ot many of us know and understand the power and influence of African-American people in the community. A significant number of blacks may be ranked among the poorest, but black buying power is expected to reach $1.1 trillion by 2015, according to the State of the African-American Consumer Report. The study also found that the percentage of black people attending college or earning a degree has increased to 44 percent for men and 53 percent for women, and the number of black households earning $75,000 or higher grew by almost 64 percent. These are positive signs that growth in social influence and household income will continue to impact the black community's economic power.

Oh Yendi-pregnant and not married ! dont! and was not married. Her baby daddy, Daniel Chino McGregor, son of singing legend Freddie McGregor, proudly posted pictures of her belly for the world to see on Facebook and in the newspapers. Now, far be it for me to judge, but I must admit that I am a bit disappointed by this move. Let me be clear about my statement, as I am not disappointed about the new life which will come to this earth in a few months; however, I am a bit disappointed that she is not married. She is viewed as a role model to many of the young girls, not only in Jamaica but also around the world. It begs me to ask a further question of course, which is, should public figures private lives be scrutinized and examined to the highest degree when they make mistakes? To go even further with this question, is it really any of our business what they do? Far be it for me to judge Miss Phillips on the upcoming birth of her child, as I myself had a child out of wedlock when I was in my early twenties and paid dearly for that choice. Being a single mother is one of, if not the most, difficult job that one can ever imagine. I obviously do not know the circumstances under which this pregnancy has come about, whether or not it was planned, an accident, or if there are plans to marry in the future. What I am positive of though, is that over 72 percent of black babies born in the U.S. are born out of wedlock, and shockingly, Jamaica is on the top of the list of countries where children are born out of wedlock. What does this pregnancy say to the young women of Jamaica? What will their reaction be? The world, including Jamaica, has shown their disapproval, as many folks have made very derogatory comments about this union and the pregnancy over the last few days. These negative statements are all uncalled for in my opinion, but I do understand the disappointment, as it really does feel as if we have been kicked in the gut by this news. To be quite honest though, I do have to play devils advocate here and then also ask, who cares if Yendi Phillips is pregnant and not married? It is none of our concern correct, even if she is in the public eye, although she is a celebrity of sorts, her private life is her private life. I, who certainly am nowhere near the level of Yendi Phillips in regards to celebrity status, often feel the sting of a strangers cruel and mistaken judgement of me. They, of course, have never met me and do not know me on a personal level. The rumors that circle around about me sometimes are almost on the borderline of being placed on Anderson Coopers The Ridiculous list that he airs on CNN each night. I am damned if I do and damned if I

Americans invested millions with companies owned by people of other cultures, while the blackowned are ignored. African-Americans are the target market for everybody, but no matter how good a black lawyer is, for example, he could not successfully survive in a predominantly white community. He cannot target or market to other cultures. We are not promoting or advocating any form of discrimination against any businesses based on race or culture of the owners or operators. However, a community of wealthy people is as strong as the person with the lowest income and least opportunity. Therefore, in order for any community to achieve prolong growth, the people must support each others business. In order words, keep the business in the family.

I then have no choice but to examine Yendi Phillips current situation and wish her nothing but the best of luck. Of course, my thoughts go to her and her unborn child, as I wish her a great pregnancy and a healthy birth. In the same breath, however, I also do have to encourage the young women of Jamaica to not look at either Yendi, Sandy or
down. Look neither to me nor Yendi Phillips as role models to live your own lives, as we are nothing but human beings, fraught with mistakes and bad choices. The great thing is that each day gives us another opportunity to turn our lives around, if we ever go down the wrong path in life.

refunds to which he was not entitled. It is also alleged that Goldberg falsely claimed to have derived his income as a city of New York employee when, in fact, Goldbergs employment with the city had ended in 2003. Goldberg was released on his own recognizance by Criminal Court Judge Gia Morris, although the people had requested that bail be set in the amount of $250,000 because the defendant has a strong motivation to flee the jurisdiction. Among the arguments made in asking for high bail was that the defendant is also the subject of a wider tax fraud investigation by the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, the Internal Revenue Service and the Bronx District Attorneys Office. The people also cited the defendants admission that he had earned over $500,000 in fees this year for preparing tax returns for more than 2,500 clients.

