0 The Subjects Background: The subject chosen for the purpose of recording is a female primary school pupil who currently studying in SJK (C) Chin Chiang. This text reading activity involves a Year Five student, Wong Jade. She comes from a Chinese family background and currently studying in Class 5A. The reason she is chosen for this reading activity is because of her proficiency in English as well as her fluency is rather good compared to her classmate. Jade Wongs first language is Chinese but she also communicates widely in English both at home and school. Before the reading activity started, she is given 10 minutes for preparation. During the preparation, teacher has provided minimal guides. After that, she reads out the text while recording will be taken. 2.0 The Reading Passage: The Obstacles in Our Path In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king

indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand, which is every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one's condition.

The lowest level of speech segmentation is the breakup and classification of the sound signal into a string of phones. The difficulty of this problem is compounded by the phenomenon of co-articulation of speech sounds, where one may be modified in various ways by the adjacent sounds. It may blend smoothly with them, fuse with them, split, or even disappear. Explanation of Possible Causes of the Pronunciation Problems: Pronunciation problems happen when speaking a second language

because most people are used to hearing and making sounds which only exist in their mother tongue. There are many sounds in Cantonese and English that are similar. Some however, are only partially similar and others are totally different. When you hear or are trying to say the partially similar or totally different sounds, it's easy to make mistakes because you are used to hearing and making sounds in your mother tongue. It is important therefore, to make yourself aware of how sounds in a different language are made and practise listening to them and saying them as much as possible. To make language sounds we move our jaw, tongue, lips, and the vocal cords in our throat in a number of different ways. If, for example, your brain is not used to telling your tongue to move into a certain position in your mouth in order to make a particular sound, then you may have difficulty saying that sound clearly. * Tolong modify ayat dalam chapter 4 ni. REFLECTION Syukur Alhamdulillah, at last we managed to finish this task in a given time. As a whole, this task is very challenging because our group members Mohamad Jamil bin Hj. Ladisma, Tow Teck Soon and Siti Hajar Binti Mohamad Don must carry an analysis and discuss about the pronunciation problem and features. In spite of that, we consider this as a good practice it gives us a lot of experience and benefits in order to master in this subject. This subject is not an easy one as is sound because there are many things needed to be understood and remembered such as the phonetic symbols, the place of articulation, manner or articulation and the appropriate place to stress in every word. In this task, there are three people and each of us has our own role and position in order to successfully complete it. Mr. Tow is assigned to collect the data of the subject as well as to record the subjects voice. Mr. Mohamad Jamil is assigned to transcribe of the passage and the last one and to identify all the errors that the subject had done in the recording and finally Pn. Siti Hajar is assigned to do the analysis and discussion of pronunciation features and problem. The benefits that we get from doing this task are it increases our knowledge and memory retention in memorising all the phonetic symbols. We also get to know more of the importance of stress and intonation in English. Without them, the speech will be not interesting and monotonous mood. Suprasegmental teach us the types of stress and intonation that exist in English language. Finally, we took this task as a valuable experience to master and learn the English Phonetics and Phonology.
