    Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards, 3 Grade, History Activity 2 Description/Rationale: After the students have chosen their US President that they will be researching in lesson 1 and created their timeline documenting the Presidents life they will create a Wordle http://www.wordle.com using their Presidents inaugural speech which can be found at this teacher approved website http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/inaugurals.php. After creating the Wordle the student will print the document to PDF using CUTEPDF and will save the file to their Evernote account to be used in the culminating unit project. Lastly the student will write a paragraph about their Wordle and describe which words were most important from the Presidents inaugural speech and why they think those words were important. Instructional/Behavioral Objectives: 1. To create a unique illustration based on a speech. 2. To write a insightful paragraph on standout words from their illustration. 3. Follow instructions to save information that will be used at the end of the unit. Procedures: Show students a website that has all of the inaugural speeches given by US Presidents. http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/inaugurals.php. Have students copy the speech and post into the Wordle image generator. Have students design their image changing the font, layout, color, and amount of words allowed in the image to their liking.

    Students will then print their Wordle to PDF using the CUTEPDF program and save the PDF for in their Evernote account for use in the culminating final lesson. Students will then write on a word document using Google Docs a paragraph about the design they chose for their Wordle and what words stand out and have most meaning for them about their chosen President. The student will save the Google Doc as a PDF and combine the document with their Wordle using a free online PDF merger http://foxyutils.com/mergepdf/. Once their document is combined they will submit their work to the teacher and upload the file to their Evernote account for use in the culminating final lesson.
