IMPROVEMENTS TO BUCHANAN * Hit the gym. Try to schedule regular ROAD STARTED
By Kyle Leppek Pioneer Staff Writer workouts around your blocks of exam studying time to help keep stress in check. If you are on a sports team, you may still have practices during exam time, but if not, make plans with teammates to do some conditioning. Go for a run, shoot hoops or lift some weights.
MORTON TWP. Preliminary work has started on a more than $1 million project to improve Buchanan Road. Morton Township and Austin Township entered into a contract with the Mecosta County Road Commission earlier this month to completely overhaul almost the entirety of the road that runs through Canadian Lakes. The project is estimated to nish later this year. The road will be improved from 105th Avenue in Morton Township to 150th Avenue in Austin Township. A section of 155th Avenue between Buchanan Road and Pierce Road and a small section of 100th Avenue north of Buchanan Road also will be improved. The total cost of the project will be paid for by the townships, county and with a federal grant. Morton Township is will pay $178,000, Austin Township will pay $278,829, the road commission will pay $275,000 and an additional $360,000 in the form of a safety grant was awarded to the project by the Federal Highway Administration. Culvert and tree trimming work has started on Buchanan Road and 155th Avenue and is expected to be completed by May 14. During that time, temporary closures, mostly west of Timberlane Drive, can be expected. Buchanan Road will be closed at 130th Avenue from May 2 to 11 while the hill is reshaped. However, Timberlane Drive should not be affected. From May 21 to 25, the road will be repaved, including 100th Avenue north of Buchanan. Shoulder work will continue until June 7. Between Sept. 3 and roughly Nov. 1, Buchanan Road will be shut down between Alpine Road and Timberlane Drive to work on the safety grant portion of the project. Buchanan Road will be accessable from East Royal Road, Manitoba Lane and Winnipeg Lane. An additional temporary entrance off of Buchanan Road, east of Alpine Road also is being explored. Morton Township supervisor Jim Quinlan said he will be available to address questions or concerns about the project by e-mail at supervisor@ mortontownship.org.
If youre on your own for exercise and the weather outside is frightful, try an indoor dance or yoga class, or an exercise video or DVD that you can do in your room. * Have a snack. Its hard to concentrate if your stomach is growling, but hold off on the celebratory drinks until after exams are over. Instead, have some energy-boosting snacks on hand while studying, such as trail mix or energy bars. Stay hydrated, too. * Get some air. Does your exam stress mean hours in the library or lab? Go out and walk around the building, or around the block. Clearing your head and getting your eyes away from the screen can work wonders. * Avoid all-nighters. Sometimes an all-night study session is inevitable, but dont underestimate the value of sleep in keeping exam stress under control. If you have multiple exams in the same week, several days with little sleep will leave you even more stressed. Dont overdo the caffeine, and try to plan your sleep as you plan your exam study schedule. However, if your child is fussy, spitting up or vomiting, it can be challenging to get them to take a full and proper oral dose of liquid acetaminophen. Be sure to have FeverAll Acetaminophen Suppositories (www. feverall.com) in your medicine cabinet for instances when sick infants and children cant or wont take liquid acetaminophen orally. FeverAll Infants Strength (80 mg) is the only acetaminophen suppository available and approved for infants as young as six months of age. Youll be able to condently dose acetaminophen with ease and know that your child received the proper dose for their age, even as young as six months old. * Dole out the Love: A little extra TLC can help keep kids comfy and in a positive state of mind as they ght a fever. Show your love through the power of touch with a gentle massage to your childs feet, neck or back. For extra security, have a brand-new soft lovey or blanket ready to go as a special new delight.

College visits should start percolating in the parental and student lobes toward the end of junior year and the start of senior year. Road trips may be necessary, and several at that. The most comprehensive virtual tours, G-chats and online scouring simply cannot replace the experience of seeing real dorm rooms or eating in actual dining halls. As any tooth-and-nails journalist will tell you about a hot story, parents should have a strategy for visiting college campuses and getting the most out of each tour. Prepare to be schooled by Dr. Richard Bavaria, senior vice president of education outreach for tutoring authority Sylvan Learning. * Cast a wide net. If your high-schooler hasnt done so already, help them compile a list of potential universities. Ask what aspects of college life -- sports, extracurriculars, campus/enrollment size, dorm life, religious afliations, academic strengths and offerings -- are important to them and use those criteria. Mark choices as dream, target and safety schools based on your childs academic performance and test scores. The initial list can be pared down to a realistic number of colleges to visit. * Get SAT/ACT prep support. If some of the dream schools seem out of range due to unsatisfactory test scores, get your student SAT help from the local Sylvan Learning (www.sylvanlearning. com) tutoring experts. The level of competition to get into top schools is more intense than ever. The number of early admission applications has increased dramatically, with some universities seeing doubledigit jumps. To begin the college process, most students applying to competitive colleges now take the SAT/ACT more than once, says Bavaria. * Go while college is in session. Weekends and holidays can be dead zones for college life, which wont give your student a real glimpse of the campus. Call ahead to schedule tours, and make sure college is in session and students are attending classes so potential applicants see the whole experience. * Ask smart questions. Encourage your kid to question everyone -- students, professors, advisors, librarians, coaches and more. Ask the same questions of different students and professors to compare answers. Parents, remember to hit key topics that students might forget, like nancial aid and safety. You can usually trust them to inquire about food selection and social activities.

