Objectives: Students will be able to effectively define literary terms. Students will be able to pick out literary techniques from a song/poem. Students will work with technology in a fun and interesting manner to help

understand the material. Students will not only be able to know the definitions of a term but also be able to give an example of that technique as well. Introduction: The lesson will start off with looking at a Literary Technique Study Guide while also listening to the song Concrete Jungle by Bob Marley. The students will already be familiar with these literary devices prior to this class. Students will have to pick out the literary devices that is used in the song. This lesson will be a fun way to get into poetry because many students think negatively about poetry yet everyone seems to love music. Students can begin to see that music is a form of poetry and we can ease into the unit. Motivator: After listening to the Bob Marley song and effectively picking out the literary devices in it, the students will get to use their computer to play a fun and engaging basketball game while also learning the techniques and definitions of each. This will get students engaged with the activity and while having fun and learning at the same time. Provide Information: Students will be given a Literary Techniques Study Guide which has the definitions and examples of each device. We will go over different techniques and devices that is in the song and if students have any questions we will discuss them. Students will also play a review game on the computer where the terms and definitions will again be provided for them so that these terms will become engrained into their memory this time in a fun and engaging way. Provide Practice: After the song has been played, students will work with a partner and find literary techniques in the song. The Literary Technique Study Guide will provide not only a definition, but examples as well so students have a better idea of what the technique is and what it does. We will then collaborate and

discuss any problems or questions that they had with the terms. Students will then individually go onto the review game on their computers and complete the ten question game. Students will be given a term and then have 4 definitions to choose from, or vise versa. If students are confused or need help, I will go around and guide them. Provide Knowledge of the Result: After students are done with the online review game, I will have students give their own example of each literary technique. Students should now know the definition, but it is important for them to not only point out the technique from a song, but also show that they understand the definition by creating their own. If this is not completed during class time, it will be due the next day in class. To start the next class, a Literary Technique quiz will be given to the students so I can test their knowledge and understanding of the material to go further into our poetry lesson. Review the Activity: After doing the game, students will have to write a sentence for each definition so that I know they understand the material. This will be handed in at the end of class, or if it is not finished it will be assigned for homework and due the next day. Method of Assessment: A quiz will be given the next day to test their knowledge of literary techniques. Before I move deeper into the poetry unit, I want to make sure students have a clear understanding of these techniques. If there are any questions or problems with the quiz after it is given, we will go over them and then move on into the poetry unit.
