Summary.
The purpose of this guide is to describe how the Pooley Sword web site was constructed from a technical point of view, and to assist in changing the site.

Domain Names
The domain name for the site is www.pooleysword.com . This domain is managed by a web ISP called 1and1. Their web site is http://www.1and1.co.uk/ . To manage the domain, log in to the customer logon at this site as www.pooleys.net .The password is SebP00ley

The domain www.pooleysword.com is hosted in a folder called pswords and this domain is managed from the domain management facility provided by 1and1. Page 4 of 27 James Carrie

The domain www.sebastianpooley.com is directed to a test web site, which is hosted in the folder called psword6.

Making a backup

Before making any changes to the site it is, of course, prudent to take a backup, and one way to do this would be to access the site via FTP and copy all the files to a local PC. It might also be as well to burn a copy onto a CD or DVD I used Core FTP lite which was available free of charge from the internet see www.coreftp.com An alternative would be to set up Dreamweaver see below and GET the entire site. A backup of the site on CD is also available with the paper copy of this manual in the Pooley Sword Office.

Dreamweaver
The Pooley Sword web site was created using Dreamweaver CS3. This can be downloaded from www.adobe.com

The download is about 280Mb and the program unzipped and installed easily. There is a free trail period of 30 days, after which the user is required to purchase a license (Cost in February 2008 was 405) I installed Dreamweaver on the PC opposite Janes desk in the Pooley Sword Office. I didnt need to purchase a license because the development was completed in less than the 30-day trial period. The fact that Pooley sword have used Dreameaver is known to Adobe as the trail version is registered using Janes email jane@pooleysword.com on the Adobe website. A competent technician should allow a week to learn Dreamweaver and I bought a book on the subject called Dreamweaver CS3 in Easy Steps by Nick Vandome. I recommend this title. There is also a lot of learning material about Dreamweaver on the Internet. Dreamweaver is easy to use except when it is first launched on the users desktop. It can take several seconds for the program to connect to the Internet and verify that the license is correct (or that there is still time left on the free trial). The user just has to be patient and Dreamweaver will eventually start. Performance after this is good. Dreamweaver will not install on a PC with less than 512Mb active memory.

The following banner is used at the top of most pages on the site. It was created by Daljeet Gill in Cranfield. I believe she used PhotoShop.

MS Paint
With the exception of the banner that was created in Photoshop all the other images on the site were created in Microsoft Paint. The small icons are percentage reduction of the larger images. Many of the images on the site are the same as those used in the catalogue. They are mostly stored as JPEG files though there are a few GIF format files.

Test Sites
During the development of the Pooley Sword web site several trail versions were created. All of this can be deleted. NVU was a free tool downloaded from the Internet which purported to offer all the facilities of Dreamweaver but was available free of charge as open source software. Unfortunately, it was very difficult to use and would have taken too long. Dreamweaver, became a very worthwhile investment.

Production sites
The production web site is www.pooleysword.com and it is stored in a folder called pswords. The following domain names all point to the pswords folder, so they serve the same data:-

To define a site chose the sites option. Further documentation is available with Dreamweaver The details of the production site are as follows. I did not enable check in or check out of any files as I was the only person working on the site.

The Local Folders

The site consist of the following local folders and files which I PUT (copied) onto the live site.

Folder Documentation

Use The documentation is not directly available to users of the site. This folder is a convenient place to store a copy of it. Open the local copy of these documents in MS Word on a PC when working on the site.

Images

Dreamweaver recommend that images are stored in a separate folder on the site, and as there are lots of images on the site (in various resolutions and sizes) the images folder has been further broken down into subfolders One html page per miniature is stored in this folder. Scripts are fonts. It was decided not to use Berthold Script Regular on the web site as there is no predictable way of sending the font to the end users browser. The fonts in use on the site are the default Ariel, Helvetica, SansSerif. The script files are not required on the site but are preferred in written documents by Pooley Sword. This folder could be deleted from the site with no effect on the web site.

Miniature Details Scripts

SpryAssets

Spry Assets are the code that makes various parts of a website work. The navigation bar is black and white and the colours reverse on MouseOver. It is spry assets that cause the Navigation Bar and MouseOver functions to work. They are code written by Dreamweaver and just included in the site. This folder contains the Cascading Style Sheet .css files. For a description of these see the Dreamweaver documentation. Each page of a web site will have sections that are common to all the others. The easy way to write consistent web pages is to write a template and then base all the pages on the templates. It is possible to base templates on templates and the web pages inherit the properties of each of them. The web pages also inherit properties from the .css files. To make the site readily changeable the properties are defined as high up the hierarchies as possible. Changing the templates and .css files is not for the inexperienced or faint hearted user.

