digital multimeter and (5) alligator clips. For the second part of the experiment, a (6) transmission filter, which was used to adjust the light transmission or the intensity of light being transmitted (whether 100%, 80%, 60%, 40% or 20%), and (7) yellow and green filters were used. (See Figure 1 below)

Figure 1. The photoelectric effect setup

In Part 1: Observation of the Effect of Wavelength on Photoelectric Current, the voltage readings (stopping potential) of the five colors, of different wavelengths, in the first and second order spectra (See Table 1 for the wavelengths of the spectral lines of Mercury) were recorded. This was done by adjusting the h/e apparatus such that only the specific color, from which the voltage reading is being taken, falls upon the opening mask of the apparatus. This was done for all the five colors in the first and second orders, and each time the h/e apparatus was discharged. Table 1. Wavelengths of spectral lines of Mercury Color Ultraviolet Violet Blue Green Yellow Wavelength 365 405 436 546 578

In Part 2: Observation of the Effect of Intensity on Photoelectric Current, the voltage readings (stopping potential) of the first order yellow spectral line and first order green spectral line at different light transmissions or intensities (at 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, and 20%) using a transmission filter. Similarly with the first part, the voltage readings were obtained by adjusting the h/e apparatus such that only the color of the spectral line under observation (whether yellow or green) falls on the opening of the apparatus. Then, the apparatus is twisted about its base until the maximum voltage reading is obtained. Before proceeding with the experiment, the dark voltage value, which

is subtracted from the voltage readings acquired from the experiment, was recorded. This is obtained by blocking the Mercury light and measuring the voltage reading. Also, the charge time, or the approximate time required to recharge the instrument to the maximum voltage after discharging the apparatus each time, was recorded. ******************************************************************************************** Reference: [1] Physics 73.1 Worksheet
