SHADAC Brief on 2010 ACS Estimates


SHADAC released "State-Level Health Insurance Coverage Estimates from the 2010 American Community Survey." This issue brief provides state-level estimates of health insurance coverage by age and income from the 2010 American Community Survey (ACS). The maps and tables included in this brief provide state-level estimates for the nonelderly population (age 0 to 64), children (age 0 to 18), and nonelderly adults (age 19 to 64). Estimates for the low-income population (people with family incomes at or below 200 percent of federal poverty guidelines) are also included.

Updated SHARE Report on Express Lane Eligibility in Louisiana

state's ELE efforts. The results of this survey indicate that the proportion of uninsured children who were Medicaid-eligible (i.e., eligible-but-uninsured) dropped from 5.3 percent to 2.9 percent from 2009 to 2011.

Blewett Presents on Estimating Characteristics of the Safety Net Population


SHADAC Director Lynn Blewett presented "Using Population Data to Understand the Impact of the ACA," to the Association for Community Affiliated Plans (ACAP), April 11, 2012, in Washington DC. This presentation addressed how to estimate the size and characteristics of the populations served by ACAP members upon implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

Conference Updates

AcademyHealths State Health Research and Policy (SHRP) Interest Group will host its annual meeting on Saturday, June 23 at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin in Orlando, FL.

The Population Association of America (PAA) will host its 2012 Annual Meeting May 3-5 in San Francisco, CA. SHADAC Senior Research Fellow Lacey Hartman will present "State Variation in High-Burden Medical Out-of-Pocket Spending: Results from the Current Population Survey" on May 4th during the session on Health Insurance, Health Care, and Health.

News from the States


California report on Medi-Cal Caregivers
The UCLA Center for Health Policy Research released "Hidden in Plain Sight: California's Paid Medi-Cal Caregivers Are Vulnerable." This fact sheet shows that

57% of paid Medi-Cal caregivers have incomes that leave them in poverty or near poverty. Medi-Cal is the state's public health insurance program for low-income seniors or adults with long-term illness or disabilities.

Colorado Childrens Health Insurance Status Update


The Colorado Health Institute (CHI) published its annual update of estimates of Colorado children eligible but not enrolled (EBNE) in Medicaid and the Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) program by county to help state and local policymakers understand enrollment patterns in their communities. The update includes a fact sheet with an overview of EBNE children in Colorado, and a data supplement provides estimates by county.

Iowa State Data Spotlight on Tax Form Eligibility


SHADAC released a new State Data Spotlight, "Iowa Tax Information to Enroll Eligible Kids." This spotlight describes how Iowa collected necessary information via tax forms to decide which Iowa children are uninsured yet meet the requirements to qualify for hawk-i (Iowas CHIP) or Medicaid and use this information for enrollment outreach.

Ohio - Greater Cincinnati Area Survey


The Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati released results from the 2010 Greater Cincinnati Community Health Status Survey (GCCHSS) on health issues relating to white Appalachians in Greater Cincinnati and an oversample of Butler County, Ohio, adults. The survey shows 21% of adults in the Greater Cincinnati were uninsured in 2010, up from 16% in 2005. A variety of health status and access reports are available online at this link.
