There is a 5 enrolment deposit per course on blue and yellow courses, for non fee paying learners, which will be refunded on completion of the full course. The course key will show you which courses you can get free, which have discounts available, and which you will need to pay for. Many of our courses are funded by the Skills Funding Agency which means that they cost you less.

These are our full cost courses. There are no concessions or discounts. Most of these courses are 6 per hour unless stated below: Dance Classes are 5 per hour per couple Exercise classes are 5 per hour

These courses are FREE for everyone as long as you meet our funding bodys eligibility criteria ask at any centre for details

Health

I started my ESOL course at Newcastle City Learning about 2 years ago. At that time my big problem was speaking English and understanding what people said. My ESOL tutors helped me to focus on these skills and I have made a great deal of progress in two years, moving from Entry 3 to level 2. My ESOL class at Westgate is almost like a small international society where the learners learn about each others countries, cultures and customs. We are good friends, all coming from different countries and learning English together. My ESOL class has given me a lot of confidence, provided me with many opportunities and helped me to become part of British society.

Support for your learning

Support for your learning
When you sign up for a class, you are asked to fill in an enrolment form. This gives us all the information we need to contact you and the details we need for our funding body (the cost of your course is subsidised by them). But it is also an opportunity for you to tell us about the support you may need to help you with your course. You will be asked if you consider yourself to have a disability, learning difficulty or health problems. The information you give us if you say yes will only be shared with those who need to know, like your tutor. They can then discuss your needs with you, and put things in place, where possible, to make it easier for you to succeed. Disclosing this information to us as soon as possible also gives us the best chance of getting these arrangements in place for the start of your course. We also ask everyone if they would find learning easier with support such as help with English and maths, careers guidance and course expenses and have specialist tutors who can help. For example, we can offer dyslexia support and a limited amount of funding available to help pay for your books and equipment and travel costs. We may also be able to help with your childcare or signpost you to where you can get help. By giving us as much information as you can, we will work with you in confidence to give you the best possible chance to do well. How do I enrol?
As well as calling into our centres in person or contacting them by phone, you can now ring this freephone number (0800 073 0911) and we can book your place with your payment. You can now enrol online for lots of courses too at www.newcastle.gov.uk/lifelonglearning

Do I need to bring identification?

Please bring along a form of ID such as your passport, driving licence, NI card or bank/credit or debit card. Ask your centre for details of what we can accept. If you can get our over 60s or concessionary rate, please bring proof when you sign up for the course. Depending on your reasons for getting the discounted rate, you may need to bring your benefit book etc. Please also have your date of birth and National Insurance number as well.

Financial Support and childcare

We have some money available to help people on low incomes to study. Learner Support Funds (LSF) may be available to help with your course fees, travel costs, childcare, books and equipment. This applies to blue banded courses only. To qualify you must: claim an income based benefit and/or have a household income of less than 15,276 To claim assistance with your childcare costs your child or children must be under 15 years of age, and being cared for by a registered childminder or nursery.

Our refunds policy

If you sign up for a course and it is cancelled before classes start or up to week five of the course, you will get a full refund. If a course has been running for more than five weeks of study when it is cancelled, you will get some of your fee back. We may also give partial refunds if you have to stop taking the course for a medical or employment reason. You will need to give us either a doctor's note or a letter from your employer. If you decide to withdraw from a course before you start, or part way through, we will decide whether you can have a refund. This depends on when you have let us know you don't want to continue and why you don't want to go on.

Family Learning encourages families to become involved in their children's learning. It gives mums, dads, carers and grandparents the chance to learn new skills and help children learn in a fun and friendly way. All courses and workshops are free and are delivered in schools, children's centre, libraries and community settings.

If you get financial assistance but decide to leave before the course ends you may have to repay the money. Check with your centre to see if you can get support as there are other conditions too.

Paying in instalments
You can pay for your course in up to 4 instalments. Please ask for details.

Please note, if you withdraw from a course and are paying by instalments, you will still need to pay your remaining instalments, unless this refund policy applies.

What kind of things can I learn?

There are a wide range of opportunities on offer and include Family Literacy, Family Numeracy, Keeping up with the Children, Computing, Story Sacks, Family Health, Art and Craft, Family Football, Family Languages (French and Spanish), Its Only Words, Family Literacy and Count on Me, Family Numeracy and lots more! Courses vary from 2-3 hours, 9-12 hours, 20 hours, 30 hours and even 60 hours and some can even offer you the opportunity to gain National Skills for Life Qualifications and Accreditation.

What can I do next?

Parents can continue on to further adult learning opportunities and training for employment. Some of our parents have successfully gone on to gain employment in schools and children's centres.

Level 4 and Level 5

We are now offering Level 4 and 5 Teaching qualifications CTLLS and DTLLS.

Advanced (Level 3)
You would require the Level 2 qualification or equivalent experience

Meet Matthew Forster, our Business Administration apprenctice. In 2009 Matthew began an apprenticeship in Business Administration. In one year he completed Level 2 of the course and has now moved up to the advanced level.
Matthews role is to support the day to day running of our busy office. He gets involved in making sure that we have the right supplies and resources and helps to answer customer enquiries and lots more. Matthew has worked so hard that he was recently awarded Support Worker of the Year in our annual education awards.
