Given an Adinkra, the corresponding representation of the supersymmetry algebra is given by the formula: QI = upI + J IJ downJ, where upI and downJ mean following the edge with color I or J up or down, with a sign if the edge is dashed, or 0 if the edge with that color is in the wrong direction. Example. The 4-dimensional chiral Adinkra (at left). In 4-dimensional spacetime, with N=4, the matrix is:
!1
!2
!3
!4
IJ 1 2 3 4
1 t+z 0 x y
2 0
3 x
4 y x 0 tz
t+z +y +y tz x 0
The supersymmetry algebra (without central charges) is represented by N first order linear differential operators Q1,...,QN exchanging bosons and fermions, satisfying the supersymmetry relations: QI QJ + QJ QI = 2 IJ, where is a Lorentz-equivariant symmetric matrix of spacetime derivatives. " Example. 1dimensional N=1 supersymmetry. The boson is (t), and the fermion is (t). The supersymmetry relation is just Q2 = t, and it is represented by the operator Q, with ! Q (t) = (t) and Q (t) = t (t).
In terms of the linear combination 1Q1+2Q2+3Q3+4Q4, the supersymmetry action on the fields is given by: A11+22+33+44, B+12+21+3443, 11(t+z)A+2(t+z)B+3(FxA+yB)+4(G+yA+xB), 21(t+z)B+2(t+z)A+3(G+xB+yA)+4(FyB+xA), 31(F+xA+yB)+2(G+yAxB)+3(tz)A4(tz)B, 41(G+xByA)+2(F+yB+xA)+3(tz)B+4(tz)A, F1((t+z)3+x1y2) + 2((t+z)4+y1+x2) + 3(x3y4+(tz)1) + 4(y3x4+(tz)2), G1((t+z)4x2y1) + 2((t+z)3y2+x1) + 3(x4+y3(tz)2) + 4(y4+x3+(tz)1).
Gates Fundamental Supersymmetry Challenge is a 30 year old problem: to classify all possible superpartner pairings (now expressed as Adinkras), and in particular those with N=16 or N=32 supersymmetric directions, which may shed light on superstring and M-theory. We are tackling it both theoretically, combining physical methods with graph theory and abstract algebra, as well as computationally, with the aid of a supercomputer.
