WHAT ROLE HAS THE LEADER PLAYED IN CHAMPIONING GENDER AND GBV ACTIVITIES?
In 2009, co-founded the Men for Change Network, HOPEM, a civil society network composed of 25 national/international organizations and human rights activists dedicated to address negative masculinities/engage men and boys in fighting GBV, promoting gender equality and SRH. Julio is the current coordinator of HOPEM and has been leading its campaigns

As the UNiTE campaign focal person in Mozambique, 2011, worked with civil society organizations, UN Women and the government to acelerate the end of GBV. One of the highlihts of this work was the creation of the first multistakeholder/multisectoral platform for coordination of GBV efforts and policy dialogue (GCCV) at national level
Has been a facilitator at Forum Mulher(major feminist network in Mozambique), and volunteer in GBV initiatives, for 6 years. At Forum Mulher co-facilitaded seminars on the domestic violence act to local magistrates/prosecutors and trainings on GBV to mens groups which was the ground for HOPEM foundation

Co-chair of the Youth Leaders Initiative, 2012, an initiative to strenghten the engagement/commitement of young leaders from civil society, private sector, religious organizations and government agencies in figthing GBV Member of the MenEngage Alliance steering comitee in Africa, which is a global network of UN Agencies, Country networks and NGOs working to engage men & boys for gender equality and erradication of GBV In 2011, trained 25 local NGOs in accountability monitoring of GBV national commitements using the CSA/Rhodes University approach to social accountability

Founding of a Mens network for gender equality and end of GBV as a result of increased awareness on the subject matter
Founding of the Mens March to end GBV and negative masculinities which has been growing year after year
Increased commitement and engagement of 40 male celebrities, journalists, TV presenters, politicians, members of parliament etc to address GBV and other womens discrimination in public

Creation of the first multistakeholder/multisectoral platform for coordination of GBV efforts and policy dialogue (GCCV) at national level, leaded by the Ministry of Women and Social Action, involving Un agencies, civil society organizations and government agencies
Increased awareness on GBV of at least 3000 african athletes and about 15 000 expectators at the All Africa Games held in Maputo, 2011 Implemented a multidisciplinary exhibition (including press reports on GBV, cartoons,videos, photos, campaign materials, instruments used in GBV etc) on masculinities and GBV which resulted in hundreds of people becoming aware of GBV

After spending a few nigths at the olimpic village during the All Africa Games, 2011, in order to meet teams that where in competition during most of day time, Julio & team (most of them university students usually wearing colourful campaign T-shirts) were often mistaken for different teams members and sometimes asked to produce comments on results
