Introduction
FIRE IN NEW JERSEY 2010 is a statistical analysis of fire and emergency incidents in New Jersey. The data collected and used in the formulation of this report comes from the fire departments throughout New Jersey that participate in the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS). Fire service personnel enter incident data into their fire department computer-based NFIRS database and, on a monthly basis, submit their data to the Division of Fire Safety. The Division receives the fire department data, processes it into the State NFIRS database and forwards the data to the Federal NFIRS database.
NFIRS BACKGROUND
The Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974 (P.L. 93-948) authorized the National Fire Data Center in the United States Fire Administration (USFA) to gather and analyze information on the frequency, causes, spread, and extinguishment of fires; on the number, nature and causes of injuries and deaths resulting from fires and on property loss.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS:
This report marks ten years since New Jersey implemented NFIRS 5. The Division of Fire Safety would like to give special thanks to past and present staff who made the last seven Fire in New Jersey reports possible.

Report contents
The 2010 data presented in the report is representative of the incident data that was submitted to the Division of Fire Safetys NFIRS Unit by April 29, 2011. Data received has been processed into the State and Federal databases. Please refer to the Fire Department Participation Addendum to see if your fire department has contributed to the information in this report. Based upon incidents received, New Jersey fire departments responded 438,475 times to incidents in 2010. Data submission is broken down as follows: Of the 731 fire departments in the state, 688 (94%) submitted data. Note: 33 fire departments submitted less than six months of data. 43 fire departments did not submit any data. The number of fire departments in the state differs from 2009 due to the closing of Victory Gardens Fire Department FDID 14370 in Morris County; the additions of West Windsor Fire & EMS FDID 11045 in Mercer County and Holmdel Fire & Rescue FDID 13182 in Monmouth County (received FDID in 2007 but did not begin reporting until 2010); and the merging of several departments:
Burlington County: Browns Mills Fire Department FDID 03181 Country Lakes Volunteer Fire Company FDID 03183 Presidential Lakes Fire & Rescue FDID 03184 Magnolia Road Fire Company # 2 FDID 03185 Warren County: Franklin Township Fire Company FDID 21051 Asbury Fire Company # 1 FDID 21058 Pemberton Township Fire Department FDID 03180
Please note: Due to a lack of NFIRS data submission to the state, Camden County Division of Fire
FDID 04281 was inadvertently omitted from Fire in New Jersey 2009 and documented as closed.
Data in this report does not include military installation fire department data. Military installation fire departments submit their NFIRS data directly to the Department of Defense.
All of the charts included in this report are based on 2010 totals unless otherwise specified.
