Classroom Management: I think the most important aspect of classroom management is consistency.

I think that students respond well to knowing how a teacher will respond; not exactly a predictable manner, but more of a clear understanding of how the teacher approaches students. What I also believe to be extremely important is a classroom based in mutual respect in which every persons input is valued and appreciated. Discipline: I think that discipline should be divided into two different categories, correction and consequences. With corrections the teacher is only trying to get a student to understand the need for their behavior to change and how it is negatively affecting a classroom. Also corrections are quick, to minimize classroom disruption and also to avoid alienating a student. Consequences stem from students going against what would be considered non-negotiable rules in place in the school, classroom, and also what a teacher will not accept from their students. I think corrections can be made in numerous tones with students, whether gentle reminders, or talking to a student privately. When it comes to consequences the teacher should maintain a firm tone while avoiding raising their voice, since when push comes to shove students will do what is necessary to save face. One final thing that weve examined this year is the idea of nonnegotiables which are the guidelines that a teacher will not back down from. My own non negotiable is that mocking, insulting, or making fun of a person for something they cant or wont change (race, sexuality, religion, ethnicity, language, etc.) My other rules were as follows: 1) Everyone has a right to be who they are in this classroom. This rule supports the expectation I have for inclusiveness and states this in a positive way. 2) No one will interfere with your right to learn. Although it sounds negative by starting with no it serves to show that people are allowed to learn free of interruptions. 3) Treat everyone with respect and value their contributions. I think students are often quiet in the class when they are afraid they will get laughed at for contributing to a classroom discussion. 4) You are responsible for your actions. This is more to display a rule about behavior that comes across as positive while fostering a positive sense of self awareness. 5) No one is permitted to hurt you. I wanted a rule that explicitly said there is no fighting, but in phrasing it this way also covers verbally, emotionally, mentally.