COCKROACHES MAY BE PRIMARY ALLERGEN CULPRIT
(NewsUSA) - Allergy season is in full swing in many parts of the nation as spring sprung much earlier than usual. However, pollen may not be the only culprit behind watery eyes and sneezing ts. Few people know that cockroaches can trigger allergies and cause asthma in children. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) reports that one in ve children in the United States has severe sensitivities to cockroach allergens, while the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has found that 78 to 98 percent of urban homes have cockroach problems. Cockroach allergens in homes are the result of cockroach saliva and droppings and the decomposing bodies of these pests. Allergic reactions vary from skin rashes to congestion to asthma attacks. Since children are more sensitive to asthma attacks, and asthma is one of the leading causes of school absenteeism, its especially important to keep homes free of cockroaches. When most people think of allergy and asthma triggers, they probably think of pollen, pet hair and dust rst and do not think of cockroaches, says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. However, cockroaches contribute to indoor allergies and are known to trigger asthma attacks with an increased incidence in small children.
In addition to being a culprit of allergies and asthma, cockroaches spread 33 kinds of bacteria including E. coli and salmonella, six parasitic worms and more than seven other types of human pathogens. The NPMA offers these cockroachprevention tips for families: * Vacuum often to reduce accumulation of cockroach allergens. * Put garbage in sealed containers, and dispose of it regularly to avoid attracting pests. * Check under sinks and appliances regularly. * Keep all food in sealed containers to prevent infestations. * Properly ventilate basements and crawl spaces to prevent moisture. * Seal cracks and holes around utility pipes that enter the home to prevent easy access for cockroaches. * If you nd signs of a cockroach infestation, contact a licensed pest professional to inspect and treat the pest problem. To learn more about cockroaches, pest management or nding a local pest professional, visit www.pestworld.org.
Enough said. Not Worth It: Major bath renovations. Whatever you do might not suit the buyer, says ONeill, and meanwhile, youd have spent as much as tens of thousands of dollars. Meaning, stick to things like repairing cracked shower doors, and save your visions of a modern-day spa for your own new abode. Worth It: Ripping up old carpeting. Whether you replace it with new carpets or renish the underlying wood oor is less important than getting rid of an eyesore. Not Worth It: Major kitchen renovations. Same taste issue as above. Worth It: Anything that enhances curb appeal. If the rst thing prospective buyers notice even before exiting their cars is that your roof looks like its been whipped by a tornado, say, chances are youve already lost the sale. Its a huge turn-off, says ONeill, and makes buyers predisposed to nd even more things they dont like. So, if your roof needs replacing, check out the Value Collection Lifetime Designer Shingles from GAF (the largest roong manufacturer in North America), which have the look of luxury shingles but at very affordable prices (www.gaf.com). Not Worth It: Anything that screams clutter. The less of you there is, the more likely prospective buyers are to imagine themselves happily living there.
(NewsUSA) - Okay, dont panic. If youre one of those homeowners whos been moaning about how hard its been trying to sell your house, your bargaining power -- you remember that concept, right? -- hasnt been completely devastated just because a ood of new foreclosures is expected to hit the market as a result of the recent $25 billion robo-signing mortgage settlement. In fact, while studies have shown your own property value could take up to another 4 percent hit if youre within a quarter mile of a foreclosure ultimately snapped up at auction or taken back by the lender, the thing to remember is this: Most buyers today are only interested in homes that are move-in-ready, so if yours isnt ... well, theres your problem. Buyers generally look at as-is properties that need work, and say Ill pass, says Patsy ONeill, a sales associate with Sothebys in Montclair, N.J. Thats why I tell clients its worth making certain strategic xes if theyre looking for quicker and more protable sales. So, which xes are worth it, and which arent? Read on: Worth It: Addressing major maintenance and safety issues. Would you buy a house with faulty electrical wiring?
