Spectrum KUEU2136 Assignments Tutorial 4: Gas Power Cycles

Question 1 An air standard cycle is executed in a closed system with 4 gram of air and consists of three processes shown in the figure. Process 1-2 is isentropic compression from 100 kPa and 27 degree Celsius to 1.0 Mpa. In Process 2-3 , heat addition of 2.76 kJ is occurred. In the process 3-1, heat rejection is occurred. Calculate how much is heatrejected and the thermal efficiency of this cycle.

Question 2 An air standard cycle with variable specific heats is executed in a closed system with 3 gram of air and consists of three processes shown in the figure. Process 1-2 is constant volume heat addition from 95 kPa and 17 degree Celsius to 330kPa. Process 2-3 is isentropic expansion to95kPa. Process 3-1 is constant pressure with heat rejection is occurred. Calculate the properties of air at various state, how much is net work of the cycle in kJ and determine the thermal efficiency of this cycle.

Question 3 A carnot cycle is executed in a closed system, operating between a temperatre limits of 350K and 1200K. The pressure before and after the isothermal compression are 150 kPa and 300kPa. If the net work output is 0.5 kJ, calculate the maximum pressure in the cycle, calculate the heat transfer to the cycle, and calculate the mass of air in the cycle. Take account variable specific heats for air.

An ideal Otto cycle has a compression ratio 8. At the beginning of the compression process, air is at 95kPa and 27 Celsius. 750 kJ/kg of heat is transfer during process 2-3. Taking into account the variation of specific heats with temperature, calculate the following:1. 2. 3. 4. The The The The pressure and temperature at the end of the heats addition process. net work output efficient of the cycle mean effective pressure for the cycle

Question 5 An ideal Otto cycle with argon as the working fluid has a compression ratio of 8. The minimum and maximum temperatures in the cycle are 300K and 1340K. Accounting for the variation of specific heats with temperature determine the following:1. The amount of heat transferred to the argon of the cycle during the heat-addition process. 2. The efficiency of the cycle 3. The efficient if Carnot cycle is used.