Once outside, Nowillo observed Cherry standing in front of his house located at 39-24 Crescent Street banging and kicking his car. When Nowillo told Cherry to leave the defendant punched Nowillo numerous times, then grabbed and threw him to the ground, where he then proceeded to kick and punch him multiple times, causing his death. eauty Queen Baby Mama Drama is hardly new to Jamaica nor the Caribbean. Unmarried queens have been quietly having their babies for decades, long before Facebook. Sometimes the pregnancies were met with raised eyebrows and other times nobody seemed to notice. But our neighbor, Trinidad & Tobago, stopped in freeze-frame in 2006 when their unmarried Miss Universe 1998 Wendy Fitzwilliam suddenly announced her pregnancy. Worse, she refrained from immediately naming a baby father. "Apparently, the news of my pregnancy is carried in every news outlet in the country", Wendy later wrote in a tell-all book, Letters to Ailan, as she described the turbulent relationship she shared with her son's Jamaican father. The following year, in 2007, twenty-two-year-old Miss Jamaica World Sara Lawrence relinquished her title in Kingston due to pregnancy. Today in Jamaica, years later, people are stunned at the announced pregnancy of Yendi Phillips, first runner-up in the Miss Universe 2010 pageant. Comments on social media suggest Yendi's pregnancy should have been preapproved by majority vote in CARICOM, the government, the opposition, trade unions and the Jamaica

Council of Churches. She is, of course, a grown woman and she is free to make her own choices. Some people blame hypocrisy for the wave of negative comments on Yendi's out -of-wedlock pregnancy. I disagree. I think that deep down in the collective Jamaican psyche, there is a decades-old hunger for a royal Jamaican wedding one with two glittering celebrities, horse and carriage traveling over hills and gullies, a wedding reminiscent of the magic of the Michael Manley and Beverly Anderson union in the 70s. We've seen Charles and Diana, Prince William and Kate Middleton but Jamaicans crave their own homegrown once-in-a-lifetime endless love. Older people want to see such a wedding unfold before they die, and Yendi and Asafa were excellent candidates for the fairy tale that would have made the perfect script, one that you'd only otherwise find on the stage of an LTM pantomime. Older folks and seasoned lovers know that truth can be stranger than fiction and any card can play in the future, including the Asafa card. But in the meantime, the search continues for that lavish fantasy Jamaican wedding that will make the country stop. -diademata@aol.com

recent U.S. Government study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration has found that one in ten children live with an alcoholic mother or father. This equates to about 7.5 million children, which is 10.5% children under the age of 18. Furthermore, the study found that 6.1 million children live in a two-parent household, while 1.4 million children live in a single-parent household. These numbers have lasting implications for U.S. children. Living with an alcoholic parent can cause many problems for children. Alcoholic parents who are unable to perform household responsibilities may leave the burden to their child. In return, children of alcoholic parents hold responsibilities well beyond what is typical for a child under 18. When a child assumes the adult parent role in the household there is clearly a role reversal between parent and child. The child gives up his/her personal needs in order to take care of the needs of the parent(s). A

child will often forsake his/her own needs for comfort, attention and guidance in order to accommodate the parents emotional and personal needs. Children of alcoholic parents may learn unhealthy coping mechanisms. Children may model the behavior of their parent and turn to alcohol as they get older in order to deal with stress or cope with personal problems. It has been found that children of parents with an untreated alcohol disorder are at greater risk for developing alcohol problems in their own lives. In extreme instances, alcoholic parents could be verbally, physically or sexually abusive towards their child. An alcoholic parent poses many dangers to their childs well-being. It is important for public health services to offer public education and intervention in an effort to decrease the number of alcoholic parents in the country. Also, schools should have information and help available for children who are living under such circumstances.

enator Charles Schumer is pushing legislation to block interest rate hikes on student loans nationwide. The bill would delay a July 1 interest rate increase on federally subsidized Stafford Loans. Passage of the legislation would extend the current rate of 3.4 percent for another year, which Congress lowered back in 2007. If not, the rates would jump to 6.8 percent. Undergraduates could end up paying at least $3,000 more over a 10-year repayment period if Congress does not act. Eight million students nationwide currently receive the loans.

Dear Divine Diva: y ex-husband likes to call to ask me for advice. Our most recent conversation was in regard to his girlfriend and her sexual past, which he knew about before they started dating. He now disapproves of her history and he began calling her unpleasant names. He tells me he deserves better but intends to stay with her until he gets bored. Hearing this sort of talk gives me a stomachache and heartburn. I feel terrible for the woman. I want to be a friend to my ex, but I'm not sure I can handle the stress it causes. He has had a hard life, and I didn't make it any easier by divorcing him. Is the only solution not to take his calls, like my friends tell me? I'm not sure I can do that without major guilt. -Sandra, The Bronx Dear Sandra: I'll offer another option: The next time your ex starts asking you for relationship advice, tell him you don't like hearing the way he talks about his girlfriend. Explain that it makes you so uncomfortable that you prefer to avoid the topic of his love life. If he respects your wishes, continue taking his calls. If not, because you find them upsetting, refuse them. And please, stop feeling guilty about the divorce. From your description of your former husband, he is a user, and you're lucky to be rid of him.

