Issue 57

Compilation and dissemination of Foreign Trade Statistics (FTS) is one of the core activities of
Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). Considering the importance of FTS, BBS has been
compiling and publishing it on an annual basis since 1973-74. Since February 2007, BBS has
been publishing Monthly Advance Release on FTS to satisfy the users need. It is an outcome
of the BBS efforts towards the improvement of FTS.
This monthly release is based on the data available from National Board of Revenue (NBR) and
Bangladesh Bank (BB). NBR provides export and import data on goods while BB provides such
data on services. We are thankful to NBR and BB which have continued to help us in providing
data in bringing out this publication.
Data presented in this publication are provisional and subject to revision. All these provisional
data will be subsequently reviewed and revised. The revised data will be presented in the
upcoming issues.
I firmly believe this publication will play a significant role as an effective market research tool to
planners, policy makers, researchers, the business community and others. Comments and
suggestions from users regarding any inclusion, omission or presentation of data for
improvement of the publication are most welcome.

Total Trade (Goods & Services)

In Oct, 2011, total exports and imports of goods and services were recorded at Tk.170.38 billion
and Tk.321.45 billion respectively resulting in a trade deficit of goods and services of Tk.151.07
billion. The exports in Oct, 2011 were Tk.46.55 billion lower than that in Sep, 2011 and the
imports in Oct, 2011 were Tk.24.11 billion higher than that in Sep, 2011.
Goods
In Oct, 2011, the trade deficit for goods appeared to Tk.126.51 billion as against Tk.149.16
billion in Sep, 2011. The exports of goods in Oct, 2011 have increased by 37.42% over against
that in Sep, 2011 and the imports of goods in Oct, 2011 have decreased by 6.85% as compared to
that in Sep, 2011.The export of goods in Oct, 2011 is Tk.147.79 billion as against Tk. 118.74
billion in Oct, 2010. The import of goods in Oct, 2011 is Tk.274.30 billion as against Tk.162.77
billion in Oct, 2010.
Services
In Oct, 2011, the trade deficit for services decreases to Tk.24.56 billion as against Tk.24.35
billion in Sep, 2011. The exports of services in Oct, 2011 have increased by 38.67% over against
JSep, 2011 and the imports of services in Oct, 2011 have increased by 16.01% as compared with
that in Sep, 2011. The export of services in Oct, 2011 is Tk.22.59 billion which was Tk.18.12
billion in Oct, 2010. The import of services in Oct, 2011 is Tk.47.15 billion as against Tk.26.30
billion in Oct, 2010.
Three months Moving Average of exports and imports
For the three months ending in Sep, 2011 the moving average of exports of goods and services
was Tk.162.24 billion, while the moving average of imports of goods and services was
Tk.287.94 billion resulting in an average trade deficit of Tk. 125.70 billion. For the three months
ending in Aug, 2011 the average trade deficit was Tk. 96.79 billion, reflecting average exports of
Tk. 168.84 billion and average imports of Tk. 265.63 billion.
