English Parliamentary Style Debate (Proponents) Homework enhances the quality of students life.

First speaker; A very good morning to the honourable adjudicator and members of the floor. Firstly, our case today is Homework enhances the quality of students life. I, the first speaker, will focus on how homework can make students life better. The second speaker, ____________________________________, will be speaking about the benefits of homework and how it enhances the students quality of life. And the third speaker, ___________________ will
reaffirm our motion today.

Homework enhances the quality of students life. By definition, homework constitutes the out-ofclass activities that the teachers assign to students. These activities are an extension to schoolwork. Quality is defined as the standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind; the degree of excellence of something. According to the Avon Maitland District School Board, homework develops life-long skills such as self discipline, task commitment, time management, responsibility, independence, initiative and problem solving. Therefore I would like to refer The quality of students life here as the development of pupils as in the aspects of time management, initiative, responsibility, self discipline and task commitment. Now for my first point. Does homework enhance the quality of students life? The answer is yes. We firmly believe that homework enhances the quality of students life because homework builds up an initiative in students. They initiate study. Teachers get the schoolwork done from students whereas students initiate doing homework. There is a sense of responsibility associated with completing their homework. Children feel responsible for finishing homework and accomplished when they do it. Doing homework every day at the same time helps develop responsibility and prepares children for responsibilities they will face as adults. Therefore, we hold to the firm stand that homework enhances the quality of students life.

Second speaker; From what the first opponent has mentioned, the points show that their stand is very fragile. I, representing the Government, totally disagree with their arguments. This is due to the fact that homework enhances academic achievement. Students score better on class tests. Homework helps in the development of an attitude to explore and learn. It thus improves their academic results. Research has shown that homework that has been assigned regularly by the teacher conscientiously undertaken by the students contributes to improve student achievement. In a study conducted by Hill, Spencer, Alston and Fitzgerald (1986), homework was positively linked to student achievement. They indicate that homework is an inexpensive method of improving student academic preparation without increasing staff or modifying curriculum. Moreover, homework definitely gives students the practice of whatever they learn in school and practice makes them perfect! The second argument is by doing the homework, children learn to cope up with their school activities. They get an opportunity to apply their skills and enhance them. Homework gives students a chance to amend their mistakes and improve on their weaknesses. Home assignments provide children with a platform to express and exhibit their skills. It prepares students for the next step; whether it's high school for elementary students or university for high school students where a large amount of work is given and must be done independently as homework. As you can see, it's important to develop homework skills and strategies early on in elementary school, even if it's reading silently for 20 minutes each night. Thus, we firmly believe that homework can make students life better.

Third speaker; The second opponent mentioned that ____________________________________________________ and I totally disagree with his/her point. It may not, at first, seem relevant based on what you just said, but as time passes you will see how it benefits students quality of life. Homework totally enhances the quality of students life as it improves their time managing skills. Homework helps students develop their time management. How? They start allotting their time to study and play thus learning to complete their scheduled tasks in the time they have. Moreover, they learn to do things on their own. They manage their time and complete their work independently. Here we can see that homework encourages self-discipline in students. My second point is homework helps the children learn with interest. It builds a confidence in their minds. Teachers give comments on the work they do. Teachers positive remarks boost the children to learn. Students learn to follow instructions and complete their assignments successfully. They have to explore on topics, refer research material, and read about related topics in order to do their home assignments. Taking pride in homework assignments helps children experience the satisfaction of a job well done. Plus, the children go to school prepared for the next day and are more successful for doing so. In conclusion, homework helps children understand that learning doesn't stop when the school bell rings. Hence, we strongly believe that homework enhances the quality of students life.

Conclusion The motivation offered by homework should be accompanied by parent involvement. Some say that homework serves as a link between the school and home. Parents must strengthen this link by supporting their children in their home assignments. Parents must take interest in the homework given to their children. They must help their kids do their homework and be concerned about their kids school activities, thereby promoting education.

Possible POI What kind of homework are you talking about? How careful was the study and how many students were investigated? How able and interested/confidence are they? Is there any significant relationship between homework and students quality of life? During the early part of the 20th century, society banned homework. Too much homework was considered unhealthy; it deprived kids of outdoor play and sunshine. What do you think? So, should homework be abolished then?
