Were Celebrating 45 Years!

Pro -C
Its our 45th anniversary, and were celebrating! In honor of this awesome event, were aiming to get 45 donors signed up as monthly sustainers at $4.50 or more a month. Thats less than most people spend a week on fancy coffee! Were also looking for 45 brand new donors to give a gift thats meaningful to them by July 30, 2012. How can you help? You can become a monthly sustainer today or tell someone about us. Together, well continue to defend and advance sexuality, including reproductive choice, for another 45 years!

Spring 2012 Update

How MisinforMation about abortion restricts access
Our abortion assistance fund helps pay for abortions, and we do this with donations from people like you. With your support, were able to help a wide variety of women and girls get the health care they seek. Recently, a member of our education staff was teaching a sexuality education class at a local, alternative high school. After the presentation, a student named Onieka (name changed) approached our educator and told her that she was 12 weeks pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Onieka said she was on Medical Assistance (MA), but when she called her case worker she was told that MA doesnt cover abortion. The case worker said, there are people out there who will help you raise your baby, and referred Onieka to a crisis pregnancy center. Onieka did not realize that crisis pregnancy centers are anti-choice and often lie to women and girls who are seeking abortion care. Therefore, she went to the center hoping to get help paying for an abortion; instead, she was referred to two more crisis pregnancy centers and told that she was too far along to get an abortion. Our educator was able to talk to Onieka about her rights and give her a list of resources, including information about our abortion assistance fund. Onieka was more than relieved to learn that MA does cover abortion, and that she was not too far along to have the legal medical procedure that we have fought and continue to fight for her to have. Unfortunately, this is a far too common story. Every day we talk to women and girls who are given misinformation about Medical Assistance and crisis pregnancy centers, because their social workers either dont know that abortion is covered as part of MA or they are allowing their personal beliefs to interfere with their professional responsibilities to provide women and girls accurate information on all of their pregnancy options. Our staff works hard to ensure that women and girls are aware of their rights, whether they decide to have an abortion, make an adoption plan or parent. Every day, we help people like Onieka understand and access their rights through our education programming, as well as by: helping people obtain Medical Assistance, referring people to legitimate and safe medical professionals, and finding people the money to pay for the abortions they seek. Were able to do all of this because of people like you. Thank you.