nfidelity isn't a single, clearly defined situationand what's considered infidelity varies among couples and even between partners in a relationship. What may be acceptable for some couples may be unacceptable for others. Similarly, what's tolerable for one partner in a relationship may be intolerable for the other. Many factors can contribute to infidelity, from low self-esteem or discontent with the marriage to addiction to sex, love or romance. Generally, a person who's having an affair: Experiences a strong sexual attraction to someone other than his or her partner. Keeps the relationships a secret, often resorting to lies and deception. Feels a stronger emotional connection to the person with whom he or she is having an affair than to his or her partner.
Dear Divine Diva: attend a church with about 200 worshippers. The church provides a supervised nursery for infants up to 3 years of age. Most parents with babies use it. However, one couple has a 2-year-old child and a 5-month-old baby. These parents do not take advantage of the nursery, but keep the kids in the sanctuary. Last Sunday the baby, who was in the father's arms, cried during most of the service. The parents may be able to tune it out, but many of us were very distracted by the wailing. The father is a schoolteacher. I couldn't help but wonder how this teacher would handle a student who caused such a disruption in his classroom.
I don't think he would tolerate an hour of loud crying from anyone. Why don't these people understand their behavior prevents others from worshipping as they would like? -Quiet, Please Dear Quiet Please: That's a good question, and one I recommend you pose to the person who was conducting the service. Out of consideration for the congregation, he or she should "remind" the parents that the nursery is available, and stress that in the future it be used to prevent the problem from recurring because the disruption caused "so many complaints." -Always, Divine Diva
discussions with your partner until you can have a constructive conversation. Mendi ng a bro ken marri ag e Recovering from an affair is a difficult and ongoing process. Still, it's possible to survive an affair. Consider these steps to promote healing: Be accountable. If you were unfaithful, take responsibility for your actions. End the affair, and stop all interaction or communication with the person. Be honest. Once the initial shock is over, discuss what happened openly and honestly no matter how difficult talking or hearing about the affair may be. Consider shared goals. It may take time to sort out what's happened and to consider whether your relationship can heal. If you share a goal of reconciliation, realize that recovering the marriage will take time, energy and commitment.

Simple carbohydrates are sugars that your body can use quickly to get immediate energy. However, because your body puts them to work so fast, once immediate energy needs are met, all excess simple sugars are converted to fat. These types of carbohydrates are found in milk products, fruits and foods sweetened
Complex carbohydrates take longer to digest, therefore giving the body a steady supply of energy without building fat! These can be found in whole grains (ex. whole wheat bread and brown rice), starchy vegetables, nuts and beans. About 50% of the calories that adults consume should come from carbohydrates, mostly whole grains, beans, low-fat milk products and veggies!

he beauty of a home-based business operation is that you do not have to pay extra for rent or mortgage. If you are the parent of young children, you can monitor their welfare while still making money out of your home. You also save on traveling time and transportation costs. Setting up your office, may you live in an apartment or home, is a fun challenge. You should designate a specific area for your business may this be the basement, attic, a spare bedroom, the garage or a part of your living room. This writer, particularly, does not suggest the bedroom or kitchen for your business operation. Especially if you are not alone. You will need file cabinets, an answering machine, a desk with chairs, a phone system, a computer with printer and a calculator. Yes, you should have office stationery, business cards, file folders, postage stamps, invoice forms and a receipt book. Proper lighting and adequate space for your inventory or merchandise is also important. Having a successful home-based business is a goal of many individuals, but there are also challenges in running a homebased business. Dealing with family needs, domestic demands and concerns. A designated space or area to meet and greet customers. Having business hours that are convenient to your customers or clients, but respecting your neighbors. services, secretarial needs, shipping tasks and certain computer-related tasks. Businesses that tend to work well in a home environment are writing services, public relations, craft businesses, artists, accountants and bookkeepers, computer services, catering and tutoring. Serviceoriented businesses tend to be a good fix for home-based business. Home-based businesses should not generate major sounds our noises (like in repairs), create odors or aromas, or have too much customer traffic. These concerns result in certain zoning regulations against home-based businesses. Remember, even if your business is home-based, it should be perceived as professional and effectiveits not a hobby! If your business becomes very successful and you are pressed for more spaces, you have two options, you can get a larger apartment or house. Another option is that you can leave the home-based business environment for a show room, professional office space, warehouse or factory.
