Mentor Resources Goal-Setting Worksheet

One of the most important steps that you can achieve before you begin your mentoring partnership is to set personal and professional goals. Goals give your partnership a map to follow so that your partnership will not only stay on track, but will also achieve the results you expect! In thinking through your goals, it is important to evaluate the competencies and skills needed for your current position and for future positions. Typical mentees report that they achieve their goals more quickly when working with a mentor. Therefore, you will want to set goals that exceed the partnerships time frame. We recommend the following: for a six month partnership, use short term to mid term goals (1 to 3 years) and for a year-long partnership, set long term goals (3 to 5 years) The Goal-Setting Worksheet is designed to help you identify your goals and objectives for your mentoring program. If you need to leave the system to think about your goals and objectives, you may login at any time thereafter to complete this worksheet and your registration.

Mentoring Action Plan (MAP)

Prior to participating in any mentoring partnership, it is important to break down goals for discussion with your mentoring partner into a Mentoring Action Plan or MAP. The MAP provides the framework for your partnership and keeps you on track to meet your goals. The following is a sample plan. Review this action plan and then create your own.

Goal 1: Managing multiple staff and motivating team

Identify the skills that are valued in managing and motivating teams in my organization. Observe a variety of managers who possess these characteristics. Identify three characteristics upon which I can work with my mentor. Integrate these characteristics into my work with my employees.

Mentoring Action Plan (MAP) Sample

Sarah Bloom is a medical doctor and has been recently hired to be the associate director of research and development at a pharmaceutical company. Prior to her position, Sarah spent ten years working at a private research foundation conducting clinical trials. In this position she was an managed a small staff of five. Now, Sarah has eight direct reports and staff responsibility for 25 people. Sarahs manager has told her that she needs to develop better presentation and strategic planning skills. Sarah is having a difficult time adjusting from being a manager of a small department to a manager of a large team. She also finds it challenging to motivate her staff. She works in a highly matrixed organization and finds it difficult to accomplish tasks with other departments.

Goal 2: Strategic Planning

Work with my mentor on my current strategic plan to identify gaps and areas of improvement. Read some sample and/or past strategic plans. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the plans. Modify current strategic plan and ask mentor to make suggestions for changes and additions.

Goal 3: Develop Presentation Skills

Ask my mentor to review one of my past presentations. Attend some lectures and presentations to learn about different styles. Make a videotape of a presentation for my mentor to view. Ask my mentor to offer constructive feedback. Practice the new presentation by adapting the suggestions from my mentor. Deliver it to my team or an industry association.

Short and Long Term Goals

Sarahs short term goal is to develop her management, strategic planning and presentation skills. Sarahs long term goal is to achieving the position of Director of the Research and Development.
