Medical Students' Summit
The Association oI Philippine Medical
Colleges Student Network National Capital
Region (APMCSN-NCR), in partnership with the
Philippine Medical Association (PMA) and
Unila held the 4th Medical Students Summit at
the PMA Auditorium, North Avenue, Quezon
Cit last Septemer 19, 009 The theme oI the
said event was 'PUSH: DeIing limits, reaking
oundaries which Iocused on health liIestle
and wellness oI the medical students
The emcees Ior this occasion were Hans
Peter Esguerra Irom UST and Jeannette Daquinag
Irom PLM And the PMA president, Dr Re
Melchor F Santos, gave the opening remarks
Prominent doctors were invited as honorar guest
speakers to deliver lectures/demonstration on a
variet oI topics pertaining to this ears theme;
the likes oI Dr Cnthia Cuao-Juico, Dr Maricar
Limpin, Dr Oscar Tinio, Dr Romulo Jacinto De
Villa, Dr Maria Cristina Rees and Dr Dante
Simulan Jr
Nutrition, Health liIestle was delivered Dr Cnthia
Cuao-Juico, she started her talk energizing the medical
students through a dnamic exercise She shared aout the
Filipinos normal diet, the nutritional contents oI the
diIIerent processed Iood and drinks that medical students
usuall eat dail like pizza, urger, Irappuccino and other
trivia on nutrition
The next speaker, Dr Maricar Limpin talked aout
smoking She discussed the prevalence and eIIects oI
smoking and the diIIerent measures on how to give up
smoking She summarized her talk encouraging
phsicians as a role model to not smoke, advising the
cessation oI smoking and advocating on pulic health
policies on toacco control

The medical student participants oI the event were surveed
regarding their nutrition and liIestle Based on the surve results,
majorit oI them eats on Iast Iood twice a week, eats high sodium
(cookies and chips) dail, eats meat, vegetales, Iruits dail
Majorit oI those who tried to smoke, started smoking eIore
entering med school, this is also true on those who drank alcohol
Alcohol drinkers were said to drink onl on special occasions
The topic, Code oI Ethics, was discussed Dr Oscar Tinio He
talked aout the diIIerent ethical duties and responsiilities oI a
phsician as stated in the code oI ethics oI PMA He also stated
some oI the recent scandals that shocked the Filipino medical
communit such as the Vicente Sotto Canister Scandal and the
Haden ho scandals roup discussions on the Iirst three topics
were partaken the medical student and active participation was
seen among them
oga is one oI the Complementar and Alternative Methods was talked aout
Dr Dante Simulan Jr He discussed the importance oI oga in our od and his
personal oga journe He demonstrated and explained the importance oI some oI
the movements and techniques in oga which participated the medical students
Stress management techniques topic was introduced Dr Romulo
Jacinto S De Villa He shared his three Iormulas to manage stress
which are Spiritualit, proper Mind set through setting priorities, and
having a qualit od through proper nutrition He also shared some
nutritional advices like to avoid Iried and processed Ioods and eating
high Iier Ioods
The topic living a Health LiIestle was discussed Dr Maria
Christina Rees She talked aout her personal experiences with
regards to living a health liIestle that health lies in our hands She is
a lue elter taekwondo champion, a triathloner, a nutritionist doctor
and a mother She emphasized that tr to alance liIe with a constant
struggle and one should not wait Ior the 'time ut the one who will
make the 'time
