' Background Issue Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is a city with high population density. It is also a city of contrast. Sometimes we can see urban areas with modern civilization, skyscrapers, wealthy people with their own lifestyle. But in the other side, there are also urban areas with people who lived in poverty, bad environment, and jobless. This problem has recently became a major problem of the city. The differences between two societies create a boundaries for each other. The development of the city becomes unbalanced. Among the organized and developed area of the city, there are so many slum areas that give bad impact to the environment of the city. Current Condition So far, how the government solve the poverty problem is by forced eviction for the illegal poor people in slums. However, this way doesnt actually solve the poverty problem. Poor people only move, make a new slum area, and their lives remain poor. They remain a society that has no contribution to the city, and remain blocked by the boundaries created by their condition. Main Idea The basic problem in Jakarta city is: 1. People Live In Poverty 2. Slum Areas 3. The Boundary of Contrast between civilization 4. Major city problems such as daily needs and lack of energy and green areas Architecture intervention needed here to give some design strategy: 1. Human Resources Empowerment 2. Productive Facilities

3. Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Design From this design strategy, the outcome is: Urban Generator is designed as a public social housing integrated with agricultural and livestock units. It gives them a better place to live, and place to work and be productive. The products they produce, give them opportunity to reconnect with urban civilization through trade and marketing. Urban Generator become a sustainable solution for the city development. The programatic strategy for this program take some phase: 1. Action Phase Government take an action to people who live in poverty by doing Human Resources Empowerment. Government also have to make a slum areas purification to remove slums from the city. The result from human resources empowerment program is make a new quality human resources. 2. Improvement Phase After get empowerment program, the poor people are moved into new public facilities. That is Urban Generator. In Urban Generator, poor people get a better place to live, they also have a new activities with the vertical farming and livestock units facilities. As a residential occupants, they get a better life. 3. Production Phase The next phase is how the residents develop the grow of agricultural and farming activity in vertical farm and livestock units. The facilities can produce harvest and livestock. The products then become an trade in market facilities. 4. Contribution Phase The final phase, is how the residents run the market. The products give incomes for the residents. The market activities give them opportunity to give contribution to the city. They can become a real part of urban civilization with their contribution.

Site Selection The proposed site for design prototype is located in Kalibata, South Jakarta, DKI Jakarta, Indonesia. This place is located on the side of Ciliwung River. In Jakarta, mostly areas on the side of the Ciliwung River become a slum areas. Needs continuously repairs to restore this areas into clean and encironmentally friendly area. Project Analysis One module of Urban Generator, use 6400 sqm area. One module is able to accomodate 320 families, or about 1280 people. Site in Kalibata, has 32000 sqm area. So, 3 modules can be built there. From this number, we can consider about the future opportunity from this design. Future Projection If government can build 10 modules each years -in other words, helping 12.800 poor people every year-, government can reduce the number of poor by 50% in 10 years. Government can also restore the quality of urban space, as has eliminated 1.070.000 sqm slum areas. The Urban Generator The building consist of four main function. It is supported by one supporting unit. Each function doesn't work individually, each function have an interconnection to one another. The main function is: 1. Public Social Housing The first phase, is to provide a habitable dwelling. This residence also give a friendly neighborhood place for them, give them chances to socialized with neighbor. This place give a better social life for its occupants. 2. Vertical Farming Units Due to the scarcity and high prices of land in Jakarta, vertical farming become the best solution. The place is integrated with the public housing building. It makes the working system become more efficient and effective. By using a vertical farming system, residents can plant many kinds of

agricultural planting. The types of plants were chosen, in order to provide results that can be harvested throughout the year. Thus, the market for selling the crop can continue to run and residents can get continuous income. 3. Livestocks Units Due to the city daily needs, animal husbandry to produce livestock can be a potential line for business. Its existence is also a symbiotic mutualism with vertical farming and residential function. With proper management, these three functions will mutually support each another. The farmed animals are cows, goats, chicken, and ducks. Livestock area area also provide energy to support the entire bulding system through the animal waste processing into a biogas energy. In addition, animal waste is processed onto organic fertilizer for agricultural purposes. 4. Market and Distribution The harvest and livestock they produce, will be traded in market which is integrated with the building. It will become incomes for them. The next process is distributed their products into the city. Market area is used for trading the agricultural and livestock products. With the existence of the market, the products from the vertical farming and livestock is not only used for the benefit of residents only, but also useful for the urban community. 5. Supporting Building Unit Supporting building provide facilities for supporting energy consumption of the building. The design is a infinity loop of energy. Every functions support each other. Based on that, the buildings have a working system. This building system gives an opportunity to each function for maximized its performance. If the building functions working properly, the design will become a new life for the poor people. The improvement of their quality of life, also will become an improvement for the urban civilization of the city. Environmentally Results Reduce the amount of slum areas in Jakarta
