Synopsis All nurses are leaders when they care for patients. They not only support the patients in doing what they are unable do for themselves, but also manage their care and lead them toward a vision and personal goal of better health. The concepts in this course focus on the necessary skills to manage the patient as well as a staff caring for an entire group of patients. Most all nurses find themselves in a position to lead a group of colleagues in a team or on a patient care unit. The concepts inherent in the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation) are applied and expanded when working with a group. Understanding the environment of care, including its vision, values and culture, is important. Implementing leadership and management strategiessuch as conflict and relationship management, coaching, delegation and evaluationis outlined and demonstrated in case examples. The objective of this course is to highlight the skills necessary to prepare nurses for their managerial roles confidently and enthusiastically.