There are 35 pages of sword details and other pages on the site. When the site is next revised, it might be a good idea to put the sword details into a folder to separate them from the other pages. This was not done owing to the testing effort that would be necessary to recheck all the pages.

This web-site manual is available in the documentation folder on the site.

Images
The images folder contains the following sub-folders Folder 110by110 Use This folder contains all the small images on the site. They are all close to the size 110 by 110 pixels. These images are used in the Swords, Miniatures, Scabbards pages. They are also used as small images of hilts on the sword detail pages. Often the image is used a link to the same image only larger. There are a few very large images on the site and to draw attention to them they are stored separately in this folder. This folder contains the photos of the miniature swords. Miniatures relates to product not to the size of the image. There is a 110by110 subfolder inside this folder for the small images and the larger images that link to them are in the parent folder. At one point we were going to put the titles of the sword pages on the web site as graphics because then they could be guaranteed to be in Berthold Script Regular. The images were going to be stored separately. This idea was abandoned in favour of sending the titles as text. This folder is not used and may be deleted. These folders, and their contents are created automatically by Dreamweaver. It should not be necessary to change these folders.

The templates are a hierarchy. If data is changed in a file at the top of the hierarchy, then all the files below that file will be changed. It is not possible to change the areas of the lower level files that are inherited from the areas of the templates on which they are based. Templates have the file type .dwt to distinguish them from .html pages. The hierarchy is as follows: Templates are in blue. Pages based on templates are in black. Pages not based on any template are in red.

Add a sword
To add a sword onto the site you will need: A description of the sword Optionally some history about the sword A list of the regiments that use the sword A photograph of the sword (approximately 500 x 1500 would be a reasonable size) A photograph of the hilt (approximately 600 x 800).

Proceed as follows: 1. Copy the photographs into the directory root/images 2. Open the photographs for EDIT using MS Paint 3. Using the image menu scale and rotate the images to create icons 110 by 110 pixels Page 23 of 27 James Carrie

4. Save the new images in the directory root/images/110by110 5. On the Dreamweaver file menu create a new page from the template SwordDetail.dwt 6. Add the small images and text to the new .html page 7. Create links from the small images to the larger images 8. Save the page using a suitable name 9. Open the page swords.html for editing 10. Add the icon image for the new sword onto the swords.html page 11. Add a title for the new sword on the swords.html page 12. PUT the swords page, the new sword detail page and the images to the web server to test

Add a miniature
To add a miniature onto the site you will need: A description of the miniature Optionally some history about the miniature A list of the regiments that use the sword that is represented in the miniature A photograph of the miniature (approximately 500 x 1500 would be a reasonable size)

Update the price list

There is a shared copy of the internet price list on the shared drive Z:\Internet Price List 2008.xls The Z-drive is linked to \\Pooleysword\SharedDocs. Before you cut and paste the relevant columns out of this .xls file add a column on the left. Cut and paste the data Page 24 of 27 James Carrie

from .xls into the prices.html file in Dreamweaver and include the column you added to the .xls If this is not included the price list is left aligned to the edge of the page and it is difficult to read. When you close the .xls file remember to not save the changes. The simplest way to make a small update the price list would be to open the prices.html page in Dreamweaver and edit the price list in design mode. It is then necessary to keep the file on the shared drive in line manually. To edit the prices.html file in Dreamweaver: Click Start > All Programs > Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 May need to wait several seconds for Dreamweaver to start Look in the lower right portion of the screen for the prices.html file in the files window. NB That the right hand column can be collapsed. Use the small arrow on the extreme right of the screen to enlarge it. If there is still no files window press F8 to display it.

Edit the price list by clicking to place the insertion pointer and correct the price

To add a row into the table, right mouse click at the point in the price list where the new row is to be inserted. Select Table > Insert Row. (As an alternative position the cursor with a left mouse click and then press Ctrl+M Page 26 of 27 James Carrie

To Delete a row from the table, right mouse click at the point in the price list where the row is to be deleted. Select Table > Delete Row. (As an alternative position the cursor with a left mouse click and then press Ctrl+Shift+M When a file is opened for editing, the name of the page is displayed in the top left portion of the screen. After the file has been changed a * mark is added after the file name until the file is saved. To save the edits press Ctrl+S. The file is saved on the PC. To copy the file to the server press Ctrl+Shift+U. To discard the changes before saving them click on the X in the top right portion of the screen and dont confirm the edit.
